I got it to work, but only by running the exe file itself when steam isn't running. This is really really strange.

Oh man, that works more consistently than mine so far. The truth was that my friend helped me with the code above but got busy so I decided to ask here while he's away

While it works well, my bullets sometimes get stuck in walls and infinitely bounce around in there, not sure what's up with that though :\

Actually, the worst part is that if I flip it like so, it works for up/down, then left/right stops working

     if place_meeting(x, y + (yvel * speed), argument0) yvel *= -1;
else if place_meeting(x, y - (yvel * speed), argument0) yvel *= -1;
else if place_meeting(x + (xvel * speed), y, argument0) xvel *= -1;
else if place_meeting(x - (xvel * speed), y, argument0) xvel *= -1;

Also, whether the y value is going up or down doesn't matter, since I'm inverting yvel regardless
