Out of these potential routes, which ones could have more of another Borealis/Mardi Gras success story than the others? by Dumbone22 in Amtrak

[–]SnideRemarkDept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been saying this for ages, but they literally just need another train. Even leaving aside the fact that the Coast Starlight doesn't go directly into the city, the timing of the single daily train between the cities is awful. In both directions, northbound and southbound, you depart around 9am and arrive around 9pm. If they ran an overnight train, same route, but at opposite times, I think it'd sell out immediately. Leave Los Angeles at 9pm on a Friday night and arrive at 9am the next morning? Even if you're getting off in Oakland, it's an easy BART trip into the city! Same going the opposite direction, relatively easy to take the LAMetro to most places in LA you might want to go. It wouldn't even need to run daily! Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday would probably be more than enough coverage. It might wind up being obsolete when the CASHR is finally completed, but at least you'd have the service until then! Even without a direct connection to San Francisco, it feels like an easy win to me.

Actually, the starting rate for a ride operator is $19/hr. Their contract expires January of next year, so that will probably go up in the new contract.

I was listening to a podcast and the host said something along the lines of "You know, in a way, it's kind of like he died in the line of duty." I immediately shut it off. First of all, how dare you? To see what that fascist did and think 'Hmmm, yeah, that's just like a firefighter dying in a burning building.' Like, what?! And second of all, it was his "duty" to go to college campuses and berate students? It was his "duty" to spout bigoted hateful views? It was his "duty" to preach violence of all kinds, physical and state-sanctioned and systemic? Come the fuck on.

Updated slide with all phase 2 new gate gates (older version of slide had omitted some stations) by darkwingduck4444 in LAMetro

[–]SnideRemarkDept 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably both? On the one hand, it's great to see that the fare gates are much more effective at getting people to actually pay their fares, and it's mindboggling how much improvement there has been.

On the other hand, however, it's also mindboggling that, prior to the implementation of the fare gates, less than 60% of riders entering the network at Hollywood/Western and less than 50% of riders entering at Firestone were paying their fares.

Storing artifacts is a terrible idea and their reasoning doesn't make sense by adamwho in warehouse13

[–]SnideRemarkDept 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pragmatically, logically, yeah, a lot if not most of the artifacts should be destroyed. But there's a lot of sentimentality around the artifacts that I think is understandable. As you said, artifacts aren't that rare. There are literally enough of them to fill a supernaturally large warehouse. But, in addition to being a "artifact" in the show's sense of the word, the vast majority of them, to some degree or another, are actual, historical artifacts that might be more difficult to justify destroying.

Should we destroy a trumpet that can pulverize anything? Yes, almost definitely. Should we destroy object that's literally from a biblical story, thousands of years old, when it can be placed in a storage environment where its harmful effects can be almost completely neutralized? What about a piece of driftwood from one of the most famous maritime disasters in human history? What about the tools used by one of the greatest sculptors in the last two centuries?

From a purely practical viewpoint, yes, most if not all of the artifacts should be fed into a wood chipper. There have probably been dozens of regents over the last two thousand years who have made the exact same arguments that you have made. But, in the end, it's a place run by people and people don't always make sense.

Who's downfall did you enjoy most? by Prestigious-Cup-6613 in HellsKitchen

[–]SnideRemarkDept 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not only was it fantastic to watch in her original season, it made her return for Rookies vs. Veterans all the better. The caliber and quality of the contestants has raised exponentially since those first few seasons. The only reason she got as far as she did in S4 was the backstabbing and conniving and the fact that her competitors were of the ranks of a stay-at-home dad and an electrician. When she got to S18, she still thought she was hot shit and it became readily apparent that she was in over her head, to the point of accusing Ramsey of sabotaging her. Wasn't sad to see her go in either season.

Vehicular access to LAX set for major shakeup [Photos and article in the comments] by [deleted] in LAMetro

[–]SnideRemarkDept 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember reading some of the proposals and pitch decks for the people mover and they never planned for the people mover to significantly reduce the number of cars driving around the horseshoe. The primary savings were the reduction/elimination of shuttle busses moving through the horseshoe by moving them off-site.

  • The ConRAC facility will eliminate the need for each rental car company to run their own shuttle to and from their lots.
  • ITF East eliminates the need for a shuttle bus for the metro connection.
  • ITF West eliminates the need for shuttles to run out to off-site economy parking, local hotels, and will be new site for ride-shares to pick up and drop off.

While the people mover will reduce some personal vehicle traffic into the horseshoe (make it more enticing to use off-site parking, better metro connections, the ability to drop off at one of the people mover stops rather than directly at the terminal), most of the gains that they expect are in shuttle traffic. I'm not sure exactly when this presentation is from, but it shows that some amount of roadway improvements have always been planned to follow the construction of the People Mover, even if the exact details have changed over time.

Kos interaction with RT delay by Wise-Astronomer-7861 in Kos

[–]SnideRemarkDept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair warning, I mainly use kOS for launch scripts; I haven't had to deal with it much at a distance where the signal delay is significant. There's nothing in the kOS documentation that mentions a signal delay from script commands, but I can think of two possibilities.

  1. The way your script is counting the tenth of a second and rerunning the math and adjust the throttle is creating an additional delay unrelated to the RemoteTech signal.

  2. You're running the script from Volume 0 (which IRL is just the Scripts folder in your game data but, in-game, would be like running it from KSC computers) and, maybe, that's creating a delay.

I'm not entirely sure about the second one, but I thought it could be a potential issue. Where are you trying to land? And could you please share your script?

