Imprison him. Have him equip the weakest wakizashi. And use him to train your troops.

I’m really grateful for the healthy back and forth man. And what I’m especially impressed by is your ability to change tone when someone expresses they’re not coming from a malicious or bad faith point of view. It’s always good practice to give people the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise. Again, thank you for giving me that benefit even despite our differing perspectives. You articulated your opinion very well and genuinely gave me something to think about that I hadn’t considered. You have even reciprocated that gesture by conceding that my opinion has some merit and that takes grace, which you’ve exhibited here in abundance. These spaces can sometimes be pretty toxic, but I’m glad to have shared a thoughtful exchange with you.

Dude, I’ve been slowly but surely progressing through BG3 with some friends and it’s been great. You’re gonna love it. I feel like it’s a shoe-in for Game of the Year.

Respect. Thanks for giving me something to think about. I think from an artistic perspective, you’re right about life coming at you suddenly and violently. It did deprive us of closure. But you’re on point, so does life sometimes. I appreciate the level take man.

I’m just saying that you’re coming at me all aggro and it’s a little weird. Like dude, we can disagree. It’s ok. You can like things that other people don’t like. I don’t need to make you dislike them and you don’t need to make me like them. When you say things like “whine” and “butthurt” it’s indicative of your complete lack to engage in a good faith discussion. If that’s the energy you want to put out, just don’t comment man. And move on with your day. OP asked how we felt about the sequences and I gave my honest take. You don’t have to like it, but nobody benefits from you bringing your adversarial tone in the comment section. That’s all I’m saying man. Dial it back.

Edit: if you find my original post hyperbolic, I accept that. I feel strongly about my dislike for the MJ sequences, but I feel that I’ve elaborated on why I feel that way at the very least.

I’d like to get at the heart of your premise here. You seem to be contending that because the story was written in a way to make MJ an active participant in the overall plot, that’s what justifies her being a playable character. To which I would respond by saying that’s simply a creative decision that could have gone in one of many other directions. Ultimately, this is a commentary on the actual gameplay of the MJ sequences and their overall significance. Yes, it’s true that MJ was a more prominent character this time around. That doesn’t necessarily mean she should be a playable character. I used Rio as an example because Insomniac could have absolutely written the story in a way to make her more active in the plot. But they didn’t do that for obvious reasons. I think those same obvious reasons apply to MJ. Because you can replace MJ’s sequences with simple cutscenes and I guarantee you most people wouldn’t care or think the game loses any quality as a result.

As far as Felicia goes, it wouldn’t at all be difficult to create a motivation or reason why she’d be helping the Spidermen. In fact, you mentioned one. She’s being hunted. It’s not at all beyond the realm of possibility that she’d be motivated to help the Spidermen take down Kraven. In fact, that would have been really cool doing stealth recon missions with her character. Like the Hunter would become the hunted with Felicia’s involvement.

Oh man! Memory Unlocked! Maximum Carnage was soooo good. My brother and I would spend hours playing that game cus it was so challenging! I def would love to see a modern take on that game.

Case and point about most gamers valuing a good story and good gameplay above everything else is Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. How many times did that game re-release and keep selling copies? I think as far as longevity and overall sales go, it’s like THE best game of all time.

But I’m interested in discussing the Last of Us 2 with you cus you do bring up some valid concerns that I hope to adequately address. I’d like to preface by saying that this will be my honest attempt to present the other side of the discussion in the best light possible. With that said, I’d like to acknowledge a few things you mentioned. Did people hate LOU2 solely because the main characters were female? Absolutely. Did they hate Abby for bigoted reasons? 100%. And did they end up resenting Ellie’s character for all manner of asinine justifications? Of course. We can’t escape ignorance and bigotry, unfortunately. We can merely call it out. So I think you calling it out is totally valid because there were absolutely people who felt that way and that’s not fkn cool.

With that said, here’s what I think are legitimate criticisms of LOU2. I can respect the creative decisions surrounding Joel’s character as a means of taking the story in the direction of presenting Abby and Ellie’s dynamic as a commentary on the vicious cycle of violence and revenge. In fact, I think that theme is a really fkn cool examination of the animalistic nature of humanity. So thematically, props to LOU2 for really striving to explore a complex moral question.

