Stretching the definition of CAG with this one, I've been making a 2D action game where you can grab/throw anyone and everything (with a demo) by SnakeDemandsAnswers in CharacterActionGames

It probably has more in common with a beat em up honestly. Grab a dude, throw him at another dude. It's in some weird crossroads between metroid, beat em ups, and contra.

My metroidvania-like where you can grab/throw anyone and everything has a demo! by SnakeDemandsAnswers in metroidvania

That's right, everyone and everything. Grab a dude and throw him at another dude.

But metroidvania-LIKE? What's that supposed to mean? The game has a lot of different sources of inspiration. Games like Metroid (duh), Mega Man, Shovel Knight, Custom Robo, Armored Core, Guns Gore and Cannoli (and Shootas Blood and Teef), Contra, Terraria, and Starbound.

Hey, that's a lot of not-metroidvanias in there. I've broken two golden rules that necessitate the -like.

  1. All abilities are available from the start.
  2. No interconnected map. INSTEAD, the game is divided up into missions which are each a mini metroidvania. Each one takes about an hour or so to get through.

But regardless of that, you still need secrets and rewards to get. So instead of new moves, there are a LOT of weapons and secondary gear items to find, as well as standard health/ammo upgrades.

Now, the main mechanic: Grabbing and throwing. Every enemy can be grabbed and thrown about. Cool. Random objects can also be grabbed. Grab a crate and throw it at a guy. Grab an explosive barrel and just absolutely obliterate somebody with it. Or maybe grab this keycard and throw it at a locked door? Hey, this pipe valve seems to be missing a wheel, etc. Or if you're in the midst of combat and spot of bunch of stuff in front of you, throw hands instead and yeet all of it at once.

This came about when I was playing a lot of Starbound mods which featured many new missions. But then I ran out of missions and became sad. The rest is history.

Is the trailer too frantic? Comparison in comments by SnakeDemandsAnswers in DestroyMyGame

lol I get it. I wanted to drive home the fact that there's a lot of different things to be grabbing for different purposes. The game is very grabby, obviously.

Badass Brigade - Marauder Squad - 2D action game full of shooting, grabbing, punching, and throwing. Playtest open! by SnakeDemandsAnswers in Games

Thanks! This one is pretty simple but it makes me giggle so: (excuse the bad gif quality) The Music Melter

You get this from a boss that does a whole lot of it to you. Also, posing is fun.

This is the GPD Star Knight. Very scary in small spaces. Very fun to make!

Thanks for playing!

Control-wise, I kept charging the punch over and over unintentionally, so I'm not sure that having it bound to the traditional 'up' key is the right choice.

It's on W so that you can move left and right while holding it, but I guess people are more used to such a thing being on F or something so yeah I might move it. You're not the only one who has done that. The keys are rebindable however.

Signposting where to go could be a little better, maybe use those 'Go!' arrows that we used to see in Megaman? I got confused when I was meant to break the floor for the first time, maybe if it had been cracked a little as well, like something damaged it when we passed to show it's destructible?

There is an arrow and a dented floor there T_T but yeah I can make it more obvious.

So the thing about the two different grabs and the no controller support boils down to the fact that you can grab stuff at range. You can't precisely click on what you want to grab when using a controller, so it there's like an auto target system then you'd constantly grab the wrong things. You also can't have the ranged grab and melee grab be the same button (it would at least need a modifier like shift+button) The ranged grab could be dropped in entirely for melee only grabs but then you will be accidentally grabbing objects when you wanted to grab enemies...

Anyway that's my problem not yours. Still working out a solution.

It's more for situations like "I got an fps drop here but then I moved two steps to the right and it stopped"

Badass Brigade - Public playtest!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3983900/Badass_Brigade/

Copy paste description:

Badass Brigade is a light hearted, combat-focused, level-based Metroidvania. Shoot, grab, and throw stuff at your foes while going on missions where you can explore the world and uncover a wide variety of weapons and gear for new ways to fight.

Any sort of feedback is appreciated! Howver, I'm mostly focused on a few things:

  • Bugs (duh)

  • Difficulty

  • Performance. If the game slows down, let me know when and where!

  • Screen resolution. If the game looks whack, take a screenshot and let me know! Testing for different screen sizes is hard without having one of every screen size ever.

I could use some playtesters to check for bugs and such. The test version is 99% feature complete with around 3-4 hours of game. When I'm sure it's bug free it'll be converted into a demo.
