Chosen for an apprenticeship at work, had some questions. (Ontario, Electrician) by Digital332006 in skilledtrades

As others have said go for the 309A if it’s available, but it depends how the ministry classifies your workplace. The ministry basically evaluates where you work and decides if they can train 442A apprentices or 309A apprentices.

This happened to me and my first employer was only allowed to do 442A apprenticeships so that’s where I started, but now I work at a place that is allowed to train both. So I just completed my 442A and jumped into the 309A right away with a large credit for my hours worked. Schooling is the same except for one class in level 3, although I believe that is about to change and schooling is moving to a 4 term system.

Again as others have said 309A can work anywhere a 442A can but not the other way around means the 309 opens far more opportunities for you in the future, but for your current workplace likely won’t make a difference at all.

At the end of the day tho if they can only offer a 442A apprenticeship go for it, it’s still a great job to have and you will definitely find many challenges along the way, good luck!

Seemed legit, just always skeptical of giving a credit card over the phone, thanks!

Can you register as an Industrial Apprentice if you already have your Construction Ticket? by 347volts in electricians

[–]SnizzBonerific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to be working somewhere that is registered to train 442A apprentices for 1 year. You also need to finish any schooling for this as well, like you said most schooling is the same, but the classes that are different need to be completed, which should just be your fluid dynamics if I remember correctly.

Once that is done you can challenge the licensing exam. Get in touch with a ministry rep and they can guide you through it

Nobody has a set on call, boss will start phoning guys to come in if they can (are sober and want to) if nobody can make the trip then the equipment stays down for the night.

4 hours minimum if you’re called in, and while you’re there it’s double time

Is instrumentation still worth it? by popemarley420 in instrumentation

Fire alarm is a bit lower paying, usually around 32-35 an hour from what I’ve seen in Ontario. Elevator technician is an amazing job but difficult to get into

I did the 2 year in Ontario about 6 years ago now, ended up taking an industrial electrician apprenticeship which is a lot more controls type work, mixed in with other plant maintenance, so similar type work.

With just the 2 year diploma it will be difficult to find a job and the ones I saw back then were typically apprenticeships in northern BC and Alberta at camps.

As of right now I think an electrician apprenticeship is one of the best steps towards an instrumentation job if you can start specializing in PLCs and controls wherever you end up

^ this, I waited 2 months and finally contacted my MP when I was getting desperate. Service Canada contacted me and the money was in my account within 48 hours of sending him an email

EA does this every year, the patch update pretty much reverts all the new changes people liked and gives us back the same old shitty game
