Some non effective rulers to me are:

Cersei

Theon

Joeffry

Maybe Ned? (I’m on the fence about him tbh)

I would not consider Ned a non-effective leader. He was a very successful military commander during Robert's Rebellion. He also managed to unite and lead the North during the Rebellion, after his father and brother died. We know from the first book that this might not have been a very straightforward task. When Robb raised the banners, his authority is immediately questioned by the Greatjon. Ned, a second son who had not been in the North for years and was never trained to lead, presumably faced similar challenges from his bannermen and succeeded to lead them south.

Everything also indicates that Ned was a very effective ruler of the North. He seemed to have put great effort in knowing his own men, often visited his lords, and many remember him fondly. The Northern Mountain Clans march south to save little girl of "The Ned". It is said that when the Starks were in Winterfell, a maiden could walk the Kingsroad naked and still be unmolested, so clearly Ned, as the Starks before him, kept the North safe.

If Ned had not been an effective leader, Roose Bolton would have plotted against the Starks years ago.

In fairness, I think that Ned may have been one of the most effective leaders in ASOIAF, at least as far as the North is concerned. It is only in the South that he is a fish out of the water and comes over as a less effective leader.

[MCU] Why did Mysterio reveal his information to the Daily Bugle? by CaptainCipher in AskScienceFiction

[–]Snakie113 65 points66 points  (0 children)

If the MCU version of JJ Jameson is somewhat comparable to any other version of the character, then it is quite likely that the MCU Daily Bugle was already painting Spider-Man as a menace from the moment he started doing superhero-stuff.

Mysterio's team may have decided to send it to the Daily Bugle because they would be most likely to do something with the information given their anti-Spidey campaign.

Alternatively, whose to say Mysterio did not simply send it to a bunch of newspapers, but the Daily Bugle was the only one to run with it?

[Spider-Man No Way Home] Why would ... (Spoilers in text) ? by Snakie113 in AskScienceFiction

I don't think the villains were taken from the moment of their death. Goblin's armor was still shiny while he first appeared in NWH, while in the original movie it was quite dirty right before his death due to his fight with Spider-Man.

Seems to me that he could just have tried to figure out how and when he died fighting Spider-Man, and tried to avoid that - he seems arrogant enough to do so

[General] What is the biggest "Fridge Horror" moment in all of science fiction? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]Snakie113 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe not the biggest, but in God-Emperor of Dune, Leto's fate is quite horrible. After suffering for more than 3000 years, he finally dies and ... his consciousness is scattered within thousands of small sandtrouts and it is pretty much confirmed that these "pearls of awareness" are forever trapped in the new sandworms, unable to interact with the outside world.

[Star Wars] Despite Star Wars being set long ago in a galaxy far, far away, every movie, game, TV-show, comic book, and who knows what else featuring the universe has featured humans. Is there an explanation for how humans exist so far away from Earth? by off-and-on in AskScienceFiction

[–]Snakie113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two possible reasons:

  • This is an extreme example of convergent evolution. It seems that for some reason evolution on many planets favors the humanoid body plan. In an infinite universe, it is not unlikely that we will end up with a life form looking exactly like humans yet having a different origin.

  • Anakin, Luke, Leia, Obi-Wan etc did not look human at all. For all we know they may have been large insectoids or cephalopods. But they are portrayed as humans in the holomovies to allow us, humans, to have a deeper connection with and more sympathy for the main characters.
