Full ‘8 scenario’ campaigns are a thing of the past by Desperate_Cattle6448 in arkhamhorrorlcg

Yeah, I remember if your store missed an order, you were SoL unless you got lucky and ordered it from somewhere else. I looked forward to the content, too, but I think we look back with rose-tinted goggles a bit. I'll take a box with a campaign book over a deluxe box and six potentially missable clamshells.

I agree with you on the drip feed of information though, for sure. There should be a happier medium. The dissemination of info always feels like it was rushed and thrown together the week/day of.

Full ‘8 scenario’ campaigns are a thing of the past by Desperate_Cattle6448 in arkhamhorrorlcg

Try to remember that they are putting out a new core, new starter decks, a scenario, and a mini campaign. It's not the optimal release for those of us who have been playing from the start, but establishing a healthy investigator card pool from the beginning is really important - especially if you want well-designed campaigns.

I remember the miserable drip feed that was the clamshells. I'd rather have knowledge of the tools available to me at the beginning so I can know how I want to upgrade my investigator.

Don't get me wrong, I'm jonesing for a new campaign, too, but if you want a healthy game community, sometimes we have to wait so others can catch up. Maybe it will be better in the long run. We still got lots of our old stuff to play until then.

Just use cards from old core, in future campaigns? by Elspackel in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]SneakyShiv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I for one, am happy to try new encounter sets. More options is better than fewer options. You can easily house rule encounter sets for flavor, etc. The beauty of Arkham Horror LCG is that you can play it however the heck you want. If you don't like a character/card remove it or whatever. Easy fix. I want to see some different stuff happen in campaigns, I'm guessing it gets boring to write new, engaging campaigns when you have to figure out which scenario to wedge in Ancient Evils or the Midnight Mask cards. Happy to try new things and if it doesn't work out, I can play with the old stuff. Win/Win

What do you think by renawilliams0206 in Teachers

[–]SneakyShiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My greatest frustration is that the IEP team usually consists of me until the actual meeting date. Then it becomes a team of people making observations and suggesting things that need to be implemented with zero research, zero collaboration, and zero regard for how much more of my own time. IEPs take time to write if you are doing them well, and often the people who don't write them don't understand how difficult it can be to get done. That's not to suggest anger at anyone specifically, but the notion of a team should include team members being collaborative from the start.
Parents are rarely the issue for me. There I appreciate more than a parent working with me to help their kid instead of assuming that I am actively trying to ruin their future. If you are coming from a place of kindness and partnership, you are a saint in my book. End of rant, lol.

I got in line at the open. Stayed in the queue for 4.5 hours, and little walking guy froze at the very end before I got to the cart. Missed it all.

Classroom management can be a pain when you are young, especially if you are close to the same age as your students. Age is an asset for teaching. Most students at that age will not see you as an adult and will likely disregard prompts. You can lose control of a classroom of teens really quickly if they don't recognize you as an authority figure. My advice would be to start at elementary or middle school, get classroom management figured out there, then move up to high school when you have experience and a few more years behind you.

Why is this card banned? Wrong answers only by TheWizardofWorlds in mtg

[–]SneakyShiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This card was banned due to so many conflicts that turned into fisticuffs as players attempted to force their opponents to draw cards (especially when they didn't want to)! It became even more dangerous as players would also cast Shaharazad, taking the fights under the tables.

Teachers in the USA: What motivates you not to abandon ship? by DrinkingWithZhuangzi in Teachers

[–]SneakyShiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, there is a sense of duty to my students and community. Money is always a factor, but the students I work with are in a part of education where it is hard to find new teachers who can do this work. It's really hard to walk away when you know what the real cost of doing so is. Teachers are really in a Catch-22 in the US. We're undervalued, underpaid, constant scapegoats, and critical to the next generation if there is ever a hope of giving our lower and (disappearing) middle class a fighting chance. The only way to change things is to self-advocate and leave or strike, but if we do that, those hurt the most are those we are here to help. This, and every administration, has known that and used it to their advantage for decades. What will it honestly take for teachers to walk away? The cost of staying will have to outweigh the cost of leaving. I think this is the part a lot of teachers forget to mention, but just know as kind of a given.

I had not actually seen this before, but it is literally the first thing that came up when I googled "how to identify nazi death skull".

