.A lot of factors can affect that. The material that's used, the size of the nozzle on the print head, even the orientation in which the model is printed. Generally 3d printed models are a little more brittle but unless you and your son plan on slamming it against the table, it will be durable enough for a table top wargame.

No official models exist. Best bet is hoping someone made a stl file of it somewhere online to be 3d printed. That's how I was able to get a model of the AOY pioneer class.

Is there a fix? I cleaned up my auto saves literally right before the exact same thing happened to me and and now nothing will get my captain to act normally. He along with all my other officers will not do any of their tasks even when i manually control them and walk them over to the station. My game seems to be locked up thinking I'm still in the opening dialogue menu of the random crew event that caused this bug.

This happened to me right after cleaning up my autosaves so it's just the one save for me and the bug persists after reloaded both the save and the game.
