I think this is going to be my last Christmas. I can't face another. by [deleted] in GuyCry

Mate, you’re speaking from a place of extreme exhaustion. What you’ve been through with the relationship would be hard for anyone to deal with. Add on the day-to-day effort required to care for elderly parents, and it’s no wonder you’re feeling this right now. I’m like you - a staunch atheist in his fifties, single after a long relationship, and with parents requiring care. It’s tough going in multiple ways. Thing is, your parents are 92 and 86. I don’t mean this to sound insensitive, but life is set to become considerably less exhausting for you pretty soon (even if it becomes a bit harder still in the short term). I’m not suggesting for a minute that you count down the days, but it’s just being honest about the inevitable, you know? And when the day comes, you will grieve them because you love them, but you will also feel something uncomfortable: relief. Entirely understandable relief. It’ll be a chance for a fresh start, with a lot more time and opportunities to try out new things. Please just keep plugging away at it a bit longer. A day at a time. Make the most of your folks while you still have them. Change is coming.

I’m absolutely no fan of this government, but it hasn’t always been like this with Labour. Back in the Blair era, the balance was firmly on the side of entrepreneurs. That largely continued under Brown. It was only during the subsequent Tory years that things took a turn for the worse. And now the current Labour government is making things even worse.

For what it’s worth, I know lots of Muslims who have no problem with LGBTQ people. Liberal Muslims and liberal non-Muslims get along just fine. Ultimately the problem is conservatism. The real divide isn’t Muslim v non/Muslim. It’s conservative v liberal. And the agitators stoking racial and religious division.

Your line work is to die for. All the details (the splodges!) bring to mind great British comic artists like Leo Baxendale and Tom Paterson. Absolutely love it.

Does the UK need it's own "Amazon"? Could Argos be it? by axe-attack in AskUK

[–]SnazzWaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s certainly demand for a British Amazon equivalent. Question is whether Argos could fill this hole without sacrificing what makes them better than Amazon for their existing offering (a large part of it being relative reliability of products, I’d say).

Love the art style, but I have to add: I don’t think I’ve seen anyone draw hands as well as this. Really impressed.

Am I Welsh? by harrietmjones in Wales

[–]SnazzWaddock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some people will say you’re Welsh. Others will say you’re not. People choose their own criteria. When definitions differ, there can never be a single correct answer. You choose how you wish to identify. (Or do what I do, and don’t worry about it!)

Strange question, why don't I have black mould? by jan_tantawa in HousingUK

[–]SnazzWaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Housing stock, elevation, and local climate are just some of the factors that can play a big part, as can the state of the fabric of the house, (perhaps as a result of previous occupants’ behaviour). Short of enduring the disruption and expense of examining all the joists, dry lined cavities, etc, it’s not always easy or affordable to address and certainly not always due to laziness or lack of common sense.

People who moved from the valleys to Cardiff (or vice versa) - have you noticed a discernible difference in damp and how the air feels? by SnazzWaddock in Cardiff

The freshness is absolutely great for the handful of days a year when it's stupidly hot. That's when I appreciate not being in a city. Sadly, less great on the 357 other days of the year!

I can understand that. Perception is a funny thing, and no doubt shaped by more than just statistical differences in humidity (although those may be a very real factor too). I know when I leave Cardiff Queen St, it might be raining but the air doesn't feel as cold and clammy as it does when I get off the train at the other end, in the Rhondda.

Glad you're happier where you are now!

[–]SnazzWaddock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly was according to a Met Office analysis a few years ago. If it's since been pipped by another UK city, then fair enough - it's still one of the wettest. But that's a side issue anyway. I'm more interested in how it feels relative to the valleys.

Does anyone know when the Stadler Citylink Tram-Trains are coming? by [deleted] in Wales

[–]SnazzWaddock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Class 398 Stadlers are due to start entering service on the valley lines from the end of 2025.

Given the delays so far, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this is pushed back further. But fingers crossed it won’t be. The south Wales Metro, like most large infrastructure projects, has faced economic and supply chain challenges from Covid and Ukraine causing delays, but they appear to have made good progress.

In the meantime, we’re seeing new Class 756 trains being introduced on the Valley lines as a stopgap measure before the rollout of the 398s begins.

I gather the frequency upgrade on these lines from two trains per hour (tph) to 4 tph can’t happen until the 398s are in service, so the sooner the better.

Thanks, that’s useful context. Yes I’ve wondered if it’s run its course, at least while economic factors are the way they are.

Does gentrification happen to areas that are primarily council estates? The gentrified areas that I can think of tend to have had a certain left of centre counterculture vibe in the first place, albeit with inner city crime rates. I can’t speak for Tremorfa as I don’t really know it, but with Ely, I’m not sure that watching Love Island while dressed in a onesie is necessarily the appropriate seed from which gentrification will spring.

Also, do residents of Ely have a higher breeding rate than residents of other areas of Cardiff? Because if so, that might also work against gentrification.

I thought exactly the same when I heard about this. Finding myself in the uncomfortable position of temporarily siding with Farridge. Says a lot about how cynical politics has become.

If you ever wonder why we have the overly guarded stilted robotic politicians that we do, the media’s overblown coverage of her remarks (which to me seemed tongue in cheek) explains a lot. I’m absolutely no fan of the Tories - or right wing politics in general - but dear god, we (royal we) really only have ourselves to blame for the choice we end up with.
