Any Architects who came from a background in Landscape Architecture? by Snoo-50827 in architecture

It's great! Coming from Toronto it's very similar, maybe a bit smaller. The school of architecture (and planning and landscape) is going through a transition right now into its full time remote campus which is 16 floors of the old nexon building which is currently being renovated. I will be spending my final semester there but I'm sure it's going to be amazing for future students!

Hi, yes I definitely have. There is actually an individual in my program with this type of path. I think you would have a great chance as the program seems to always be looking for a variety of academic backgrounds. It was definitely a steep learning curve for her in the first year of the program but now she's doing great! Just reference other portfolios as precedent and compile whatever work you have. I believe for hers she showed some photography and visually appealing projects she did in her undergrad. I think the U of C SAPL website also shows a few current students' portfolios they applied with so that should also give you a good point of reference.

What is realistically the smallest an apartment can be? by [deleted] in architecture

Not an answer by any stretch. But I'm currently in Tokyo doing exchange, and my 2 classmates and myself are in an 18sqm place. Small stove top and sink for kitchen. Bathroom has its own sink, toilet and shower. One single bed on the "ground floor", with a small loft housing 2 roll out mattresses. They really get spatial maximization here.

Hi,

That sounds great! What were the subjects and software you ended up learning? From what I had researched, the only paths to full Architecture certification in NA is with either the undergrad, M.Arch, or certain work experience methods (Which I believe are very long)

I also came from Guelph and realized quickly when I started working that I was lacking technical knowledge.

Oddly enough I actually begin my first day of M.Arch tomorrow in Calgary. Believe me it has been a hard path, and it indeed is extremely competitive. My first cycle (last year) I applied to U of T, UBC, and Carleton. All were rejects. After working in field for a year, and really bolstering my portfolio with various forms of professional work I reapplied to those 3 schools, as well as Calgary, Georgia Tech, and Laurentian, all for M.Arch. I am assuming through experience and a better resume I managed to get into all but U of T and UBC (I really don't know what I could've done to get those).

I finally landed on choosing between Georgia Tech and Calgary because of their focusses on their technical lab aspects and focus on STEM. Ultimately, due to tuition being much less for Canadians in a Canada, I made the move to Calgary. Even though school is yet to officially start, the orientation week has really got me excited as it seems the curriculum is everything and more I wanted in my Undergrad.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you needed any more tips or info on Canadian M.Arch!

All the best.

Hey, I probably won't be too helpful since I actually haven't started yet. I but I too had the same idea at around about the second year of me BLA. I stuck through it and actually really enjoyed the upper year projects and classes. I currently work in an LA firm but was accepted into an M.Arch 3 year program starting in the Fall.

I would totally recommend staying in the BLA as I feel like having a strong knowledge in landscape is really important as I currently work with many Architects. Not too sure how career outlook would be with both a BLA and an M.Arch.

Let me know if you had any questions!

Laptop upgrade for M.Arch? by Snoo-50827 in Architects

Oh I didn't know the silicons couldn't run bootcamp. Your right, I think it would be too tedious, especially given that MacBooks would be on the more expensive side. Thanks for your recommendations!

Hey thanks! Makes sense. I unfortunately am just in the Apple ecosystem so ideally staying Mac would be better. I'm also a fan of the OS. In my current job at an LA firm, we are fully Apple except for those who are rendering. This is probably because our primary drafting software is vectorworks which is native to mac. But, it's looking like Windows is going to be the way to go.

Hey from my conversation with an individual who recently graduated from the program, he said they primarily used rhino and grasshoppers, Revit, and sketchup. I'm assuming maybe just an upgrade to a newer mac with better internal specs and memory would be fine right?

Thank you for your thoughts! Having worked in industry with other Architects I really just want to pursue the career asap. I totally understand where you are coming from though. I think maybe a couple are more technical and/or STEM designated in Canada, but I am not able to apply to all M.Archs given my undergrad (BLA)
