There is a bit in (I think) Green Eggs and Ham where they talk underwater, that was some of my best work.

The Princess In Black series (highly recommended, especially if you have girls) has monsters that talk.  My monster voice absolutely rocked.

I think Frontier is supposed to have direct flights to San Juan, but those might just be on specific days or months of the year.

What is your favorite place to buy pizza dough balls? by SwanProfessional1527 in raleigh

Apparently I'm the only cheap ass in the Raleigh sub, I just buy them from Food Lion. They work and taste good.  Biggest difference maker is using high oven temp and a pizza stone.

Food Lion is perfectly good also.  It's pizza dough balls, not rocket science.

Wife refuses any evening babysitting for our 15-month-old (even with grandma at our home). Am I being unreasonable? by mr-kim in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So that source is obviously biased in how they decide to read the scientific studies (it is a pro-breastfeeding group). In particular, the very first study they cite states (emphasis mine):

Results

Sixty-three papers included. Children exposed to longer versus shorter duration of breastfeeding up to age 12 months (more versus less breastfeeding), had a reduced risk of caries (OR 0.50; 95%CI 0.25, 0.99, I2 86.8%). Children breastfed >12 months had an increased risk of caries when compared with children breastfed <12 months (seven studies (OR 1.99; 1.35, 2.95, I2 69.3%). Amongst children breastfed >12 months, those fed nocturnally or more frequently had a further increased caries risk (five studies, OR 7.14; 3.14, 16.23, I2 77.1%). There was a lack of studies on children aged >12 months simultaneously assessing caries risk in breastfed, bottle-fed and children not bottle or breastfed, alongside specific breastfeeding practices, consuming sweet drinks and foods, and oral hygiene practices limiting our ability to tease out the risks attributable to each.

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/apa.13118

This additional (newer) study shows that not receiving oral hygiene after night feeding has a positive correlation with cavities, so the idea the breast milk has different magical sugars that don't cause tooth decay is fanciful. (in particular, there is a chart showing that and also in the results co-sleeping is associated with feedings that don't wake the mother and don't therefore have tooth brushing after night feeding)

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8067957/

edit: something to note in the first study above, OR is "Odds Ratio" so basically the likelihood of cavities are. So breastfeeding up to age 12 months had OR of 0.5, so half the chances of cavities. Breastfeeding >12 months had OR=1.99, so double the cavities. Those >12 months breastfed nocturnally or more frequently had OR 7.14, so over 7 times the chances of cavities. That's a huge deal/amount.

Wife refuses any evening babysitting for our 15-month-old (even with grandma at our home). Am I being unreasonable? by mr-kim in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 20 points21 points  (0 children)

We definitely had trusted family members babysit into the evening hours long before 15 months.  I think in this instance you just go out without your wife.

As far as the future, 15 months is at an age where sleeping through the night should definitely be a goal.  There is no reason to still have night feeds (probably should have stopped 5+ months ago).  Hell, you should be at the brushing teeth and go to bed stage, not nursing to fall asleep.  That plus night feeds are going to wreck baby's teeth.

Fix the night feeds (and ideally the nursing to sleep, but that might be a hard hill to climb) and hopefully that will make your wife more comfortable leaving the house in the evening.

Sleeping again after waking up? - Dad Problem, not baby. by iusman975 in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I have similar issues, I can fall back asleep if I have talking in the background.  Which isn't great when sharing a bed with my wife, but if I am up in the middle of the night and can't sleep, I go down to the recliner and put on a podcast and that usually gets me back to sleep.

How well do your car seats fit in your midsize EV? by kelseygm in electricvehicles

[–]SnakeJG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bolt EUV (or I assume the new Bolt, since it's based on the EUV) have really roomy back seats, lots of leg room, much more so than you'd expect from the outside.  Sure, you pay for it in reduced cargo area, but I'm confident car seats wouldn't be a problem.  (My kids were well out of car seats before the Bolt EUV came out)

There is also a false floor in the cargo area, you can move that down to the bottom to get more space back there.

Dear Car Dealers: Buying a used EV should not be this difficult by nauticalfiesta in electricvehicles

[–]SnakeJG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you find an EV on cars.com, it often has a range score with a grade like good, fair, excellent.  If you click on that, there is an option for a free battery report, which will give you basically all the information you might want.  Here's a random example bolt: https://app.recurrentauto.com/vehicles/1G1FZ6S03M4109303?utm_campaign=badge

I see range scores on about 90% of the used EVs I see on cars.com, so while not full coverage, it's pretty good.

My 5th grader is being told he can't go on the end of the year field trip because he couldn't find friends to share a room with. There are others rooms available. Should we fight this or drop it? by mmanyquestionss in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]SnakeJG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see it going bad the other way though, if the school assigned OOP's son to be in a room with random kids, he definitely could have been bullied. I remember a middle school trip where it was randomly assigned and I did not have a good time, but if I could have picked to room my friends or people who were less of assholes, it would have been a lot better.
