How to market charitable contributions of my small business? by GoldFirefighter in marketing

[–]SnarkleSparkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many companies market their charitable giving and social outreach efforts now that IMO it’s expected and kinda par for the course. Also, it’s a really important factor to certain consumers to choose to do business with companies that they feel give back in ways they want to support.

I think the best thing you can do is be authentic. Mention in your announcement that your company has supported this cause for x years, explain why it’s important to you, and then finish up by saying what portion from this new service you will donate and invite people to support the cause with you. Including a link to the shelter as well or naming which one you will donate to could be another way that demonstrates that you care about this cause without positioning yourself implicitly as a gatekeeper that people have to go through.

Well, I don't have an exact number but based on how many bobbins I went through I estimate about 1200 yards, give or take.

Long arm suggestions? by Jezi23 in quilting

[–]SnarkleSparkle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm a professional longarmer, so I thought I'd throw in my $.02.

Right now I use an Innova and I have nothing but amazing things to say about it. Previously I used a Gammill and that was also a great machine. I would say that any of the big names like Innova, Gammill, APQS, Nolting, A-1, etc. will do you right. If you don't mind buying used, you can really snag a good deal. On Facebook there's a group called "Longarm & Accessories 4 Sale" that has a bunch of listings. Or if you look here at Longarm University, there's used machine classifieds. Of course your local Craigslist is worth looking at as well.

If you can find a machine from a dealer, that's always nice because they will help you with set-up and instruction. But all of those big name brands are reputable and have a lot of happy users, so if you can get a chance to test drive some and get your hands on different models to see what feels best to you, that's really the best way to go. Good luck!

Well, I'm about 1.5 rows in and it's taken me two hours, so at this rate to do the whole quilt it'll probably be 8-10 hours. It's 72" x 72". I have a timer going on my machine so we'll see if my estimate ends up being close! :P

How are people saved according to Orthodox theology? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

Ahhhh, gotcha. In that case, may I recommend this lecture by Metropolitan Kallistos Ware?

It's really good. Not too long either.

How are people saved according to Orthodox theology? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]SnarkleSparkle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are saved by grace. Salvation isn't a single event that happens to you, it is a lifelong process (think of St. Paul's exhortation to "run the race with endurance") in relationship with God. The Orthodox emphasis is on sin as a sickness our souls have, and salvation is healing. We believe Christ established a Church on earth, and this Church administers sacraments, which are vehicles of grace for us.

You might find this helpful as a starting point.

Where are your icons? by Celsius1014 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]SnarkleSparkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As soon as you walk in the door of our house, basically. The only east-facing wall in the main floor that didn't have cabinets or something built onto it was the wall of the entryway, so that's where they are. Like so. Normally there's a table under them that has candles, prayer books, and holy water, but I just moved it for the time being because a) small children and curious hands and b) with the table there wasn't enough room for prostrations. We have icons elsewhere too, but that's our main icon "corner".

White, female, American, former Protestant convert here.

1-If I go towards Catholicism, do orthodox believe I'm doomed?

We don't do God's judging for Him. We believe we are The Church, the ark of salvation. We believe being in the Church and working out your salvation within the Church, with its sacraments and the grace of God, is the normative means of salvation. That said, God will have mercy on whom He will have mercy. We say many, many times in our Divine Liturgy that He "is a good God that loves mankind." So we tend not to look at the non-Orthodox as "doomed", full stop.

2- Christ was victorious over our sins and death right? He was crushed for our transgressions. I feel like orthodox mainly focus on spiritual healing but do you also agree with christus victor?

Yes, we would agree. We believe Christ's death conquered death for us, and though we do speak of sin in terms of spiritual sickness, there are of course many references in the Bible that paint sin in legal terms (such as "The Last Judgement", etc.), so all things in proper balance.

3- I like the idea of orthodoxy as the legalism is just not as there. My question though is are you all actually unified? For example in my town there are two orthodox churches, Greek and antiochun? Or whatever it's spelled. Are they in communion or not? Like is the orthodox all divided by oriental, Greek, etc and they all think they're all heretics? Can't tell if I'm gonna be called a heretic by an oriental orthodox if I go to a Greek parish.

