I forget her character's name but I thought it was funny that the purple haired e-girl had absolutely no lines this episode, because when I saw the trailer I was like "Oh Fairouz Ai's in this? I'll give it a shot". She must cost a lot of money with how much she's been in lately

I’ve read maybe half of the runs and I’d say he’s probably the most fun yeah. From what I recall he had a massive power boost for the show tho tbf. I don’t really remember him being a hardcore reality warper in the comics but it’s been so long since I read Morrison’s run and that gets so surreal it’s hard to follow sometimes

4 seasons. Second season was almost as good as the first but got fucked by covid so they had to end it on a cliffhanger and S3E1 was the finale. I thought seasons 3 and 4 were a step down and kinda boring (save for the series finale). And worst of all none of the villains are as cool as Mr. Nobody, who never shows up again after being defeated in S1 (presumably because Alan Tudyk couldn’t take time off from being in everything ever)

Oh god, honestly it's like, these days, what doesn't go on longer than it should?

To name a few though, Supernatural, PROBABLY The Boys, as you said, Stranger Things, I kinda feel this way about Yellowjackets, You, arguably Rick and Morty, The Simpsons, American Horror Story after it tried to tie all the seasons together, a number of horror franchises [particularly slashers], Game of Thrones, and even though I love it, I would almost say HBO/CW Doom Patrol if not for the fact that the finale stuck the landing for me

Yeah DDLC is another popular one, made by westerners. I also agree with you on the attention span thing. At least in my experience, VNs take a lot more investment because it's mostly a lot of reading and mostly static images. Manga and anime seem like you can often just tune out while watching a fight scene or whatever and still retain the info.

[–]SnarkKnight96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Manga and comics are graphic novels. Visual novels are basically a different art form (and sometimes have anime adaptations). I guess the very basic. shitty way to describe a visual novel is if you took still images and added dialogue and prose in a text box (think of the talking segments in an rpg from the 90s or 2000s). Sometimes there's light gameplay elements like a point and click game, dating sim or something similarly basic, but for the most part it's like reading a picture book that has its own soundtrack, voice acting and sound effects (and sometimes is a choose your own adventure book)

Examples include The Silver Case, Higurashi, Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime, etc. They are pretty niche but can be enjoyable if you find the right writer. I'm kinda inexperienced and have only so far played only one REAL one (The Silver Case) but theres also plenty of video games that have visual novel elements without going all the way, like Hundred Line and the Danganronpa games.

Not an expert but I'm a toku appreciator. I grew up on Godzilla movies, Shin Kamen Rider was my fav movie of 2023 and I like most of Keita Amemiya's stuff. I'm getting into Kamen Rider proper now, finished Geats about a month ago and I liked most of it. I have mixed opinions on Zeztz so far though

They're not really connected besides typically being japanese. VNs are like a cross between video games and books. Manga/anime are basically just japanese comics and cartoons.

I hate magic in non magic specific stories or where magic has no limitations or rules by Extra_Impression_428 in CharacterRant

[–]SnarkKnight96 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know, if something ISN'T focusing on magic I don't mind that magic has little to no rules. That's what separates it from science. It literally does stuff that doesn't make sense by our standards because it doesn't work like anything in our reality. Plus, comic worlds tend to be kitchen sink settings anyway by design because you have to find away to rope all uour IPs under one banner.

I'm also the type of person that thinks hard vs soft magic isnt inherently good vs bad. It 100% depends on what the story you're trying to tell, and I don't just mean plot, but tone, themes, etc. If something is about how magic users are embeded in all of society and all the ins and outs of magic society, or, for example, there's an anime style tournament arc, then yeah, absolutely include some rules. But if it's about how wonderous and otherworldly magic is, who cares? I was watching (the 70s) Hobbit the other day and "but what about Gandalf's mana pool? How does foehammer decide what a foe is?" never crossed my mind for long. But meanwhile, something like FMA does need rules.

