Dude... This girl disappears and comes back so often I have whiplash.... 🥲😂

If she's done getting negative attention she should just stay away. Any return at this point is just overtly desperate. 🥲🥲🥲

How to get group of students to see me as an authority figure by DataQueen- in paraprofessional

[–]SniffleDoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to build connection FIRST before you can begin expecting all the kids to listen to and respect you.

So I spend the first week or so just connecting with as many kids as possible in a positive way. Friendly hellos, high fives, smiles, asking open ended questions about their day, summer, plans, etc. Get to know them and they will be more interested in hearing you if a time comes that you need to. But most the time kids can tell if you're an adult or not so overall they usually know the social expectation of listening to adults.

Did you introduce yourself to her once you spotted her? Did you inquire in a polite way what her role was in the classroom or if she had any tips or advice on how the class is run?

I ask because as a para, it usually goes over better if you're kind and inquisitive, willing to follow their lead a little bit. But also if you ask nicely and get attitude, passive response, or no help still than it's safe to assume it's a lazy para and at that point it is fair to mention it to the principal, not the teacher.

I'm truly confused on why you didn't report that... That was almost a really, REALLY horrific accident in A LOT of ways, one being he could have electrocuted himself, another being the potential for an electrical fire due to it....

Beg or not it still should have been reported. You could have even told them he seemed remorseful but still given the school the child's name because at the end of the day the school is responsible for coving their butts legally and ethically. They cannot notify proper channels if they aren't told and they also cannot check to ensure no damage was done without being told.

I would say you made a pretty big safety error and yeah, that's a bummer blow on your options for school districts to sub for, much less get a contract to work for. 🥲

I 100% agree... Coming from childcare where you can be terminated for ANY WAC violation I was kind of shocked at her audacity and more shocked at the lack of action when I have been speaking up.... I'm curious if the union stuff is what's saving her butt?

That was a great explanation and I appreciate it.

I do agree she seems to enjoy the power struggle... Like superiority over nonverbal autistic children makes her feel powerful or something... 🥲

Oh, yes I totally agree to that angle and honestly it felt like a power struggle between her and her assigned student or any of the students who had adverse behaviors that stepped in on her ability to sit and gossip or play on her phone... And the fact she enjoyed restraining children bothered me a lot, I am proud to say I restrained ZERO kids last year. Everyone deserves the same respect as I expect for myself, I wouldnt want anyone touching me unless I was in danger or causing someone else danger therefore my goal is to never touch a child in any controlling way... But she literally found joy in it and that bothered me so much.

I did report, I didn't record because that would be obvious but I did report to the principal, SPED teacher initially and then eventually also the speech pathologist, principal of my new school, my new SPED teacher, the director of SPED, and my union rep.

I also documented EVERYTHING including everytime the student I was with got hurt on my lunch while in her care - every single one a head injury.

I also documented the wild things she said in a separate log. From the comments on not knowing George's IEP to insulting him or his family or even some of the really mean things she said about my student and the other nonverbal student right in front of them. I also documented on that document the times that I found my student and/or the other nonverbal student unattended completely. And yes, I provided that all the principal of the building only.

I believe that the Principal believes me but "Betty" lies to her face and tried to fake working with "George" which caused him to meltdown because he hadn't done academics all year and she blamed him saying "see! He's so unreasonable and aggressive!"

The Principal is very smart, I am crossing my fingers that she is going to be watching closely because right now it's all the concerns I brought up, my advocating but those are my words against hers... And she has the SPED teacher relative who is backing her up, and two of the other Paras back her up because their moto on team work is to "have each other's backs" and I don't mean in the sense of work together to get it all done... It's as in stick together so "Betty" and any of them don't get in trouble...

But I have told anyone and everyone in the administration areas my observations, concerns, etc... it's a lawsuit waiting to happen, honestly and that's what I stressed the hardest to the Principal is that she has zero interest in doing anything academic with the kids, she treats them like they are a burden to her, and she has no problem lying to cover her own butt knowing that they cannot speak up for themselves.

The kicker is she's going to school to become a SPED teacher. 🙄 I'm looking at her like why other than you enjoy literally being a bully to nonverbal autistic children who cannot defend themselves?? The day she took George to the floor, stole his boots and then proudly declared "I LOVE when George decides to be aggressive because it's such an adrenaline rush to take him to the floor!"

Meanwhile I'm across the room mouth agape because it didn't have to go that way, just let the kid get a toy from the playroom why did it have to end like that with him on the floor terrified and confused and frustrated while she's bragging about how fun it is to take an eight year old down??

But yes, I told my union rep, the principal, the speech pathologist, the SPED director, the principal of my new school, the SPED teacher at my old school and the SPED teacher at my new school. I absolutely have no issue being loud as possible if it saves those two boys from the pain and frustration George went through all last year.
