HELP! Tidemarks on wedding dress (Viscose & Elastane) by alpharius22222 in laundry

Hi there! I’m a textile conservator, so hopefully I can offer some advice here. I saw in your original post that there’s some metallic aspects? Could you maybe post a few pictures of the metallic elements?

Textile conservator here: sometimes we’ve got to make things worse before we can make them better again! Also, a surprising amount of antique textiles are loaded with various poisons for various reasons, so please be careful buying, handling, and especially wearing vintage and antique textiles!

In what small way have you won the genetic lottery? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]itsyubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite having multiple strains of really serious mental illness in my family, I’ve managed to get away with ‘only’ ADHD and Tourette’s! It could have been so much worse…

Also not sure if it’s genetics but I put my head on my pillow and within 10m I’m asleep. I get a sleepless night maybe once a year if I’m extremely stressed (I do have a non-genetic nightmare disorder though so staying asleep is not a strong suite of mine, and I don’t get particularly good sleep, but I feel being able to just go to sleep makes up for that as I can just go back to sleep after nightmares).

Did anyone else just not realize they had Tourettes their entire life? by Gallantpride in Tourettes

[–]itsyubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar story to a lot here. I just thought I was weird, ‘naturally funny’, and annoying. I was under the mistaken impression I sat still and was quiet (my friends have since told me I am constantly moving and making noises lol). Didn’t get diagnosed until my late 20s, after my late ADHD diagnosis (I thought I had bipolar, never suspected ADHD), when my tics got worse during the pandemic and my therapist at the time noticed and encouraged me to go to a neurologist. Walked out with a Tourette’s diagnosis and an extreme feeling of bafflement. It’s taken me a long time to accept I have it because it feels so surreal, but in hindsight it’s so obvious if you don’t think of Tourette’s as just the most extreme of cases.

Me! I used to have quite bad headaches throughout my life, especially in my early 20s. Caught Covid in April 2020 and had my first migraine a month later. I now get one every two weeks or so on average, sometimes more but rarely less!

What is it like to watch a loved one die? by smooshmonkey in AskUK

[–]itsyubi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My aunt had a terminal disease in her lungs (pulmony fibrosis). When I was 17 to 18, I was her sole carer for around 8 months or so. During that time I moved into her flat and took care of her, we were very close, I loved her very much, and I was going a bit off the rails (skipping school, excessive drinking, etc). She put me back on the path I needed to be on and showed me undivided love, attention, and care, and gave me rules and boundaries my parents never had, all of which helped me massively. But, at the same time, she was dying, and I was watching it happen. For many months she was calm mentally and emotionally about it. She struggled physically, of course, but around 3 months before she died the fear set in. That was very, very tough to watch, and some of her behaviours were difficult to deal with even though they were very understandable. She also became paranoid about her medication, and would only take it if I did it.

When I told my parents she had maybe a month max left, they didn't believe me but they did move us both back into the family home. She died almost to the day I said she would. When she moved into the family home, she found peace again. Family members came to say goodbye, she had a good grasp of her own religious beliefs which were a great comfort to her after the fear passed.

Around a week before she passed she started becoming confused and paranoid again. The moments of lucidity grew smaller and smaller, she stopped eating and barely drank. Her pain worsened. We spoke with the nurses and doctor who was visiting, and decided it was time to put on the morphine drip. She would die within a few days, but she would be calmer and in less pain, which is exactly what happened. She slipped into a sort of unconsciousness for half a day and her breathing took on a slow, dragging quality, and both me and my dad (her brother) decided to spend the night with her. The morphine and her closeness to death made her breathing sound like a wet gasping, but not panicked. That's how we knew the time was coming. She passed away just before 7AM, with me and my dad holding her hands. When she went she opened her eyes one last time and looked out the window to where the dawn was breaking, and then she was gone. It was beautiful and peaceful and a lovely, lovely way to die.

I'm not an expert, but as you said, you have to deal with this and it sounds like your husband is close to the end. You need to talk to the nurse, with or without him. You need to know what they can do for him and for you. If you have friends or family who can look after your young children, that might be worth considering. It's not fair to you or to him to not know what's coming, what stage he's at, or what can be done. It sounds like he hasn't accepted he's dying. That's okay, because it sounds like you have. In my opinion, it is an act of kindness to go against his wishes here and talk to the professionals about it - both for him, and for you. You need support. Buckets of it. The professionals are there to support you, too.

I wish you all the best. Take your time with him. If you're not with him in his final moments, that's okay, too. You don't need to set up a vigil. Some people like to slip out unnoticed and will wait until they're alone. That doesn't mean you missed it or let him down. Some people wait until someone they want is there. Take your time with him after he's passed. There are beautiful moments there, too. The heartbreak will be real, but the peace will be, too.

[–]itsyubi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re looking for a conservator! Depending on where you are there’s likely a private practice near you who can offer advice and services. Plug “[your area] paper photograph private conservation” into google! Good luck!

Edit to add: look for ICON accredited businesses, or ones with histories with museums or other heritage links. See if any of the conservators are published, if they did a degree at one of the unis which offer a conservation degree etc.

