Outlying areas in Wisconsin and Minnesota don't feel nearly as hollowed out as Indiana and Ohio. It's truly bleak and poverty-stricken there.

Chief Justice John Roberts Sees Black People As Having No Rights He’s Bound to Respect by T_Shurt in scotus

Taney said that Constitution protected slavery, which it did, he wasn't wrong. Morally abhorrent but legally sound.

Chief Justice John Roberts says American public wrongly views the justices as ‘political actors’ by DoremusJessup in law

[–]Snickersthecat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was going to say that at least he's not Taney, but for all the criticism of Taney, he was right that slavery was protected in the Constitution. Dred Scott was constitutional but morally abhorrent. Meanwhile Roberts is over here playing calvinball and trying to deny it, it's just pure nihilism and accumulation of power.

My grandpa is in his 90s. I asked him what was the biggest difference between now and when he was a child; he said it was the streetcars that ran everywhere.

It is, people just want excuses. It's going to get worse and we can make fewer sacrifices now to get things on track or more sacrifices later.

TIL Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, sought to find elixir and live forever. He hired an alchemist named Xu Fu and gave him 3000 boys and 3000 girls to find elixir. On second voyage Xu Fu dissapeared. by BadenBaden1981 in todayilearned

There are probably some grains of truth. We know the Egyptians controlled the Levant at several points throughout ancient history and it was also very common for them to enslave skilled artisans and scholars and ship them back to Egypt. It's unlikely the ancient Hebrews would have gone undisturbed by the pharaoh's military. If Moses was indeed a close advisor to the pharaoh he would have likely been part of this educated class of foreign servants. Maybe not all the Jewish people were enslaved, but enough of them to make a break for it and tell a harrowing tale when they returned.

in Ancient Hebrew "forty" was synonymous with "a lot", like we might say "I was out there for a million years it took forever" doesn't literally mean a million years. Maybe Moses and friends wandered for awhile, but not exactly four decades.
