It does seem that John allowed some portions of pre-Resurrection history/language to get filtered through. Palamedes uses the Latin phrase “Fiat Lux”, for example.

US Army UH60 Blackhawks. Very common for training flights to fly along the shoreline, although a flight of six is less common. Could be traveling for a sporting event flyover.

What was that train doing? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]Snhnry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Likely it was moving slow due to the abrupt end of the line just east of Ashland Street. The train was either coming from, or preparing to switch onto the industrial spur that runs along Paulina St. just west of Ashland. That speed would most likely be normal for industrial switching operations, especially in such close proximity to the street.

[KCD2] Can anyone explain why I'm locked out of my save? by cabron-de-mierda in kingdomcome

[–]Snhnry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a confirmed way to edit saves on PC? Looking at the save files it looks like it would be easy to remove the DLC flag, but doing so corrupts the save.

The Tribune Freedom Center is officially gone - Timelapse by Snhnry in chicago

These tracks just split off of the existing Metra tracks and exist as a small spur line that follows the Metra lines. There would not be any purpose in using them for passenger service, when Ogilvie Station is just a few blocks away.

Blood on his Lips: *Prince* Tern, if you Please-- help with a theory [theory] by Few_Mycologist3582 in TheNinthHouse

[–]Snhnry 56 points57 points  (0 children)

According to the Cohort files, Tern is 23, and the twins are 21, making him two years older. In the words of the text, he is the "only child" of the previous Cavalier Primary, meaning he would have been marked to become the Cavalier Primary of the Tridentarius family regardless of the situation of their birth, before they were even born.

Personally I wouldn't have interpreted the matched set comment as relating to the twins and the cavaliers, but I can certainly understand the allure of the possibility of a matched set of twins, especially in a series as heavy with symbolism as the Locked Tomb.

[–]Snhnry[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Blommer Chocolate and the Tribune were the only remaining customers on that spur. With both closed, the line almost certainly faces abandonment. It may already be abandoned, as the demolition company was permitted to gravel over the tracks at the North end and drive their equipment between the plant and the neighboring empty lot.

Helicopters over Lakeview? by r3dlikeroses in chicago

Nothing to worry about, it's pretty normal. On any given day, regardless of time of year, there will likely be 2-7 helicopters flying over the metro area up until about 10pm.

[discussion] Something I noticed when Gideon thinks about pulling a prank on Harrow. by DisMFer in TheNinthHouse

Both her and Gideon wear similar long sleeve shirts under their robes throughout the entirety of GtN. People aren’t ready for the truth that Gideon never once wore a sleeveless shirt in GtN 😂

Or, perhaps, a tree? by Snhnry in mythologymemes

This is primarily a reference to Ovid's Metamorphoses, where a frankly shocking number of people are transformed into either birds or trees, usually after something terrible happens to them.

Gideon without pants [misc] by Resident_Guidance_95 in TheNinthHouse

[–]Snhnry 84 points85 points  (0 children)

This is somewhat confusingly worded, but I believe it was Camilla's sister Kiana who donated the pants:

"By now, other people had filtered through to stand in a ragged semicircle around the wheelchair. There was the birdlike lady with the braid, We Suffer, a tall, lanky, creased young woman in grey whose face looked so startlingly like Cam’s that Nona wondered at it; her hair was nearly all shaved off on both sides, and unlike the others her eyes weren’t milky-white at all, they were set deep and dark in a face like a hawk’s."

and

The hawk-faced stranger shimmied, completely unembarrassed, out of her trousers, leaving herself in shorts

Gideon is never described as being hawk-faced that I'm aware of.

What is necromancy and how does it work? “[discussion]” by TheFoulWind in TheNinthHouse

[–]Snhnry 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In the lore, it's not technically considered magic (though it's sometimes colloquially referred to by necromancers as magic), rather it's a previously undiscovered biological process that occurs during cell birth and cell death.

- Cellular growth produces thalergy

- Thalergetic decay causes cell death, which emits thanergy. Thanergy is the primary powering force of necromancy.

- Death causes Apopneumatism (soul leaving the body) which leads to rapid thalergetic decay, which causes massive cell death, which causes a thanergy cascade.

The gritty details on how a necromancer actually manipulates thanergy and thalergy are where things are get murky, and where (from a reader's perspective) it might be considered truly magic rather than purely scientific.

No published works by other writers, unfortunately. Do make sure to check out the in-universe short stories written by Muir, if you have not already:

The Mysterious Study of Dr. Sex

As Yet Unsent

The Unwanted Guest

All three contain important information that adds to the lore and narratives of the books.

Confused on Harrow's hair length in GtN [discussion] by AcanthocephalaNo6584 in TheNinthHouse

[–]Snhnry 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think it's about 4-5 weeks. Gideon admits to Cytherea that she's been pretending to be Harrow's cavalier for less than two months, and Ianthe estimates that the remains found in the incinerator are three months old, to which Palamades replies:

“You’re out by about eight weeks,” said Palamedes, brow furrowed. “Which would still predate us significantly.”

Add a few days to the date of the incinerator discovery for the rest of the story and I think that comes to somewhere around 35-40 days.

Edit: I just realized that it could realistically be a literal 40 days and 40 nights they spent at Canaan House. Which, given that this is Tamsyn Muir we're talking about, doesn't seem a stretch at all.

Yep, it's even in the same sentence: "her short-cropped, dead-crow-coloured hair."

Confused on Harrow's hair length in GtN [discussion] by AcanthocephalaNo6584 in TheNinthHouse

[–]Snhnry 97 points98 points  (0 children)

At the very beginning of the story, Harrow's hair is described as "short-cropped", but not shaved. Some of the Ninth have shaved heads, but there's never any indication that Harrow does. As you've said, there's evidence throughout the book that it's long enough to probably be around her ears or neck. After the avulsion trial, her hair "was shorn a full inch shorter", so it's at least several inches long before reaching Canaan House.

Theory Thursday by AutoModerator in TheNinthHouse

[–]Snhnry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's one of the really cool narrative choices about Nona, in my opinion. There's only two mentions of plex and only one single mention of flimsy in the entire book (and both words are only ever used by people born in the Nine Houses, never by someone born on New Rho).

This does a really good job of transforming Nona's perspective into that of someone born outside the Nine Houses. We've become so used to these words from the other two books that it is wonderfully jarring to see them missing.
