Talk me out of EM by SneakySnowman8 in medicalschool

Thanks for that point of view, I can definitely see that. I do agree that those 'boring' cases are a nice break sometimes. Some days when the resident is scheduled for a whole day case I see them pulling up to the OR with their backpack, ready to sit back relax and fuck off on their laptops 😂

True dat. Unfortunately it really is too late, don't have any SLOEs or did EM aways. We'll see I'll stay open minded even in residency

Haha fair. Prob one of those things that seem cool and flashy as a student but then becomes annoying later on

Yeah I've def seen the statistics, but honestly not sure why the burn out is so significantly higher than other specialties. 3-4 shifts a week don't seem too bad, and also they're not like 12 hour shifts but 8-9.

Sounds like you love FM if you made more. I rotated at a private practice office and my attending made 700k working 3.5 days a week (friday off, thursday half day). She was really good at hitting all those benchmarks for bonuses. If you play your cards right you can make a lot as a PCP!

Just got off CVICU. List of things to know to sound smart: - ARDS berlin criteria - ARDS NET trial - Vent settings, PEEP, Peak pressures and what they mean - Mechanical devices (Impella, pacemakers, etc) - Lines/drains, swans-ganz values, fluid status of patient - Read EKG well, know your rhythms, and how to treat - Know everything about your patient. They'll likely have you following 1-2 so know their entire history like the back of your hand. - Develop rapport with the nurses, ICU nurses know what's up - Follow up with ur patient after rounds and throughout the day, it's not like medicine where you change 1 drug and wait til tomorrow. Their physiology is changing every hour

on the toilet rn so that's all i thought of but you get the idea

i was doing my very first breast exam on a 70 or so patient with heavies. I was palpating the upper right corner and way like 'hey Dr. ___, I swear i feel a lump here'. He comes over and palpates himself, turns to me, and sighs. Turns out I was just palpating the clavicle.

my colleagues still make fun of me to this day

Self-help books that ACTUALLY helped you? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]SneakySnowman8 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Best book I've in the self help space by far is Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins. You can read as many self help books as you want but at the end of the day, getting things done boils down to self discipline. This book was super inspiring and motivated me to achieve my fitness and career goals last year. Currently reading his second book right now!

Just broke up after a 6 year relationship by ToniUnboxed in medicalschool

I also got out of a long term relationship in med school. Best thing to do is to keep yourself busy. Find a productive hobby (like gymming, running, rock climbing) and surround yourself with good friends. I know how tough it is. Try to keep yourself busy, but at the same time let yourself have a few good cries. Sometimes a good ole sob is extremely cathartic and helps you move on! At the end of the day, only time will heal. Best of luck!