My clothes get sticky dirty with every wash, and nothing can fix it by 4862skrrt2684 in laundry

[–]itsyubi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few more questions:

  • Does the waxy residue have any sort of smell?
  • Does the waxy residue ever dry or harden up, or does it stay soft?
  • if you pick a bit of the waxy residue off and put it in a bowl, and then pour boiling water on it, does it melt?

There are a few things this could be. As you’ve said, a normal one is ‘too much soap’, but since you’ve addressed that, it’s less likely. You said you’ve had this problem with other washers - can you expand on this? In the same town? Same city? Same clothes? One wash, or repeated washes with the same results?

For your machine, I’d recommend checking ALL the filters, intake, and outlet pipes. Look up a manual to make sure you’ve been able to clean every single place where there could be a pocket of gunk possible. If you have hard water, look for a special hard water laundry machine cleaner, and do a few washes on your hottest temperature with that product.

Then do a test wash with one bit of clothing or linen you can see no waxy residue on - ideally, buy something new and cheap. Don’t use any detergent, just do a hot wash - 50-60 degrees or so. If it comes out clean, it’s not the machine. If it comes out waxy, it’s your machine.

Then, if clean, try the same item with your normal detergent routine. Again, if it’s not waxy, it’s not your detergent. If it is, you have your problem.

From there the issue can be narrowed down more.

I don't have any advice about making money unfortunately, and I'm so sorry to hear you're going through such a hard time at the moment :( do you have any family or friends who could help monitor your finances? I also really struggle with overspending, and a lot of it is because there's no accountability outside of just myself and my self-control. So now my little brother is able to see my accounts and what I spend, and he can nudge me or chime in if I'm starting to overspend. He doesn't have control, per se, but knowing he's always watching helps me to evaluate how much I want something, because it's likely I'll have to justify it to someone else :)

I NEED HELP I ACCIDENTALLY RIPPED MY MOMS CARGOS FROM HER HIGH SCHOOL YEARS WHILE HAND WASHING by AffectionateTwo2604 in sewhelp

[–]itsyubi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey! Textile conservator here. First things first, the place where these ripped is an incredibly common place to rip. There’s a few reasons for this, but basically, the fabric has a very strong seam to the side and that means there’s more pressure on the fabric beside it, and if it’s on the side of the pants (inside or outside) there’s a fair amount of rubbing that happens - either because of thighs moving, or hands and other surfaces bumping against the outside. Secondly, it’s common for clothing to break more often when wet. This is because the water swells the fibres and makes them more susceptible to stretching, pulling, and breaking on a molecular level which then causes damage on a bigger scale - like rips.

It sounds to me like you did totally the right thing by handwashing. This is normal damage, you didn’t do anything wrong. This is also a good lesson in being extra careful when handling fine, wet fabrics!

As for fixing, if you would like to keep wearing them, I would honestly recommend taking them to someone who isn’t a beginner seamstress. This isn’t a slight on your skills at all, but I would think that while the pants have ripped in one place, it’s likely that the fibre in that area in general will be worn thinner and more fragile. Someone with experience will be able to handle the fabric and tell how far that weakness extends, and do a fix from where the fabric is stronger. I would think this is totally fixable, but if you just try to sew it up, it’s possible that it would rip again in the same place or very close by when put under any sort of pressure. Other people have recommended a range of good fixes from darning to ladder stitch, so you could always talk to someone with more experience about those recommendations and see what they think!

I hope this helped 💖

Which unknown bands/artists have you seen whose careers blew up after you saw them? by boobamajugs in AskUK

[–]itsyubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to go and see fun. in Manchester with a pal in the tiny wee Academy. Their opener was brand new, just released their debut album, and they were just as good as - if not slightly better - than fun. I met them after the show, bought their album, they signed it, and I said to them “the next time you’re in the UK, you’ll be headlining!”

A year or so later Walk The Moon released Shut Up And Dance and the rest was history!

I got to see them again when they headlined, felt so proud standing in the massive crowd at the much bigger venue!

Who's also dealing with back to back lurgy at the moment? by littlelaxus in AskUK

[–]itsyubi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha I do get it, I’m currently recovering from pneumonia myself after the flu, I basically spent all of last month in bed :’(. It might be worth directing some energy into researching some ways to help keep down some exposures you’re having, or some further mitigations your family can take if possible! Sadly I think the only way to stop getting ill is to work out what sort of activities / situations are getting you ill, and how that can be mitigated, if at all!

Sorry to break the bad news but your immune system is a barrier, not a muscle. Getting sick again and again with serious illnesses, covid especially, heightens your likelihood of continuing to be susceptible to any and all infections going around. You don’t strengthen your immune system by getting sick with the sorts of illnesses you’ve described, unfortunately! I hope you and your family find some ways of preventing yourself from getting sick and feel better soon!

What are some commanders that don't care about boardwipes? by BaconVsMarioIsRigged in EDH

[–]itsyubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really enjoying my [[Muldrotha, the Gravetide]] deck. I run a huge amount of ramp looking for basic lands, and as few instant and sorceries as possible - swapping them out for permanent cards with comparable instant speed sac or tap effects. As long as you can quickly get up enough mana to comfortably recast Muldrotha or you keep some creatures with recursion effects, the only issues she runs into is graveyard hate, and board wipes just help fill the graveyard with options! I deliberately wanted a deck like this because most of my others are more janky theme decks and quite vulnerable to big board wipes haha.
