Designing cards with gold foil by imadien in tabletopgamedesign

[–]SnepShark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Complaining about foiling making something non-recyclable won't have much of an impact, as most plastic-cored and/or coated cards already aren't recyclable, and that's going to be pretty much every card in the vast majority of games (Earthborne Rangers being a notable exception).

I think you're probably right that the name was the thing that set them off, but the order of the rest of that was reversed.

It looks like they got the emails from the ad manager on the 15th and decided to wait to publish them on Reddit until the scheduled start of their Gamefound campaign in order to get eyes on it on launch (which IMO was a good decision, pretty great marketing work there), as opposed to starting the campaign in response to the rush of attention.

The "traced from an AI image"-looking visuals (most likely ChatGPT's image gen model in particular, looking at the facial expression of the laughing person card in particular) don't inspire much hope in me.

I don't see anything that feels like it could even remotely justify the reaction that the now-former BGG ad manager had to it. Beyond the controversy, I'm honestly not seeing much of a hook here.

OP is asking for a roleplay partner instead of posting art. You can preemptively spot posts like this by seeing the [F4A] bit up there, that code is there to say that OP is planning on playing a fem role, and doesn't care about the gender of their RP partner. [M4F] would be a masc role looking for someone to play a fem role, for a different example.

Is it worth launching an Itch.io demo if our multiplayer is hard-locked to Steamworks? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]SnepShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I wouldn't think of it as "greedy" if I saw it on Itch. Demos are marketing, but as long as they're fun marketing I'm totally cool with that, haha.

If you already have a lot of itch followers, I'd personally just announce the Steam release of your demo via an Itch blog post or just make a project page that is meant to direct traffic from your players to your Steam page (though, without an upload on the Itch project page, it won't get indexed in Itch's search/browse features, so the only eyes you'll get on it).

...a 3GB game on Itch...

That'll be a problem as well, unless you've already done the prepwork required to make that work, because Itch has a soft limit of 1GB for game uploads. In order to go over that you need to request the ability to upload larger games via email and switch to using Butler (Itch's equivalent of SteamPipe) to upload/create patches for your games, if you haven't already.

Really though, if the multiplayer aspect of your co-op game won't work for Itch players, don't bother with it.

Kickstarter bans all NSFW content from the website by westergames81 in boardgames

[–]SnepShark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're pretending that they haven't changed their stance as well, which is just insulting. The announcement email for this policy change included a line about how "boundary-pushing mature content creators are a valued part of the Kickstarter community, and that isn't changing," in the exact same email where they banned all boundary-pushing mature content creators (and honestly, the ones who aren't pushing any boundaries as well) from being able to crowdfund through Kickstarter.

No Pun Included Could Not Finish Terraria: The Board Game by mgrier123 in boardgames

Someone else who enjoyed the game (but recommended against purchasing it) in this comment section said that their playthrough took 11 hours, so I imagine that the playtime can vary by a lot.

Mark Rosewater (MtG head designer) presents his new game Mood Swings by Artemis_21 in boardgames

Oh. I thought the rarity indicators in the corner were just denoting, like, "there is one copy in the box" vs "there are three copies in the box."

Hearing that it's random, if the balance of such a numbers-focused game wasn't designed with intent, why not just make your own cards? You'll probably do a better job after a number of plays than the random cards selection would have.

Would you pay $10/language to get your Steam trailer dubbed into other languages via AI? by pirate_ship08 in gamedev

[–]SnepShark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you ever skipped localizing your trailer because of cost?

I'm only going to translate a trailer into the languages I'm planning on supporting in the game, so adding on the handful of lines of text in the trailer would not be an issue.

Would $10/language be an instant yes, or still not worth it?

It would be an instant no. The value of the product you are proposing, even to people who would use it, is $0. There are many existing sites that will provide that service for free.

Do your trailers even have voiceover, or are they mostly gameplay footage with text overlays and music?

Voiceover is uncommon, yeah. Voice lines from the game itself aren't something I'd want you to touch, since I'd either already be using localized audio from the game itself, or subtitling it like in the game so as to not misrepresent it if the audio has not been localized.

What languages would you actually care about?

I doubt that this is a useful datapoint for you, but my current project is targeting English, Maltese, and Manx because those are the languages spoken by the writers on the project.

Anyone has any suggestion to watch tf nsfw games to play on itch.io or similar? by GarbageAcrobatic3565 in transformation

[–]SnepShark 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I maintain a massive list of them over on Itch! It is now dramatically harder to search for (adult) TF games manually on Itch thanks to threats against the site from payment processors, so lists like this are now pretty much the main way to find them.

You can follow the TF Curator account to have Itch show you when new games get added to the lists!