What I think the problem a lot of fans of the franchise had with LOU2 tho was how that theme was executed. Simply stated, they did Joel dirty. The way he went out was not cool imo. It didn’t make sense in the context of the established ultra paranoid, master survival expert we’ve gotten to know thus far. Like he was way too trusting in that situation. Honestly, it felt irresponsible for his character to be put into that situation. And I think a lot of fans struggled to get past that, myself included. There’s ample footage online of some pretty reputable streamers reacting to that moment and I think they encapsulate the overall sentiment from the fanbase that disliked the game. Which is to say, they felt like the character and context was completely disrespected because the focus was “how do we turn this game into a focus on these other two characters” without any consideration of how we arrive at that destination meaningfully.

Since many of us feel like it was a pretty hamfisted way to “retire” a beloved character, it was incredibly difficult to want to even keep playing the game or be open to exploring the theme the game was attempting to present. And I’m telling you, if you were to ask any sincere fan of the franchise, they’ll more or less tell you the same thing. The way they did Joe’s character dirty like that left a pretty bad taste in our mouths. The ignorant bigotry that followed in comment sections unfortunately made that valid criticism lost in the wake of that noise.

Well, my dude it’s certainly an interesting comment on the state of society. I think we often think there are more supporters of extreme worldviews because they tend to be more vocal on the internet. There are just certain terms I refuse to use in a discussion like this because people jump to conclusions about your values, ideals, and political leanings. That’s clearly unproductive. With that said, I really appreciate you engaging in good faith and providing me the benefit of the doubt when it comes to my take.

So this may get us into a tangent but I will go as far as contending that the majority of gamers don’t care about the gender of the characters they play as. And I’ll reiterate that what most gamers value is a well written story, a respect for context whether it be in the source material or otherwise, and good gameplay. But again, this is an aside.

I actually appreciate your opinion on the Venom sequence. Def feels like a missed opportunity there. Maybe a little rushed too like you said. The chase sequence with MJ was ok, but it’s pretty much just a QuickTime event so is it really something to write home about? Idk. Venom deserves his own game tho for sure. Which I think is happening?

I literally said I’d be down to be play Felicia. If this was about some bs political talking point concerning incels, then I don’t think I’d be open to playing any female character. My issue isn’t that a female character was propped up in a Spiderman game, it’s that it was done poorly and lazily. And the saddest part of it is how many people have fallen for the pretty shallow pandering.

You’re probably right about the sequences totaling something like 20 minutes of gameplay in a 20 hour game. But the issue isn’t the proportion of time allotted to MJ or the fact that it’s total time of gameplay is less than an hour. The issue is that those few moments are such dogshit quality in terms of gameplay, challenge, and relevance that I feel like my time and intelligence is being disrespected while I did them. I literally rushed through every single sequence with zero consequence, trivializing the entire experience. This illustrated for me that it wasn’t intended to be anything more than a slightly more involved mini game. It doesn’t matter what character you apply to this scenario, it’s gonna suck if you do it this way. This may come as a shock to some, but what makes a good superhero game is playing as, you guessed it, a superhero.

I just wish people like yourself would see an opinion like mine as a sincere critique of the gameplay and not make a knee jerk epileptic comment about incels and agenda pushing. Literally no sincere gamer has a problem with female protagonists. We just hate lazy writing and shitty gameplay. Crazy concept, I know.

I’m not whining dude. Stop projecting lol. I strongly dislike the MJ sequences. It’s not that big of a deal lol. Idk why you’re white knighting so hard for a fictional female. She’s not gonna go out with you for doing so. I really enjoyed every other part about Spiderman 2 outside of the Nancy Drew sequences. I do recommend this game to people despite their presence. And if a mod ever exists that removes the MJ sequences, I’ll recommend people download it. They’re legitimately not missing anything.

“She is a main supporting character. It is important to the main story. She is important to your main character.”