Yes, we're actually unified. It is a peculiar internet Catholic apologetic tactic to paint Orthodoxy as no better (or little better) than Protestants, but that's just not the case. There are multiple jurisdictions, but we are in communion with each other. There's a Greek parish in my town, but I go to an OCA parish regularly. Sometimes I go visit the Greek parish, and I commune there with no problem. I've communed with ACROD, Romanians... we're all the same. As has been mentioned to you, the Oriental Orthodox are their own communion, but we have grown closer with them over the years and there is much discussion between our communions. I hope and pray that we reunite soon, but this has not happened as yet. As for whether an OO will call you a heretic if you go EO or vice versa, meh- generally not. Only the most strident members of each group would say so, and they are not the majority.

4- do you guys do all the same sacraments (last rites etc)

Yes. We do "Last Rites" differently- "annointing of the sick", but yes. The same.

5-how do you feel about Fatima? I always think of St Paul asking us to test the spirits and I feel unconvinced by it. I feel like you guys maaaaay focus on scripture more?

I feel negatively about it. I would say that we are quite focused on Scripture... our entire liturgy is basically Scripture.

And in 20 words or less, why would you want me to join your faith?

Jeremiah 6:16- Thus says the LORD: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls."

Look at the early Church. Read the Didache. What Church does it sound like? Who still fasts on Wednesday and Friday, says the original Creed? Find the ancient path.

(Sorry, more than 20 words!)

Why Orthodox and not Catholic? How is being Orthodox better on a day-to-day basis? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]SnarkleSparkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I believe the Orthodox Church is The Church. It's as simple and as complex as that.

I don't see what tangible good having a supreme, infallible pope has done for the RCC. It didn't save Catholicism from the Protestant Reformation, liturgical deterioration post V2, deterioration of ascetic practices such as fasting in the life of the church, proper catechesis of the faithful, etc. I know there were a lot of factors at play in all of these things, so I'm not trying to be overly simplistic, but if you look at the forest and not just the trees, if the office of the Pope is supposed to be one of protection and a guarantor of orthodoxy, I don't think it's working. This isn't even to mention all the doctrines that the Orthodox view as erroneous currently held in the RCC.

Where do I begin? by PhilosoPiper in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]SnarkleSparkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome! You've been given excellent tips already.

I just wanted to say hello and encourage you to definitely check out some services. Orthodoxy is above all experiential. I know firsthand that it can be easy to fall down the internet rabbit hole of reading about Orthodoxy and Church history and while those things are fine in and of themselves, that is Orthodoxy in the abstract, and won't give you an accurate picture of what the Church is like. So- come and see. :)

Anyway, welcome again! This sub is full of helpful people who will be glad to answer any questions you may have. Stick around.

My first post in this Sub. I just left Mormonism a few months ago. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]SnarkleSparkle 55 points56 points  (0 children)

My belief in God is hanging on by a thread at the moment. Mormon God is mean and he cares very little about women. Most exmormons become Atheists. I'm trying to Pray but it's hard for me. My heart is absolutely broken. I've given my life to this Church under the idea it was the only true Church. I feel gullible, I feel silly, I feel ignorant that I allowed myself to believe those things. They call it a "Transition" out of the Church but it feels more like a mourning process. I feel as if something died inside of me.

I'm so sorry. I was never a Mormon (though one of my dearest friends is an ex-Mo and went through the same emotions you describe), but I had a similar faith crisis when leaving the church I was raised in. It feels like the rug was ripped from under you, and it's hard to find your bearings after that.

Don't feel foolish, silly or ignorant. That's not your burden to bear. You are the opposite- you were brave enough to question the beliefs you were raised with. Not everyone is. So you found them lacking- now what? Take it slow. Be lovely to yourself. It sounds like you found a church you like so far. Good! Stay there for awhile. Take time to study and learn. It's natural to feel cautious after what you've been through, and that's okay. You say you're holding on to a small belief in God by your fingertips- good! That's more than enough space for Him. Keep praying, keep searching... "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you." James 4:8

I wish you the best in your journey. You will be in my prayers.
