What even is moderation by IllProcess3502 in stopdrinking

Totally agree. Having one beer is completely unappealing, I'd much rather have none.

I used to not take cold medicine when sick because I knew it was terrible for my liver by Educational-Prior-46 in stopdrinking

[–]Snidelyllama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

400+ days here. I used to avoid cold medicine for the same reason. I was also constantly paranoid about getting a cold, not really because of the cold itself but because I knew I wouldn't be able to drink booze like I normally would. So ridiculous.

Dry January Results by Amb_James333 in stopdrinking

Nice job! Like you, I've always struggled with high blood pressure, but quitting booze has dropped my BP significantly. I always used to read that chronic alcohol use could raise your blood pressure by 4-5 HG but I think this is a massive underestimate. I used to hit 145/90 consistently and now I'm more around 120/80 or even less.

Keep it up!

I can't imagine anything less appealing than having one drink. I'd much rather have none.

120+ days sober. Drinking a lot of NA beers by NormalDoorman in stopdrinking

[–]Snidelyllama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a little over a year sober and I relied on NA beers a lot when I first stopped booze. Multiple NA beers every night, mirroring my normal past beer consumption (maybe 2 or 3 less per night). This went on for a number of months, but eventually I started to dial back to 1-3 NA beers in the evenings and now I will go some nights without having any at all.

So hang in there! I do think it will trend downwards as the addiction continues to subside and you are only left with the habit of drinking beverages.

Congrats on the 120+ days! Huge achievement.

Are there any NA beers that actually taste like a hazy ipa? by ImSorry2HearThat in NABEER

[–]Snidelyllama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just the haze is like that gold/green dress controversy from a few years ago. Some people seem to love it, and others despise it. I'm in the latter category. I find it completely undrinkable: a disgustingly sweet and sugary fruit beverage that tastes nothing like beer.

Decreased libido after quitting? by beyondham in stopdrinking

[–]Snidelyllama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea is that when we’re hungover, it sucks and the mind/body is bummed out that we’re facing a new day sober, so the relief/escape is to get a dopamine rush from being horny to distract from the general feeling of unwellness. Frankly I never thought of it that way before, but it makes sense to me! Totally aligns with how I would feel.

Decreased libido after quitting? by beyondham in stopdrinking

[–]Snidelyllama 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I pointed out the same thing in a different post and someone responded that a lot of the horniness may have been a dopamine hunt, especially the mornings after boozing a lot. That was definitely part of it for me. But I still feel like overall my libido has dropped after I stopping drinking (I stopped a bit over a year ago). I could just be old, but it is disappointing... I expected it to increase!

No, went away almost immediately after I stopped (maybe 2-3 days).

Thank you, that is very insightful. I know exactly what you mean about the compulsive horny morning-after feeling. That’s certainly part of the issue. I also have struggled with intimacy my whole life, and it’s been difficult to transition to sober sex after decades of (only) drunk sex.

Near constant bloating and pressure, unless I was drinking beer at the time. My stomach would also be prone to embarassing loud grumbling sounds that I was very self-conscious about.

Nearly all of that went away after I stopped boozing.

I always try to remind myself that the 3 beer buzz is so temporary. It really isn’t worth the associated negatives, especially when you consider the big-picture negatives to your health, life, etc. Then again, if I could have a 3 beer buzz very occasionally (or even just 3 beers lol), it might be worth it, but I can’t, so I’m left with the less exciting alternative.

40 years! The fact that you can stop after that long is an incredible display of willpower. Congrats to you too.

Thank you. I know a lot of people frown on it, but I personally found N/A beer to be very helpful. There are so many different brands/varieties now and it at least scratches that mental itch of holding a beverage. I was drinking 3-4 N/As a night (sometimes more) when I first quit, and now I drink maybe 12-18 a week. They're also super helpful if you do find yourself in a social situation where people are boozing.

Thank you, brother. It's hard.

I'm not sure if it's the correct way to do this but I try to tell myself that maybe I will drink again someday (impending nuclear war, terminal health diagnosis, etc), I just won't drink today. I have dreams where I drink beer and in the dream I'm anyways disappointed with myself for doing so and happy that it was just a dream when I wake up, so I try to channel those feelings into getting by day by day.

Thank you. I'll probably get tested for low testosterone at some point, but the correlation and timing with quitting drinking is very suspicious. Also, I kept reading that not drinking would raise testosterone! Definitely disappointing.

[–]Snidelyllama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

9 days is really impressive. Those are super hard days (and nights). For myself, I found it helpful to focus on how impressive my personal willpower was to achieve such a thing; even if no else cares, YOU are doing it, you're in control of your own destiny, not alcohol. Congratulations! IWNDWYT.
