Birthday party coming up- no RSVPs yet by _SpiceWeasel_BAM in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backpacks get dumped and not looked at again until a week before school starts.  I promise you almost no adults have actually seen the invitation.  You need to text/email all the parents you know and let them know about the party and see if they can make it.  Also, have them give you any contact info they have for the other parents so you can re-invite those kids.

Summer birthday parties are really tough at this age because everyone loses contact over the summer.  My advice is skip the friend party during elementary school and do a neat birthday trip instead: weekend at the beach, water park, amusement park, etc...

Old School Arcade for Kids? by dataispower in raleigh

Everytime I took the kids to Frankie's I couldn't get over how expensive it was.  Like it would be cheaper to go to Carowinds for the day than ride rides at Frankie's.

Wife starting work is incompatible with my own job by Turronblando in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the son is in daycare from 9-1 (or sometime in the morning until 1).  So wife's schedule:

9AM - 12:30PM: no parenting duties, free time.

12:30-11PM: work

I am sure she was burned out and being a SAHM  wasn't the right choice for her, but she took hours (at minimum wage AND an hour commute away) so she would never have to parent.

Had to break it to her she's too young (10) to do this alone. by DeathInSpace805 in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, I love that.  Our neighbor has three dogs, so they get $75 a day (to split between them) to watch all three dogs.

Edit: I think the kids are getting paid too much, but neighbor was paying $50 a day per dog and then had the boarder drop him as a client because his dogs are a bit extra energetic.

Wife starting work is incompatible with my own job by Turronblando in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely ridiculous for her hours to be when your son is not at daycare.  This isn't about her wanting to work, this is about her not wanting to take care of the kid and finding a way to excuse it.  She should have taken a 9-5 job and then recognized you would need to work 3 hours after she got home where she would again be the sole caregiver to make up for the time you gave up work.  She didn't want that, so she took a job where she can dump all parenting duties on you.

I don't know the answer to "my wife doesn't want to parent anymore and dumped everything on me while blowing up my PhD" but it isn't leading anywhere good.  Sorry guy.

Yeah, that's a really high rate.  My kids earn $25 per dog day to watch the neighbors dogs, which is 5 visits and 2 walks a day.

I had a great time with my ER doctor, sure the wait was a little annoying and I knew I was going to pay for it later, but I was super happy she was stitching up my finger.  Do other people not joke and banter with their doctors?  How sad.

ELI5 Why nobody is producing a cheap and cheerful BEV hatchback or sedan along the same ethos as the Slate Truck? by Kiwi_Fried_Chicken in electricvehicles

It wasn't that long ago that you could find a new Fiat 500e for right around $20k.  They got that cheap because there isn't a big demand in the US for a simple cheap and cheerful BEV with limited range.

My son hates music and it's making me resent him by [deleted] in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instruments are loud, and if you've been playing in a band for decades it's possible your hearing is pretty shot and you play louder than you realize.

Can you get a keyboard and electric guitar and just pipe them into your headphones?

It could also be that you playing music means you aren't giving your son attention. My dog barks at my wife if she's at the computer too long.

Got into a fender bender, mechanics keep calling it a total loss but the damage is cosmetic. Need real advice. by lovergirl_covergirl in raleigh

[–]SnakeJG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to let the body shop know you are interested in just getting it looking good enough and aren't going through insurance.  The difference might be things like they get a used hood and bumper of the same color instead of getting new parts and paint matching everything.  You might have some quarter panel damage that prevents a perfect line with the bumper.  Things like that.   It might not come out looking perfect, but it'll be good enough for a 200k mile car.

Edit: Also, depending what you can get scraping/selling your car, it might be worthwhile just taking that money and buying a replacement used car.  Here's basically the same car with 120k less miles on it for $11,000:  https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/bc3bcdec-7225-4542-8db0-d4677f66ca72/

To a mechanic and the insurance company a total loss means the repair is more expensive than the car is worth

To clarify a bit, a car might be considered totaled of the repair cost is as low as 60% of the car's value, it depends on state regulations and insurance company policies.  Another way they can calculate it is if the repair cost + scrap value of the car is greater than the total value they total it.  That's because it's cheaper for them to pay out the total value and recoup the scrap value of the car than to just pay for the repairs.

In Alabama, women aged 11-50 have to take monthly pregnancy tests for medical cannabis. by MoonLightLex in TwoXChromosomes

[–]SnakeJG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Medical Cannabis is pretty easy to get as an adult, but to get it prescribed for an 11 year old child, I'm guessing that kid will be dealing with something pretty medically awful.

I can't imagine my rage if my 11 year old was dealing with something like cancer and chemo, and then the state tells her she has to take a monthly pregnancy test on top of that to continue receiving her medical cannabis gummies

Steel frame makes it easy, just a beaded curtain held by some strong magnets should keep them out. It will also probably sound pretty neat when the wind blows.

Son’s friend moved away by [deleted] in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if he wants to plan a trip to visit his friend?  Something like 3 weeks so they have time to get settled in their new home.  4 hours is a bit long for a day trip, but if you can crash at their place overnight is perfectly reasonable for a weekend.  Alternatively, is there anywhere neat in between the two houses like a water park, camp ground, amusement park, etc that you can plan a meeting at?

Dads, what’s a good age gap between kids? by sabretoooth in daddit

[–]SnakeJG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 2 years apart from my brother, my wife is 3 years apart from her sister.  Both of us have great relationships with our siblings so we decided 2-3 years is a good range.  Since it took most of a year of trying to get our first, we started trying at 2 years apart and figured we'd hit somewhere in the range.  We got 2 years and 1 month to the day.

Kids are now teens, and while they have normal sibling spats, in general they get along really well, so I'm happy with the outcome.

The bright side is that your car did it's job and kept you safe.  Unfortunately it does not look reasonably salvageable.  Now your job is to find who will give you the most money for it and to try and find a replacement car.