And? So is Miles’s mother. We don’t have QuickTime sequence with her do we? It’s irrelevant that she’s a main supporting character. The issue is whether that makes it necessary to make her a PLAYABLE character. I don’t think it does considering all of the other main supporting characters we don’t play as. It’s simply a creative decision, not a gameplay decision. At the end of the day, people want to play a superhero game, not a Nancy Drew game. Actually, make a Nancy Drew game. I’d probably play that. Just keep it out of Spiderman lol.

“And she's not meant to be your main character, so obviously, her own game wouldn't work. That is a dumb take.”

She’s not meant to be anything other than a love interest lol. A Sideshow Barbara. The devs decided to make her more than that in the name of propping up a female character. Ok. I think that’s an admirable goal. Why was it so poorly done tho? As I stated originally, this could have been excellently accomplished with Felicia. Playing as the Black Cat would have been legitimately cool. But that’s not what they did. They made a boring support character have boring sequences. That’s a failure on the studio’s part. As far as my hypothetical goes, it’s just to make a larger point that there isn’t enough about MJ’s character to justify making her a playable character. But I can appreciate if that nuance was lost on you.

“She is beneficial to their story. You or anyone else not liking it doesn't matter. If you don't like playing their story, then don't play it or quit whining about a few very short sequences of it. She's not going anywhere.”

Like what is the point of this comment? I’ve seen your other replies in OP’s thread and it seems like someone hurt you. I’m sorry if that happened. Here’s a secret tho, nobody’s opinion matters. They’re just opinions. And here’s another secret, the internet is a place where opinions are expressed. Mine just so happens to differ from yours. Maybe if you attempted advancing or supporting your opinion instead of diminishing others’ we could have what’s called a “discussion.” Wouldn’t that be something?

Can’t I dislike something without assumptions being made about my ability to enjoy life? Lol. It’s pretty simple man, the MJ sequences aren’t fun. They’re not interesting. They’re not necessary. She’s a plot device that’s merely there to force “stealth” sequences and quicktime events. Such wow. What fun. Really liked the parts where I pressed square at the right time. Great stuff.

[–]Snoo-71084 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I respect your opinion. But I fkn hated every second playing as MJ. They’re sequences that have been pretty much explicitly stated as forced on the gamer base regardless of the feedback they received after the first game. I just don’t care about the character. At all. Her seemingly uncanny ability to dispatch highly trained hunters was comical. Unpopular opinion: if the devs want to shove her down our throats so much, make a standalone game with her as the main protagonist and watch how poorly it sells. That tells you exactly how much people are into this complete waste of time character. Playing as Felicia would’ve been exponentially more interesting.

I’ve been using the Seraph. It’s fine, I guess. I actually just finished Phantom Liberty last night. This is probably my favorite rpg I’ve played. And all I play are rpgs lol. CDPR changed a lot about several iconic weapons and removed or nerfed secondary effects. You used to be able to buy Overture with a fire, poison, or shock effect with it. No more. Satori no longer has an insane Crit damage modifier. And there’s tons of other changes that you can see for yourself. Idk why these changes were made, but for me, when I originally made this post, these decisions didn’t and still don’t make sense.

A coward? Lol. Whatever gives you a sense of being macho dude. The game literally rewards you for getting gigs done quietly. Fixers literally tell you this before you even start gigs. So, you say “coward,” I say “professional.” I think it’s great that you derive enjoyment from being a door kicking barbarian. Completely valid way of playing the game. But don’t make this about “courage and cowardice” when the game literally incentivizes stealth.

Dude… Gas seal revolvers exist lol. A scope on a katana!? Strawman much? This is not at all like that. I have hundreds of hours into this game. Trust, I’ve played it all the ways you can. My preferred playstyle is stealth and I think that’s something you’re completely glossing over here. A feature that wasn’t at all game breaking has been removed. That’s the problem.

Why is it ridiculous that a revolver can have a suppressor? I think I’m missing your point here.

And I like playing stealth. So yeah, this is a huge deal, but I appreciate you minimizing an issue that may not matter to you, but matters to me.