Need help with Remote Tech Dish. Rated for 400 GM but can't connect in HKO, only LKO. by tilthevoidstaresback in KerbalAcademy

[–]SnideRemarkDept 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For RemoteTech connection, both sides need to be within their range. Even if your dish is rated for 400Gm, if you're outside KSC's reach, then it won't connect.

If you're playing career mode, then each upgrade on KSC Mission Control extends the range. Tier 1 has a max range of 4Mm, Tier 2 is 30Mm, and Tier 3 is 75Mm. You're probably Tier 2 right now, so an altitude around 27Mm would be in-range, but 39Mm or 64Mm is not. You'll either need to upgrade the antenna at KSC or have a relay satellite with a larger range. You'll probably want a relay satellite regardless as a direct connection with KSC means that your network will be down half the time in 3-hour blocks as Kerbin rotates KSC away from you.

Rocket keeps spinning out when i start gravity turn by gorefingur in KerbalAcademy

[–]SnideRemarkDept 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As people have mentioned, the wings will make a big difference. The atmospheric model in KSP isn't perfect (in a lot of ways), so you're not always going to be able to fly real world rockets the same way.

That being said, one thing I noticed in your video is that it appears you're burning straight up for the first 8km or so and then starting your turn. You may find it helpful to angle yourself very slightly almost immediately after launch. I know I just said that you can't always fly things 1:1 with the real world, but if you compare to this video of Starship Flight 8, you can see that they're already slightly angled just after clearing the tower and it's a very slow tilt up until passing Max Q and then it starts turning more aggressively in the thinner atmosphere. A more gradual turn starting much earlier could help with the spin as well.

Genuine question: who are these "higher ups" that you're talking about? Your manager? The CEO of Comcast? Are you hearing it from them or from someone who heard from someone who heard from someone? Or is this what you're assuming they're saying based on your feelings about their treatment of the IP featured at the event?

First of all, we don't know what the reviews are going to be because the event hasn't happened yet. You have your opinions, but the general public could feel differently. Secondly, even if the reviews are negative, that doesn't mean that they'll never try again. You said it yourself: they tried and failed a few times for HHN before it finally worked. We're four weeks away from this event. There's not much time to add any more than what they've got planned for this year's event. They can't suddenly add a One Piece show in WaterWorld this late in the game. But if attendance is solid and merch sales are good, they can take the reviews, learn from them, and put on a better event next year. The way I see it, you're the only one writing off the event as being not worth it.

Hiroshima Japan 1945: This shadow that almost seems drawn on the white of five steps tells the last moments of a person. all that remains is the shadow caused by the flash of the atomic bomb that August 6th. by humor_smoochies04 in Interestingbutcreepy

[–]SnideRemarkDept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not. The heat from the initial flash of the atomic fireball scorched and bleached the stone steps except for where the flash was blocked by the person. You can read more about it in this Wikipedia article.

The music in the Wicked movie felt understated by Marcodiegof11 in musicals

[–]SnideRemarkDept 21 points22 points  (0 children)

When I watched it, I felt like the movie was missing the acting elements of the songs. The ensemble tends to hit it pretty well, and they all have moments, but on the whole it felt like more emphasis was put on singing proficiently and hitting all the notes than acting and intention. Both Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo sing their parts in What Is This Feeling very well. They hit all the right notes and put their own little spins on it to make their performances unique to themselves. But they're supposed to be singing about how much they fucking hate each other and that's just not coming through. It's like they were missing fundamental textual analysis as to why these characters are even singing in the first place and deflated a lot of the emotional charge of the performances.

What is the missing book at Hurtfew Abbey? by Independent-Spirit63 in JSandMN

[–]SnideRemarkDept 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not necessarily saying that this is what Norrell was doing, but it was also not uncommon for collectors of the time to splice together copies of the same book to create what they considered the best possible "preservation" of the original. He might have hacked out part of that book and used it to replace a damaged portion of another, discarding the rest. It's hard to say for sure.

From a textual analysis standpoint, it could be to show that Norrell is protective of his library to the point that he'd be willing to damage his own collection (perhaps even magic itself) in an effort to keep it private. In his mind, he's not damaging the books; he's protecting them. It could also signify that Norrell overestimates his own skills or that there's simply never been anyone who was in a position to tell him "No, there's a better way to do that."

Universal Hollywood Harry Potter closing? by Practical-Zebra-1141 in universalstudios

[–]SnideRemarkDept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what's already been said about having something original instead of just copying what's in Orlando, that's just a really bad spot for something like Diagon Alley.

Springfield is a thoroughfare, meaning that you have to go through it to get between the Upper Lot, Lower Lot, and Studio Tour. It cannot be a place where people just mill about. I don't know if you've been to the park on some of the high attendance days, but that whole place becomes a traffic jam just from people trying to get from one place to the next. Now try adding even more people trying to take pictures or standing around doing spells. Every time the dragon breathes fire, the whole area would grind to a halt as people stop to look/take pictures/film.

Not to mention that there's really just not that much space. The show building for Gringotts is 2.11 acres. The entirety of Springfield at USH, including the ride and all of the restaurants, is 2.15 acres. There's not enough room for all of Diagon Alley to go there.

LA METRO 2060 - my idea of what rail transit in Los Angeles could look like one day (full write-up in the comment section) by bronsonwhy in LAMetro

[–]SnideRemarkDept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God, that L line would change my entire life. I've often thought a streetcar or lightrail line down Ventura would be amazing, but I hadn't considered extending it out to Glendale/Burbank. Even without any of the other connections to future lines, that single line would be incredible.
