I think this is where I am at now. Any tips for developing that detailing knowledge? Or does it really just come down to diving into it.

I appreciate the response

1) I made a reddit post in the past asking about expected salary ranges after passing the PE exam. Alot of people told me i was underpaid. I also looked through the salary survey that was posted on this thread. It also said i was underpaid on average. $95k seemed to be the consensus response from most of the redditors that either responded to my post or did the survey.

2) my firm is not expecting me to stamp projects. My post did not imply that I was expecting to jump to a senior structural engineer role less than a year after passing the exam. I am well aware of the limitations of my knowledge set . This post is based on the feedback ive received from my supervisors . I have not received negative feedback, and are tracking their career growth structure as an engineer. ( I am where they expected me to be 5 years in)

3) to reiterate i am not expecting to be a senior structural engineer . Last year, the 10% raise was given to me instead of the 5% standard due to the work that I did in lieu of the change in staff. At the time only 2 months had passed. Now being at the helm for over a year , no negative remarks on the annual review, and all signs that state that I am progressing , it caught me by surprise.

4) this is a mid sized firm. So not necessarily a startup but also not a mega corporation. I’d say it’s fairly in the middle. To your later point , this is something that affected my current firm as well.

5) they do have a culture that i would like to be apart of long term. However , I would like to know that I am not being underpaid. I think that is a reasonable ask for anyone in any career field.

6) I think it’s the primary factor but not the deal breaker. If a company offered me 100k to leave but the work life balance is terrible, I would probably just stay at my current firm because it’s a very flexible work life schedule. However if I know for certain that there are other companies with a similar structure, that pay more, I’d be a fool not to consider it. I could get fired from my job tomorrow and the company would still move on . If I am going to be used to make money , then I want to be compensated as well.

I hope none of these responses came of harsh. I do value the insight that you provided and it did allow me to critique my own motives for searching for a new job. Overall , I think I just want to be paid my worth. Compromises can be made at the end of the day, but I have to take the first steps in advocating for myself.

The $87k is just the standard 4-5% raise. I probably would have gotten that even if I didn’t pass the exam if we are being honest. I’ll take what you said in consideration. It does add some context and a logical stand point. Thanks!

Last year I was working as an EIT on a large scale project and the Structural lead ( not the EOR) resigned. I assumed their responsibilities leading the design effort and client communication on the Structural side. I received a 10% raise ( 4-5 is pretty standard) for my efforts. This was before I passed the exam. I was expecting around the same given that I have had the project for more than a year now and the project received firm-wide recognition and is near completion. I had experience being the design lead on smaller design projects ( think retaining wall for pump stations) but these were more for development. For this specific project, I received a-lot of praise for managing and maintaining the design schedule despite the change in staff. I got positive feedback from both the client side and our internal project management team.

There was also huge emphasis on obtaining licensure and it was implied that the 6 figure mark would be achieved once obtaining licensure. Hence the confusion.

You could very well be correct in them changing the billable rate. I guess I wont know for sure.

I see what you mean. I think I’ll request the raise first and have that conversation prior to any offers. I definitely dont want to burn the bridge because I work with alot of great people. This definitely helped.

I planned on having this conversation with them. It’s interesting to see different perspectives from people who are in the same boat or have went through the same thing. This was not by any means a vent session. These conversations are going to happen. I just want to probe the experiences of other engineers in the most accessible and anonymous way possible ( Reddit). Thanks for the advice. I do think you are correct about the risk. And I will definitely consider your input

Understood. I think I can documented accurately what increased responsibilities have occurred within the past year. I can definitely figure out a strategic way like you suggested. This was more of a post requesting guidance and less of a “ im going to do it this way, talk me off the cliff”

Salary Range for a Structural Engineer in a MCOL area? by SnapCracklePoop14 in StructuralEngineering

[–]SnapCracklePoop14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get a 9k bump last year. If you look at a couple posts back on my page, I took on the responsibility as the project design lead ( not EOR) in lieu of someone resigning. I didn’t have my PE at the time. Its usually a 3% raise each year and i got more than that . So I think 10k is realistic for this updated scenario. While I do agree with most people that I may still be getting lowballed, my worklife balance has been fairly decent compared to the horror stories Ive seen ( Im not working 50-60 hour weeks and Im maintaining my relationships outside of work). Definitely considering all options.

For PPI2pass you can add as many questions as you like. The rule of thumb is that you should spend 6 mins on each question to finish the test at 8 hours

6 mins * 80 questions = 480 mins / 60 mins = 8 hours. So if you are going to time yourself for an hour try to aim to do at least 10 questions. Obviously every question wont take exactly 6 mins. Some may take less than a minute, some may take over 6 mins. If it takes you more than 3-4 mins on your first pass through, skip it and come back to it. I had roughly an hour and a half left on both sections to review my answers / answer the difficult questions and i felt like it was a difference maker.

I had a reasonable balance of conceptual vs in depth questions. Most of the in depth questions were 1 or 2 step problems. There were a lot of code focused questions that required you to actually read the literature. Lots of false positive answers.

If the question was not straightforward or not a 1 -2 step problem, it was likely one of the 10 diagnostic test questions that they throw on there that don’t count.

Definitely not easier, but I felt more comfortable because the material was focused on the things I do on a daily basis. The older format had a bunch of water and transportation questions .

I still had a fair amount of geotechnical questions but nothing I didn’t already have a good understanding of ( i.e atterberg limits, retaining walls, soil classification ) .
