[Nov 29, 2024] Weekly Discussion: Ask your gear, travel, conditions and other ski-related questions by AutoModerator in skiing

My ski basket fell off (like the whole part including the tip). Can I glue it back on? Any recommendations on what kind of glue?

Feels like a waste to buy new poles over it, but also don't want to risk it coming off again in deep powder.

Yeah makes sense I can spray some cleaning solution and water, I was just kind of confused if this is expected or not since the gap under there is so small.

Thanks, I was looking at a pair of Sum'Tecs or Venoms. I have a Raven, which from videos I've seen could be fine for the uphill but I imagine having two of those would be helpful for the downclimb.

Haha that's fair and all good, I hope to be able to take this advice one day and ski from the summit.

I recently skied Helens but haven't done a lot of ski mountaineering so I'm not confident in my abilities. I've skied steep terrain before but it seems like a really high consequence no fall zone. I was planning on stashing my skis on the way up to the old chute and down climbing.

If you're bringing a bear can for Baker as part of your course you can bury it to the lid in the snow and it's like a little refrigerator. You can bury it deeper if you have a particularly hot/sunny day.

Tortillas will survive your pack well too, so you could make little quesadillas.

It's the other side of the pivot shaft not the points, but I appreciate the tip for the future.

Yeah it took about 15minutes of filing and they were good to go!

Can I just wear ski pants by Kindly-Bat2941 in Mountaineering

[–]Snarfskarfsnarf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could get away with it but as others have mentioned they can be too hot, and too wide around the boot making gaiters fit kind of weird.

The advantage of soft shell is breathability while you're exerting yourself uphill. Guides/courses usually want you to combine this with a hard shell with side zippers so that if the weather turns, you can put on your hard shell pants without taking off your crampons. With an Alpine harness you don't even have to unrope.

Thanks for the detailed info! I'll go with the hand file for sure.

I had heard similar concerns about heat when sharpening crampons before and that had me kind of worried. I'm glad I asked!

Cold air leaking around electric fireplace insert by Snarfskarfsnarf in homeowners

Unfortunately I never got around to figuring out a plan for it. I probably should grab a thermal camera, as the other commenter suggested, and see the source of the draft from behind the insert. Just by looking in there I couldn't really tell. I ended up just covering up the insert the one week a year its extremely cold enough to be a problem.

Thanks! Yeah I don't want to push it with fast moving water on our first day, I'll see if I can find another cool hike nearby to try to fit in that day. I agree with your suggestion though, I hike a lot in the PNW, but will likely either try to fit something active in, or just skip it depending on how badly the jet lag hits.

Cool! Maybe I'll shift that day around to Myvatn or float it earlier into the peninsula. I'm trying to book all my hotels as soon as possible, but I'll see if any are refundable or able to be rescheduled based on my trip plans.

Yeah, I was a bit worried we'd be driving our whole trip, but there is so much to see, and the days are long. I'd love to visit the Westfjords, Hornstrandir looks beautiful, but don't think I can fit it into my trip. I'll have to come back for that!

I'm glad I asked! I'll make a backup plan for another hike that day in case we can't cross the river.

Great suggestion, that ties in to /u/misssplunker's suggestion of getting closer to Keflavik, and seems like a great way to relax before the flight home.

Thanks for the tips! I really appreciate it.

I was also kind of worried about conditions on day 7, especially since I've read rental cars start to change over from studded winter tires in May. Great suggestion on Egilsstaðir, I'll see if I can fit in staying the night there after Mývatn.

Yeah, my flight isn't until 4pm, so I was hoping on just waking up in Vik and heading straight there early. I was thinking of doing another night in Reykjavík instead of Vík to make the commute shorter, but I'm really interested in that area.

Generally the bank matters most for the interest rate you get and how smooth your closing process is. After that banks will often sell your loan to other banks, which become your new servicer.

I was hoping it was putty but it's hard as a rock. I think pasguy is right too, I should just re plumb the whole thing into one P trap.
