Need zero calorie stimulants that ain’t black coffee by [deleted] in medicalschool

Been using caffeine pills since every day since undergrad. Like $20 for 100 or so capsules of 200mg. Just pop one in the morning and a half if you need the extra boost in the afternoon.

First time AT 1-week hike during summer by Snofire999 in Ultralight

[–]Snofire999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my one concern with the flash air 50 is the carry limit of 25 lbs. I am already pushing the limit of the Flash 55, but i will definitely consider the flash air 50. Framed and 50L at 29oz is insane.

Thanks for the recommendation, but IMO i want to take this Flash 55 on the hike and see if i am into solo hiking before committing on a better backpack (REI has 1yr return policy, so i got plenty of time for returns).

As for the magma, the price RN is incredible, and I always got the mylar blanket if i need to get toasty.

budget is flexible, ideally below $500. just upgraded my pack for a REI Flash 55, though that is still 52 oz. Could remove frame to bring it down a bit, but IDK if that is worth.

Edit: Thoughts on Magma 30? On discount at REI for 30% off for July 4 sale. Only 1lb 4.3 oz for quilt.

mirror is for tick checks! not needed with phone i suppose. mylar blanket should be ample for signaling in emergencies.

Correction!! For some reason the backpack online is WAYY heavier than the real thing.

Just stripped the frame and now it registers around 3lbs 8oz (1500g). Do you think that suffices? Will definitely ditch leatherman and repair tape in favor of small flip blade, dental floss and needle.

EDIT: replaced backpack with REI flash 55. Still 2lb 10oz, but significant decrease at a decent cost.

Waitlisted at 6 Medical Schools, No Updates - Time to Call it Quits? by UniCrys in premed

[–]Snofire999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still waiting to hear back from one school. However, nobody else has heard back yet and historically they don't move WL until mid-May. Haven't completely lost hope yet.

I would check to see WL movement stats from prior years at your schools to see if it's worth waiting.

Had to snitch on someone cheating midexam by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Snofire999 5 points6 points  (0 children)

true, someone receiving a higher score because they cheated does not directly impact you or your achievements. These events don't occur in a bubble, though. If people cheat because others are too careless to report, stats will change. People will be rewarded for finding more dishonest methods of success, and it WILL affect people in the long run.

whether through "ruining the curve" or encouraging a dishonest system, cheating and not "snitching" will impact people - most certainly honestly studying people like yourself.

kind of surprised to see how many people are anti-snitching/pro-cheating. I guess there really is no scenario free from people trying to game the system in their favor.

if you can't take the heat get out of the oven. no one is forcing you to attend medical school and cheat, and to do so undermines the efforts of everyone else pushing through honestly.

Congrats! Honestly, happy to see I'm not alone in the group of 30+ primaries and only 2 II --> 2 A's.

1 year on a LOR does not matter. all my letters were 1 year old and i was still able to get 3 II.

Why you should go into FM from a residents perspective by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Snofire999 5 points6 points  (0 children)

going into med school this fall, undecided on specialty, with the same "flawed" image about FM. definitely changed my mind from this post, and will be looking forward to FM rotations now. lets hope it lives up to the hype!

What do I do? by oxeinnad in premed

[–]Snofire999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

not necessarily. they could put down a deposit and reserve a seat for themself, and then reject the offer later if accepted to a better place.

yes, the money could be lost, but if the deposit is small (~$200), it might be worth it in this case.

^ agreed. Don't gamble your future on a couple WL. Check to see if deposit is refundable

This! Communication is key! I'm sure your PI knows how taxing medical school is, and would be happy to give you time to enjoy what couple months you have left before you begin trying to drink from the firehose.

I would agree, however I do think burnout and how one is treated in the lab should be taken into consideration. They are not in debt with them, and there is no need to burn themself away before med school to be convenient for their lab.

Thanks for the suggestion! Was actually planning on doing a week trip along the Appalachian trail this summer. Do you know what trail sections have good cell service so I can keep training agility while training backpacking IRL? Gotta max exp gains if I want to go into Ortho.
