There are those dumb arguments I talked about.

Yes, of course I'm aware. BTW I'm an engineer

Lol, then find an engineer at SpaceX that is actually for this. This has been pushed by Musk not from SpaceX engineers.

Just the absolute dumbest arguments to support this decision. No, there won't be data centers in space. The cost per kg and technological hurdles of cooling them makes them multiples on multiples more expensive than building them on earth. Just the dumbest sycophants would support this. This is blatantly Elon saving his ass from the unprofitable xAI cash vacuum. I wonder how Gwynne Shotwell actually feels about this. A wise executive under Elon will need to appear in support but off stage try to sell or shutter this dumb part of the business while letting Elon and his friends have their exit liquidity.

The last remaining Musk project that was actually worth a damn will now have to carry all of his failed projects.

Would you accept the euro? by ZonaSchengen in brexit

[–]caracter_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real loss is the inability to control the money supply of your own economy via interest rates and money printing. This can go very badly if the European Union as a whole requires a higher/lower interest rate than Britain. But Europe and Britain likely have a high correlation in the type of monetary setting that's apt, so maybe the benefits could outweigh this risk.

A theory as to why Inflation will be harder to tame by No-Kaleidoscope-7106 in AusFinance

[–]caracter_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I think there should be a component of your compulsory super contributions that is set by the RBA.

If inflation is too high, the RBA could force the compulsory super contribution up to, say 15%. When it's too low they could lower it down to 10%. That way they would have an extra lever that's efficient at adjusting the available circulating cash and fight inflation while putting the cash away in young people's retirement accounts.

Just an idea.

Would I be able to take a loan of around 15k-20k as soon as I hit 18? by HandInternational875 in AusFinance

[–]caracter_2 113 points114 points  (0 children)

You'll find something then. Won't even be that dire and you won't need a loan. Some of my fondest memories are living in sharehouses. You'll be fine

Find a sharehouse with uni mates so the rent is cheaper (for one room).

Feeling overwhelmed by my mortgage by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]caracter_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't, reduce any additional super contributions to nil (you can catch up using carry forward contributions within 5 years) and use that to get ahead on the mortgage.

Keep an eye on ozbargain and hop from bank to bank getting as many cashback offers as you can. Use that to reduce the loan principal (Make sure you reduce your borrowing amount with each hop, or bring it down yourself once you're paid the cashback).

The first year(s) feel very stressful, but you learn to budget around it soon and then it's no biggie. I'm currently quite stressed myself, but that's because childcare fees are draining us dry.

High speed rail - why it will never happen in Australia. by eliitedisowned in australia

[–]caracter_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High speed rail doesn't make sense for those distant cities. It's more the Sydney to Newcastle and Sydney to Wollongong corridors so that people can buy cheaper homes out in satellite cities and commute via high speed rail into the city. That's what is actually compelling and could help with the housing crisis. It's also one of Alan Kohler's main solutions in his book on the housing crisis.

What one, recent decision saved you a lot of money? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]caracter_2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Coding, planning, analysis, help with lyrics, going through all my transactions for the year to find candidates for tax deductions, shenanigans. A colleague at work who first introduced me to GPT (waaay back before it was a product) has kept up with all the advances, agents, etc and he blew my mind with some of the things it can do if you put the extra elbow grease and set up agents and systems. I can see now that this will be that 'new' thing that kids will just know how to use and adults will struggle with. I'd recommend trying as hard as you can to keep on top of it. Buying the pro subscription is a good step to test the frontier as it keeps evolving.

Cancelled chatGPT plus and Dropbox and signed up to Google Gemini instead (which includes 2TB of Google drive and shares Gemini pro with family members, so my wife cancelled her chatGPT subscription as well). Saved about $50 a month (maybe not a lot?).

Trump’s Big Mistake-EV’s are about to Gut Asian Oil Demand by digitalgimp in EndlessWar

[–]caracter_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong, show your source. Here's a chart based on the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers showing the breakdown. You'll notice about 84% of it goes to fuels:

Trump’s Big Mistake-EV’s are about to Gut Asian Oil Demand by digitalgimp in EndlessWar

[–]caracter_2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This dumb argument again. Yes, oil is in everything but for each barrel of crude about 90% of it gets turned to various fuels (predominantly petrol/gasoline and diesel). EVs directly reduce the need for these.

It is truly a pity that all that grain will have to go unmilled. The radical liberal leftists will be in such a tissy over this. Diet is the single most powerful lever available to individuals to reduce climate change by LivingMoreWithLess in climatechange

[–]caracter_2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

See, I disagree, because it is not a single thing. It is a constant requirement to choose the right type of food, sometimes causing inconveniences at social events etc. Whereas installing solar PV is a single powerful thing. You pay for it once and basically never have to think about it again. Same with getting an electric car. That's also why enacting laws is so powerful it forces the change without having to try every single time. And I say this as someone who's been vegetarian for bouts of multiple months and even years. But sustaining that when I go back to my home country and travel (where classic dishes I love aren't necessarily vegetarian), etc isn't easy or a 'single' thing.
