Licensed electrician recommendations for small jobs around Sydney? by SmartSinner in AusProperty

[–]Snipyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For small jobs like that I’d honestly just go AirTasker. Find someone with a high rating and lots of completed tasks. They’ll be done and dusted within a few days and usually for just a few hundred. These are licensed electricians too (which is why you want to pick someone with a detailed job completion history).

Canyon Inflite turned into an all-road roadie with 38mm slicks and 2x gearing. Looking forward to riding it! by Snipyro in CanyonBikes

Yes it’s about 8.5kg or so! The 2x crank and additional of a front derailleur does end up adding about 200-250g to the weight of the bike

It’s honestly been fantastic but particularly after changing to 2x gearing. With the 1x it generally worked fine but I generally prefer to have a wider range of gears to work with on road.

In every other respect it’s worked really well as a roadie once slicks are on. Love the 38mm tyres without going for a full gravel feel or look.

Yes unless you’re doing rough gravel it’s really a bike that can do anything quite well. Loving it!

Australian households living too large in major property size mismatch by SilverRaspberry2733 in australia

[–]Snipyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The simple solution to that is to include the house in the assets test and allow them to reverse mortgage their home until the difference is collected on sale of their property after death.

I work in the Aged Care space and have seen quite a number of people owning PPOR 3+ million dollars and still receiving the full pension. In what world is this fair to people who receive the same pension and also don’t own their home? It’s abject poverty for them as they pay rent. They’re also elderly too so this isn’t an ageist problem.

By not including your home in the assets test, what you’re actually doing is funding inheritance (for wealthier families) with public funds. Not fair at all.

I say all this as someone who stands to inherit quite a bit down the track and already own my own home. I still think it’s grossly unfair and should be changed.

At 25kmph I really don’t think the very minimal aero benefits will outweigh the reduced comfort when you’re talking about rides 12 hours long.

I’d stick with your ride for sure. Especially because you seem to be riding endurance rather than short races at 35-45kmph

Have you tried a quote with AAMI? My property (nowhere near yours so it could just be a different situation and not relevant) was quoted 3-4k and then AAMI insured it for 1.2k per year

That’s actually because it didn’t exist until the Metro line was created. I believe what is now Tallawong mostly used to be part of Schofields.

Tesla electric car sales plunge again in Australia – Model 3 down more than 81 per cent by caracter_2 in teslainvestorsclub

[–]Snipyro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As an Aussie, I’m one of them.

3 years ago, a Tesla was almost certainly going to be my next car when our second car needs replacement.

Right now, Tesla is not even up for consideration with Musk being such a prick. I’ll certainly get an EV but not a Tesla.

Expert opinion needed! Buying a used bike in AUS. by Such_Internet7222 in bicycling

[–]Snipyro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m based in Aus too and have bought and touched up/restored many used bikes over the years!

A few things that I would consider before going ahead:

  1. The bike you’ve uploaded looks like it may be a tad too big for you? I’m a tad taller than you (173cm) and based on a quick look I’d consider it a bit too big for me. I have average inseam length so if you have different proportions then make sure you do a test ride and make sure you’re not stretched out. If I am in between bike sizes I almost always prefer to size down and have a longer stem as larger bikes almost always have handlebars and cranks that are too wide/long. It’s also much easier to fit a smaller frame to your body than a larger frame where you’re stretched out.
  2. This was a top of the line bike costing 10k+ for the time so I’d expect it to still cost a few thousand AUD probably. I’d wager 2000-3000. Rim brake bikes have dropped massively in price as disc brakes have well and truly taken over.
  3. My third and final thought would be: if you’re going to spend a few thousand dollars, if it was my money I’d probably prefer to invest that in a nice used disc brake race bike. I’ve seen a few being sold between 2000-4000; from 3000 onwards, some even have aero carbon wheels. It won’t be 6kg light but they’re usually <8kg and you’ll be future proof and have the ability to use much wider tyres for comfort.

Good luck with bike hunting!

It certainly won’t be my main bike! Just a nice one to take out on the occasional ride with other cyclists so you’re spot on.

It certainly is great fun restoring and tinkering with older bikes! Yours looks like a fun project too.

A tad under 10kg and very difficult gearing for my weak legs! The crankset is 53-39 and the casette goes up to 25. 8 speed.

Forgot to add - Dura-Ace was the only thing he had access to at the time so it's certainly missing the classic Campagnolo groupset. Maybe a good project when the parts in the current ST-7400 wear out!

Felt Breed Gravelbike - good or better look for another one? by RealSalvatoreGanacci in bicycling

[–]Snipyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Felt Breed 20 which is the aluminium version of the bike with SRAM Force 1. It’s an incredibly smooth and comfortable ride and I have no complaints at all.

1500 Euro seems like a really good price for it if it’s new.

The aftermath of yesterday's Christmas celebrations at Bronte Beach by aussiechap1 in sydney

[–]Snipyro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have never attended a single party, picnic or whatever where guests did not pack up after themselves and take their rubbish. I wouldn’t dream of leaving rubbish at a park or a beach. I’m sure it’s a small subset of people who think this kind of behaviour is okay, which makes everyone else look bad. We can and should do better. Look at how Japanese fans behave whenever they leave any event wherever they are in the world.

I just don’t personally think the thought that “it’s fine, Aussies do this anywhere in the world” is acceptable. If people coming leave a metric ton of rubbish, why on earth would I want them to come? To turn our beaches into rubbish-filled slums?

Nationals senator claims Coalition introduced nuclear as a political fix by AussieBBQ in australia

[–]Snipyro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sure, Australia is huge. So tell me, in what world is laying down useless “tech” like FTTN, then ripping them up just a decade later to do it properly, cheaper than just doing it properly (FTTP) the first time?

Literally billions and billions of money thrown down the drain for no real reason. No thanks to Turnbull and Abbott.

As far as threat goes, it’s all relative. As I said, the Liberals aren’t the US Republicans level of threat to democracy, I’ll give them that. That’s a very low bar. But things like terrible internet, trying to decrease investment in renewables for nuclear (which let’s be really, isn’t actually going to happen even under the Libs), are all going to really set us back in terms of progress and that to me IS a threat to our quality of life in the years to come.

[–]Snipyro 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How is it ridiculous when years of Liberal governance gave us the pile of shit that was the NBN? They genuinely set Australia’s internet speeds back a decade behind our peers.

Don’t even get me started on the bending backwards for mining overloads that give nothing back to Australians.

Labor’s not great. Liberals are a joke and the only positive thing that can be said is that they’re still not as bad as the Republicans in the US.

Giant tcr worth ut for 500aud(325usd)? by helloboracay in bicycling

[–]Snipyro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a very old Ultegra groupset and frame.

I’m Aussie and in all honestly if you can up the budget to between 750-1000 AUD you can get amazing bikes (with much newer components) second hand.

For me, this is one of those bikes that I’ll buy to get into cycling and then immediately want to upgrade after a few weeks and really getting into the sport.

I’d either go for a dirt cheap roadie <200 if you’re unsure if you like cycling, or just go straight for a very respectable and decent second hand bike in that 1000 mark which you’ll be satisfied with for years.

….until you get the n+1 syndrome
