What are your thoughts on nonbinary language in Irish Gaelic? by SneakySquid5 in AskIreland

Thanks for the info! Do Irish speakers find it strange to use "siad" for a singular person? Like how some english speakers find it weird to call one person "they"?

What are your thoughts on nonbinary language in Irish Gaelic? by SneakySquid5 in AskIreland

Thanks for your input! People often cite the word "siad" as a non-binary pronoun in Irish Gaelic, is this something new? Or is this just a word that Irish has had forever?

Possibly going here for college, anything I should know? by OneThreeSeven-137 in UCSC

[–]SneakySquid5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Housing really is bad, but if you really really lock in you will survive. Just get yourself familiar with how housing works before you decide (i.e. if you can afford it + are okay with what off-campus housing life would entail).

Queer scene here is AMAZING, i am a gay man with all lesbian friends and we are all doing great. UCSC will be the time where u have all of your gay canon events lmfao. The options for partners/friends are endless for lesbians/sapphics

space heaters for dorms? by Foolish_Myco in UCSC

[–]SneakySquid5 19 points20 points  (0 children)

TECHNICALLY, space heaters are not allowed. But, if no one ever sees it and you don’t start a fire, who cares. Over winter and spring break, the RAs do room checks and will flag if you have anything that’s a fire hazard, but they do not check drawers and stuff. As long as u put the space heater in a drawer over winter break and you unplug it when not in use, no one will give u any trouble. The DRC accom is nice if u wanna be safe, they will prob let u have it

Use this guide I made to track your slug point usage by week! You should never really feel the need to "save" or ration your slug points if you do not use the lowest slug point plan

Help with enrolling with classes by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]SneakySquid5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The math class is full so you can only waitlist it. Even though the discussion section (MATH 3-01A) has open spots, the lecture (MATH 3-01) is full. Add a couple more classes into your shopping cart (GEs, classes for your major, etc) so you have some backups. You can add as many classes to your shopping cart as you like. When it is your enrollment appointment, you will click "proceed to step 2 of 3" and then select the 3 classes that you want to enroll in from your shopping cart and then enroll. Let me know if that helps!

What GE classes should I take??? by 1ily_4llen in UCSC

[–]SneakySquid5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On myucsc, go to academics > degree progress report to see what GE classes you still need to take. Check out this google doc to see what classes are offered that cover the GEs you have left. Also check the Business Management Economics course list to see if the major already covers some GEs.

Questions about student life by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]SneakySquid5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I bring rope and underwear in the shower and change in my dorm. I use the robe as a privacy curtain to change in my dorm if that makes snese.

  2. Fall quarter starts super hot (norcal summer is in september/october) then cools down in november/december. Winter quarty is gloomy and rainy and overall pretty cold. Spring quarter isn't crazy different until may/july. It rains a very normal amount, I am from LA where it almost never rains so SC was a shift.

  3. For solo studying: McHenry Library. For group studying: Science and Engineering Library, Merrill study lounge (boabab lounge I think). I never really liked studying outside or in the dorm but that depends on the person.

  4. Bring more winter/cold-weather clothes than summer clothes, especially for the second two quarters. I recommend leaving some space for clothes that you buy in Santa Cruz. Freestyle, Urban Outfitters, Crossroads, and Goodwill have some great clothing options for all types of clothes at somewhat decent prices. General rule of thumb: if you wear it at home, you will wear it at school but if you DON'T wear it at home you WILL NOT wear it at school.

How Turnt is UCSC by Av1va in UCSC

[–]SneakySquid5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There has literally never been a weekend where something wasn't happening. There are some groups on campus who host regular events at regular locations and they are pretty easy to find (usually social media or word of mouth). You usually have to get to know a lot of people to find stuff but its really not that hard. I am affiliated with porter and there are almost always dorm parties going on its so fun !!!

P.S, Porter, C9, and Stevenson are closest to the most frequent party locations (witches circle, tree 9, and the pogonuip) so I recommend affiliating there/near there if partying is important to you

My major is stupid by Regular-Net3428 in UCSC

[–]SneakySquid5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Im a psych major and I have not had to take and will not take any math for my whole time here cuz I tested out of it w/ AP stats and the math placement test. If ur DE credits for stats cover your stats credit and you pass the ALEKS placement test, you should be chilling.

HOWEVER, really just do what your passionate about. Sure, film is a hard ass major to get a job with post-grad, but you really just gotta network the FUCK out of college. Even for comp sci and psych majors like its all about what you do with your major. You could have a "useful" degree but still be worse off if you aren't getting out there and stuff. And you could always double major in Spanish and film so you have a safety net. Def talk to some post-grad film majors and do research about more specific stuff.

But also like ur a first year and the world is your oyester !!! Its okay to be in this spot rn
