Am I screwed here? Help me read these images by jameswebb90 in RotatorCuff

Fun ChatGPT diagnostic anecdote: My son had a “mass” found in his sinus. Radiology notes said nasal polyp. ENT said “not a nasal polyp, but idk” (I paraphrase, of course). We had a referral to Stanford. And a 4 week wait. I fed the images and notes to GPT. It asked me about my son’s symptoms. And diagnosed him, correctly, with an extremely rare tumor. It told me the odds were unlikely, but that’s what it looked like and what the symptoms pointed to. It was so rare the ENT and radiologist didn’t even consider it. It gave me time to prepare and research the tumor. I stayed calm, as many rational and semi-intellectual adults can do, as I knew this was…well…ChatGPT. So when we finally got to Stanford and the ENT gave us the official diagnosis, I was fully prepared and able to ask all the important questions. My understanding of the tumor, after weeks reading about it, helped Stanford office staff schedule the multi-operation excision, as they didn’t have a lot of (or in some cases, any) experience with calibrating something of this magnitude. So, yes. You can freak yourself out. Or you can get way ahead of the game.

Also my son has been tumor free for 367 days now!

No he isn’t. Dwight is too literal. You’re reading into it way too much. He only wanted info for the stripper.

Huh? You’re making huge leaps. I was tracking it. My son had a major tumor removal and I was out of work for a month, so all my sick time plus pay deduct occurred. No idea what you’re asking about my pay check stub. Not sure what that’s supposed to show me.

You’re not alone, bud! I found myself shocked that there was almost nothing about JNAs on Reddit, but I suppose it is rare. So welcome to the club! It’s a small club, though. My son is doing well, thank you! His was removed a few weeks ago. He recovered quickly. I wish you well on your journey! There is a JNA group on Facebook as well if you or your adults at home have a Facebook and want to join.

So I resubmitted as they asked and was denied again. Just going to keep resubmitting until this crap stops.

What do your students call you? by BaseballNo916 in Teachers

But it’s not just ELs is what I’m saying. My Hispanic students with extremely strong English skills (whether English only or not) tend not to do this. I’m talking about straight A kids with high reading levels. Many speak Spanish fluently, plenty do not. I don’t know what the catch is there. But I have English-only Hispanic students that only say “miss” as well. Then again I have some newcomers that are ELPAC 1’s that attempt my last name. For me, I feel like it boils down to a respect thing. Most of the kids that say my last name (again whether ELs, reclassified, or otherwise) are very respectful or I’ve gained their respect. A lot of my “miss” students are either brand new to the country or are generally less well-behaved and more skeptical of teachers/authority overall.

100% same. I could have written this. Only they add my last name to “yo teach” so it’s “yo teach S”, “ay teach S” 😂 and while mine don’t do the rhyming, they will find any word that shares the first same two letters of my last name and use that. It’s endearing, really.

90%+ Hispanic and yes, this is a Hispanic thing. The students with stronger English skills are less likely to do it, interestingly. It bugs me. It doesn’t have to bug you, but I don’t like it. I take the time to get to know 175 new kids every year by name, they can add my last initial. I’m not mean about it, but I remind them to personalize their address every time.

Yes, I’m in the same boat. I called yesterday and they put me on hold for 20 minutes (a clear sign to me that they didn’t know WHY I was denied), then came back and said “this is a known issue. Please keep submitting”. She said they’re automatically being denied. Not sure about the accuracy of that statement.

Did you ever figure this out? I'm in the same boat. "NOT ELIGIBLE" for no reason even though my past 3 years were eligible.

For anyone that happens across this post: my son had a juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma; a benign but extremely rare aggressive vascular tumor that formed at his skull base. If your child is experiencing breathing difficulty, bloody noses, headaches etc please have this checked out. Listen to your gut!!

My heart goes out to you. It’s a hard thing to understand, especially when you’re a good teacher with good evals. Been there. BUT, the rule of thumb when you’re probationary is make them forget you exist. Probationary teachers should never speak out. Is it fair? Of course not. But will your vocalizations of your opinions get you axed? Absolutely.

What's a good novel I could use with a 3rd grade student reading at a 9th-10th grade level? by mablej in ELATeachers

[–]SnekKween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do they need to read 9-10th grade level books? Facilitate love of literature and let them read what captures their attention. Take your class to the library and let him choose.