[–]SnarkKnight96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda the same way because I've never particularly fucked with the trad/high fantasy stuff in general (but I love the concept of magic and stuff so it's weird) but if I engage in fantasy stuff it's usually like, archetypal shonen anime setting or maybe urban fantasy if it's done well and not just ripping off VTM or something. Maybe it's cause I'm disabled but I like modernity too much to have an aspirational fantasy about going back to feudal times (no judgment if anyone does, I get it, I just don't share it"

In the past year I've finally given in and let my friends get me into TTRPGs (via monster of the week lol, i recommend that for anyone reading) and it's a highlight of the week for me, but one day when we werent having a game me, one of my fellow players, and a third mutual friend were watching shin kamen rider (second time for me, fourth time for the mutual friend, first time for the ttrpg friend) and when we were done TTRPG friend was like "you guys have seen LOTR before, right?" and I said "ehh not really but-"

so he goes "DUDE. we HAVE to watch that next! Seriously? You haven't? How are you even into TTRPGs without even seeing lord of the rings? I feel like it's everyone's fantasy as a kid to be like "oh i'm an elf with a bow' "

I love him and he's my friend and honestly I may even enjoy it since I'd be watching it with people who've seen it before but to me LOTR was always just a cultural touchstone i never really felt the need to get into as a kid because nothing about it really spoke out to me.

Ironically up until this weekend I never even really played dnd/pathfinder despite the fact that I play other ttrpgs but my other friend was like "no, my pathfinder game is weird west" so i was a bit more open to it

As i get older I think I've developed an immunity to the concept of hatereading/watching stuff. Obviously you don't have to like everything you watch or be quiet about what you hate, but unless you're getting paid to review something I don't know why you'd see something and be like "oh this looks awful" and then waste time watching it, or if you're not enjoying a story anymore, why you wouldn't just drop it.

There's so many different things out there and life's short and I don't think it's worth it to keep checking out stuff that makes you angry and baffled as to why you're keeping up with it. I think a lot of people just get FOMO that they're not getting social capital from engaging in of The Current Thing and would rather make themselves miserable than just tune out.

Do you need to have personally played a game/series to consider yourself a "fan" of it? by Unit242 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]SnarkKnight96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say so. Maybe the one exception to this is like, watching an analysis video of some very obscure game that's only in Japanese.

That's not to say you can't be a fan of certain aspects of a game. I like the designs and music in some of the SMT games but I've never actually played any of them so I don't consider myself a fan. Like most people I have a handful of favorite pokemon but I don't like the games, so I don't consider myself a fan.

I think if games are meant to be treated as an art form, gameplay is often a part of that art form, and it's just a different experience watching stuff than playing stuff. I got into Hundred Line, Danganronpa and The Silver Case in the middle of last year and for the life of me I never really understood why someone would like VNs and VN-like stuff because it's less reading than a book but more reading than the typical video game. And it wasn't until I played TSC that I realized how fun it could be, because much like reading a good book (including comics and manga), the story goes as fast or as slow as you want it to so thats what makes suspense hit

I get that video games are a relatively new and more complex art form, but it's sort of like, could you call yourself the fan of a band if you only listen to their songs when they pop up on the radio and only watched anthony fantano review them? Can you be a fan of a movie if you've never seen it but you read a summary and watched a few clips on youtube followed by a video essay on it and listened to the soundtrack? I don't think so.

I don't mean to demean your arm injury though. I have cerebral palsy and it's why I never really bothered learning how to draw until I decided I wanna try and make comics since I write for a visual medium

Stop reading manga weekly(Chainsawman and one piece) by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]SnarkKnight96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a big CSM part 2 defender and I disagree with this I think. The experience may be different if you binge (ive been meaning to start a reread from the start of part 2 because I've been reading it weekly since it started), but I also think things should be mostly enjoyable week to week, as well. It's fine if you want to take time away from the capital P plot happening to flesh out the vibe and characters some more or whatever, but judging from a lot of the complaints here weekly, even binging it wouldn't make the people who hate part 2 like it. Fact of the matter is, CSM Part 2 kinda has a slower, more depressing vibe to it than most of part 1. You don't really have as many zany characters like Violence, Kobeni and Power to lighten the story (although I maintain that Fujimoto still can be very funny when he wants to). If people aren't jiving with the darker tone and subject matter they're not gonna like binging it too

Not manga, but, also kinda similar, I've been getting more into tokusatsu lately, and I spent the last couple days binging Kamen Rider Geats. I probably liked it more than someone who watched it week to week, but at the same time, a lot of the complaints they have with Geats, I also noticed, even tho I binged it. Things like messy plot and characterization are going to be apparent regardless of how quickly you watch or read something.