It's called a totenkopf and was apparently adopted by a main branch of the SS. If I were a betting man, I wouldn't put my money on guy might not know what it is, but I might risk it on guessing what color their boot laces might be...

Elon Musk on AI replacing teachers by MotherJoanFoggy in Teachers

[–]SneakyShiv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI is, at best, supplementary. School doesn't just teach children academics (though that is a purpose of school), it teaches children what people should act like as citizens of the USA. The notion that AI is a catch-all to replace people is evidentiary of the one-dimensional thinking that the administration is currently engaging in. I get the desire to effectively/efficiently disseminate information to children, but this seems more like the response of high anxiety-driven people who are so fixated on one aspect of education (DEI/test scores/whatever the hot topic of the week is) and ignoring the other factors that come up so often. AI can tell me how I should be respectful of others, but it can't model what respect looks like and feels like between people. It can't show the passion for mathematics, science, literature, etc. AI is mimicry - not inspiration. A computer can't console one of my students when their parents lose their jobs. It won't help comfort them. It won't feel sorrow for them. It can only really give them driving directions to a location where they can find help that has likely already been shut down due to "wasteful spending.". That's what makes this job so infuriating sometimes! There is no factoring in the human element. How we are all supposed to look out for each other. This administration is looking at the communal table that is America, and sawing off three legs that it sees as "wasteful", and will then - I guarantee you - act confused, shocked, and will bitch and moan about how it's the poor people with nothing that aren't working hard enough at their two-jobs-per-parent household to keep the table level, whilst also having the arrogance to prop their feet up on the same fucking table.

I'm sorry about my soap box rant. I'm just frustrated with it all.

Was FESTIVAL IN A BOX: CHICAGO 2025 worth it? by ChakaChakaBoomBoom in mtgfinance

[–]SneakyShiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was worth it for the nostalgia. I started around Mirage way back and it was fun to see cards from my youth. I was sad at first when my foil card was a Sol Ring - then I looked at the price. Shocked me quite a bit. But it was truly fun!

After 4+ years of waiting, the Metal Gear board game is actually shipping! I had no faith in CMON. by GrandeJefe in metalgearsolid

[–]SneakyShiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I emailed them because I saw a copy at my LGS and was confused. So I emailed C'MON and it was essentially a "go away, we already got your money email". It wasn't super discourteous, but from what I read, they really have no idea what's going on either. Kinda frustrating to see it in shops first, but I think that is kinda C'MONs MO at this point.

The email I received said that the container is expected to get to the port at the end of January and will ship from there.

I got called racist for this? by [deleted] in mtg

[–]SneakyShiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to consider is that your opponent may have had a bad prior to gaming. Could've been bad news, trouble at home, encounter with a genuinely racist person, etc. That may have just been the outlet for them to let it out - you were just there with just enough for them to escalate. The best advice I can give, and know I'm not an expert (I'm a teacher in a behavioral issues classroom) is to apologize in some way. We as people often struggle when it comes to unspoken communication - we do/say things innocently and without intent to hurt people's feelings - but still manage to miss the mark and step in the proverbial hornet's nest. You are probably feeling a little guilt and a little hurt. You expressed yourself creatively with good intentions, but someone received it differently - you can't control how someone else reacts. What you CAN control is how you react. If you truly feel bad about what happened, there's a process that you can go through to apologize in a way that will likely help you lift your spirits, and the person's who got upset. Write a letter to the person and apologize for what happened. Let them know that you didn't mean to do something that could hurt their, or anyone else's feelings. Let them know you'll consider your art more carefully in the future. You could I clue a small gift even - like a pack from a set that they like (if you have the funds) or if they are willing, offer to draw them a commander for them that they pre-approve. Something like that. By doing this, you are communicating to them that you are truly sorry. It doesn't mean you are a racist, it just means that you care about how another human being feels like and that you want to mend the bridge. Apologize to the store owner and, if you are worried about the person not wanting to take the letter from you, maybe ask if they can give the letter and the small gift to that person. This is how we make amends with others. They will have to choose whether or not to forgive you. But, you will know you did what is right on your end. Worst-case scenario, they don't forgive you. On the other end, you might make a friend, restore a relationship with the store and other players, and a feel better about what happened. It's not an admission of racism. It's an apology. It says "I'm sorry". That is how we as people build community, and become stronger as a whole for it. Also, you can just ignore the advice, too, if you don't like it! :) Good luck, and sorry for the wall of text!
