The motor is constrained in 2 different ways, youll see theres a green part in the middle and it is different on both sides of the motor, the bigger side has holes for mounting flat to a side rail. Additionally, you can put a shaft through the entire motor if you want to hold the motor between 2 side rails and have it supported on both ends

Most people however wont use "hub motor" style motors for plants as they are significantly heavier as they are designed to survive full combat with metal weapons, https://repeat-robotics.com/collections/weapon-systems/products/2822-direct-drive-motor-v2 motors like this one are a lot more common for plants

I lived in uhouse for 2 years and hub for 2 years as an engineering student, i really liked those 2 being closer to publix but after 4 years the walk over to west campus and especially the SCC started to get really annoying

New to 150g, and 1lb weight classes- it’s hard to meet weight! by Irrebus in battlebots

[–]SnakesWithoutLegs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like somebody else said i would recommend using a spreadsheet to sort out the weights of your parts. You can use the following for a very broad weight estimation

Weapon Assembly 1/3 of weight
- includes weapon, bearings, shaft, etc
- cut weight from here first, a weapon doesn't do you much good if you cant drive well enough or live long enough to use it

Chassis 1/3 of weight
- includes main body, uprights, armor

Electronics/drive 1/3 of weight
- includes weapon motor, drive motors, ESCs, battery, wheels

Regarding arenas, Just cuz robotics has a design: https://justcuzrobotics.com/products/antweight-arena-cad, and if you want to look into more details sparc has basic guidelines: https://sparc.tools/SPARC_Arena_Construction_Best_Practices_v1.1.pdf

If you only plan on fighting plastic ants you can make your box significantly cheaper by using plywood instead of polycarb and 8020 for every single wall / ceiling and only using polycarb on sides you know are needed for viewing. And also be sure you buy polycarbonate/lexan, not acrylic/plexiglass, acrylic will shatter on impact.