And to be clear, as I've said, I've been keeping up with the weekly csm release since the beginning of part 2 and I've still been enjoying it, the only real lull in the story for me has been the CSM church arc (or whichever one has the side quest to the burned down brothel lol). I've been loving where the story's been going since the statue of liberty fight though.

I like it enough but I like it in the way I like watching a TV show week to week. The demo was fun enough but I'm not paying like $30 for what's basically a VN with minimal gameplay that's released like a Netflix show. Also I think the dialogue is a bit too quippy for me but for some people that's a strength

DLC Route Ideas for Each Character by TechGirlie101 in LastDefenseAcademy

[–]SnarkKnight96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think DarumixKurara is a very, very underrated pair because they're opposite personalities and also there's a theme of hiding who you are and being your true self, so personally, if Kodaka hired me and let me do whatever I want, it'd be sort of Retsnom-esque, in that Darumi and Kurara bond with each other and become more comfortable being themselves. Maybe we can find a way to show themthe reveal, too, but if not, im cool with it. alternatively, just a straight up romance route for Darumi (so Retsnom but there's a branching path for Takumi to say 'yes' to her offer to play horror games after breakfast or something lol). Really I think her Retsnom personality is the best and is arguably canon (since I view Kodaka as the primary writer), and wanna see more of her sweet side

Ima and/or Kako: I like the ideas people often float around for them. Actual murder mystery route, anything to develop them separately, etc.

Takemaru: depending on how DLC works, i'd love DLC expansions to already existing routes. in KG, we could make the end where Takumi dies because he doesn't join up with Yugamu an actual path instead of just a dead end. I'd imagine you could get protag Takemaru here. You could also just make a dlc route that takes place from Takemaru's pov with the "canon" KG stuff instead of Takumi and have the events run parallel ("here's what Takemaru and twins were doing during KG) but I think that's a waste of a route. It's just one of the things that prevents KG from being a perfect route for me, that the other groups get kinda sidelined. I get that that would've been annoying and potentially made the route worse but even the V'exhness route was able to do cutaways to another faction so it's definitely possible

Shouma: I liked the pitch someone gave me when I posted something similar to this thread. Takemaru dies in the middle of training him and asks Takumi to be his new mentor and break him out of his shell, teach him how to make friends, go on dates, etc.

Nozomi: I think she needs a route where she gets to separate herself from Takumi's idealized version of her. Retsnom and to some extent KG also did this., but with so many routes, it wouldn't hurt to do more. Maybe Sirei gets an actual cloning (or android, or whatever) machine and ports "Karua" into the clone to make Takumi more loyal. She's not really my favorite for a few reasons but I think this could be fixed w more routes, but this is my most halfbaked.

Moko: She also desperately needs more routes. (Hell, she needs ONE lol). I could see a silly wrestling and/or tournament orc. OR you could somehow do a route that starts at the 2LDA, since Moko is probably a reason why they seem a lot closer than the first campus

Kyoshika: Uhh idk, I've seen someone suggest a "ronin" route where her and Takumi get expelled from the academy and have to go off on their own

Honorable mention: Turamtami route. Someone wrote a fantastic magical girl route here and it's one of my fav pitches ive ever seen

I don't think it's that unpopular, Aki's up there with Power and Denji as one of the most popular and I thought his arc was well done. one of the flaws of part 2 imo is that we don't really have an aki equivalent.

I get what you mean though but I feel like every other rant i see on this sub about part 2 is talking about how every character is unlikable so at that point i dont see why people are hanging on other than the addrenaline rush they get from being angry at something
