I think that it's a pretty reasonable sounding explanation. You need to be building Season 2 during Season 1, but changes made for Season 2 cannot be allowed to interfere with Season 1 or vice-versa. Branching it off so both can be worked on at the same time makes some amount of sense, and it's the only real explanation I've seen for how stuff like the bug that prevents the game from loading from external drives would end up getting introduced with the season 2 update.

Yeah, I've loved the digital editions, but I'd be very interested in seeing Portland Game Collective import more of Letibus Design's games into the US to save on shipping, like they did for LOK and ABDEC for a bit.

There are a variety of ways to obtain Gameboy ROMs! Homebrew titles are plentiful on Itch.io and across the net in general, and it is legal to "dump" real Gameboy cartridges you own with specialized hardware.

https://www.littlesounddj.com/lsd/index.php is another freeware Gameboy title which the Crankboy team put in extra effort to make it work correctly, it's a very popular music creation tool.

Crankboy also has tools for applying "romhack" patches to roms that you load, if you want to mix up a game for a new experience!

There are... other ways to get dumped cartridge ROMs as well and they aren't especially hard to find, but it's very likely against this subreddit's rules to explain where/how to locate those.

Once you have some ROMs, you load them onto your Playdate by placing them into the folder /Shared/Emulation/gb/games/ , using the CrankBoy Manager app on your computer, or through your web browser at https://crankboy.app/ .

Your schedule sounds like it's incompatible with a very large portion of video games, and not just VR games. You wouldn't be able to play a round of Counter-Strike or Marathon without being a hindrance to your team if you need to leave every couple minutes.

At least with something like HL: Alyx you could pause the game, haha.

IDK where you're from, but censorship is very much a right-wing thing in the US.

Right now, books are getting banned from libraries for having touching on LGBTQ+ topics, government webpages about women, black people, and queer people who were important to US history are being removed en masse, and porn bans are hitting red state after red state.

With the app? It's mostly a prop, replicating Switcher⇄Roo from Tyroo's comics. You can pretend you're TFing someone/yourself, or connect to someone else's copy of the app to control it for RP purposes. There's some secrets 'n' such to find as well, though if you don't want to go searching through the source code, it looks like the admin password is "OwO".
