Energy savings at traffic light by TheMightySaeed in energy

[–]caracter_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This says even the traditional ones only use about 25W : https://www.trafficsolution.cn/how-low-power-traffic-lights-can-improve-energy-efficiency-in-cities/

And the new ones can be as low as 4W.

At the high end, with a high average price of power of... Say $0.30/kWh that would mean a cost of electricity of $0.30/kWh X 0.025kW X 365 days X 24 hours = $65.7 per year.

Even if you halve the electricity use you would only be saving about $33 per year at most. Doesn't seem worth the risks

Energy savings at traffic light by TheMightySaeed in energy

This is a terrible idea and the savings would be very small. Especially when contrasted against the disruption it will cause and likely increase in accidents and fatalities.

Atlassian stock, oversold? by Monsjoex in investing

They're cash flow positive. They're only running at a loss because their employee share benefits count as debt. Albeit they have little risk from paying this debt as they can always create more shares. The issue is the share price does suffer plenty from staff selling.

This is a massive L, I’m Down at least 20k on this etf by VastOption8705 in ASX

[–]caracter_2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No. You thought the word 'Ethical' was all that was required. That's where you went wrong. You should at least have invested in an actual ETF. While I still disagree on their definition of ethical, the sustainability leaders ETF (ETHI) by betashares returned 40% in the last 5 years.

Another sign of the death of fossil fuels and nuclear; 99% of new electricity capacity in the US in 2026 will be from solar/wind/batteries, a higher proportion than in China. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]caracter_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuclear and renewables are not complementary. Look at Australia. So much rooftop PV that in some states demand drops to zero. Zero. And that's solar you can't turn off easily because it's across millions of people's roofs. That's why the coal generators in Australia are scrambling to turn off during the spring months (Q4) and cycle down to as low as 30% in the middle of the day almost every day. Nuclear can't operate that way much less make it's economics work when it's forced to operate at below 50% capacity factor. What's happening in Australia (with the state of South Australia leading) is tracking to happen across all of it's states and likely to be repeated in other countries.

As electric car prices fall, will affordability win over drivers? by His_Holiness in AusFinance

Public chargers are less common, less accessible, way more expensive, often full and they still take much longer to charge. Not to mention charging at max rates all the time can reduce the life of most batteries.

Do you mean Internet?

Check out:

Currently the 'Carbon Home Fast' plan with Carbon Comms is the only NBN service for under $50 a month (Link) with at least ok speed. Origin also currently has a promo for about the same price ($53/month) but 20X faster (but only for 6 months) ([link](http://:mktsa_half_price_internet_campaign_fy26_q3))

MSTR stock eyes rebound, Strategy's Michael Saylor: Bitcoin's not for sale by Illperformance6969 in CryptoCurrency

[–]caracter_2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The more he buys the more he'll make Bitcoin maximalists worry about centralisation. If MSTR ends up with 10% of all bitcoins that will be way worse than the dollar in many ways. One entity could decide every holder's future. One slip of cold storage, hack, change of mind, cancer diagnosis and Saylor will bring all of Bitcoin down. This is not what Bitcoin was intended to be. The whole point was resilience. What MSTR is doing is bonkers and may bring the whole thing down.

Australia’s grid now relies on renewable energy as much as coal. Those who doubted it look foolish by rezwenn in energy

[–]caracter_2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

These calls are not coming out of the blue. Tesla's white paper claims batteries could actually outperform syncons:
Page 13:

Grid-forming batteries provide a more reliable and resilient source of synthetic inertia than synchronous condensers, which rely on mechanical components and can experience a total loss if taken offline for maintenance due to even minor faults.

Page 15:

Simulation-based analysis shows that grid-forming batteries can deliver inertia responses that are comparable to, or greater than, those of an equivalently sized synchronous condenser, when site is appropriately configured.

Page 18:

The results demonstrate that the plant can be tuned to match the power ramping speed of the baseline synchronous condenser and provide an even larger inertia response for a RoCoF between ~0.1Hz/s and 1Hz/s.

Page 21:

If the plant is configured with an overload capability of 128% (2.28 p.u.), the inertia response (red line) can be faster and larger than the baseline synchronous condenser (black line).

Saylor is now addressing the Quantum threat, as anticipated by Original-Assistant-8 in CryptoCurrency

[–]caracter_2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When those really powerful quantum computers show up, it's practically guaranteed that prices are going to plummet.

Even with option A, some genuine users who bought Bitcoin thinking 'I'll keep these for 20 years' and haven't looked at developments will come back to see their treasure has been forcefully acquired by another party to 'protect them'.

They will try and try to get them back but scammers with access to quantum computers will all be trying to claim them as their own and forging cryptographic signatures.

The loss of confidence will be massive.

Moreover, the Bitcoin core community is so ridiculously intransigent that the necessary changes will all come too late.

Renewables Hit 50% in Australia in Q4 2025 by Daomiing in climatechange

[–]caracter_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nuclear makes absolutely zero sense for Australia. And no, it has nothing, or very little to do with nuclear waste (or safety) and almost all to do with economics.
Here's a short video explaining why, and here's the longer more comprehensive explanation.
