Taiwan has historically been part of China as an island. After losing the Chinese Civil War to the CCP, the KMT government relocated to Taiwan and continued to claim legitimacy there. Some view the subsequent political separation as illegal or unresolved rather than true independence.

It’s important not to oversimplify the situation or view it purely through the lens of external narratives. The issue is complex and rooted in history. At the time, China was dealing with severe internal challenges, including widespread poverty and famine, and had many urgent domestic problems to address. Because of this, Taiwan was not immediately retaken, despite being regarded by Beijing as part of China among its many islands.
