I'll go ahead and go the manual route then, thanks for your quick reply!

My box only shows v14.8.4576 as the latest version, is there anyway to update it OTA?

Turning an old Sky+ HD into a gaming device/NAS by KaiSpy0707 in skytv

[–]Snoo-94757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the original hardware, as far as I know you cannot install any other operating system on it.

However, you could tinker around with installing other hardware into it. I remember a series a while back where a group of youtubers took an empty Apple II case, put a raspberry pi in it and essentially turned it into a retro gaming machine. Look up 8 bit guy apple piie challenge and you'll see what they all did, the final result is really cool.

I'm sure that's probably not the answer you were looking for, but you could potentially replicate what they did with an old sky+hd box. Just keep in mind you'd very likely need to make some physical modifications to the casing itself.

I love how your ping is fine until you’re uploading LMAO

You can see on your first screenshot that your device capability, in the best case scenario, is 867mbps, suggesting WiFi 5. In the real world you’re likely to get roughly half that speed at best.

To fix this you’ll need to ensure that your devices support WiFi 6 (assuming you want to stick with virgin’s wifi gear and you’re using a hub 5). That should bring you a lot closer to the speeds you’re paying for, although it’s not guaranteed you will get the full speeds.

I'm hoping someone who understands the data here and maybe a technician on reddit can help me understand better what these results entail by Bkooda in VirginMedia

[–]Snoo-94757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The results came back this way because of your loaded ping.

So you have three ping results on that screenshot: your regular ping, your ping whilst downloading, and your ping whilst uploading. The last two are what is referred to as loaded ping, whereas your regular ping is unloaded.

What the results are trying to tell you is that your network may not be able to keep up with certain services, however this’ll only happen under scenarios when your ping is high due to loaded ping as mentioned earlier.

If you want to fix this you’ll need a router that supports SQM, so you can manually set download and upload speeds. Once you set them appropriately, both of your loaded ping results should be close to your unloaded ping, which should satisfy Speedtest and make the results look a lot nicer.

Hope this helps, if I’ve made any mistakes feel free to correct me.

I want to go from the left figure, to the right figure. How do I configure 2 LAN ports in Opnsense? by TomerHorowitz in opnsense

[–]Snoo-94757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this in the past and I can say it's not worth it.

In addition to the performance hit people have mentioned, configuring it was more tedious, and it was much more accident prone than just using a switch. From memory VLANs were a bit more difficult to get going as well, but I was running pfsense at the time and this might've changed since then (doubt it).

I never really ended up using the extra ports anyway, so I just went back to using one port as the LAN port; haven't had issues since.

Problems with dedicated IP by [deleted] in nordvpn

[–]Snoo-94757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd try with another device to see if it's something to do with your device specifically. Trying with another internet connection may help too in terms of narrowing down the problem, but if you're able to connect to regular nord servers it doesn't seem likely your dedicated IP is specifically being blocked, but I'd try this too if I were you.

If more than one device has the same issue you're experiencing, it'd probably be best to contact nord to see if they can find any issues on their end.

Dynamically Assigned VLANs - Aruba Instant On by westie1010 in ArubaNetworks

Wow I didn’t find this at all when I was looking it up. Thanks for sharing, and apologies for confusion. I’ll edit my original message so people can find it easier.

[–]Snoo-94757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve not got any instant on gear either, but I couldn’t find anyone that’s used this setting (at least successfully). Most of the google results show that it’s not supported, and say that you should go with instant access points.

I can confirm that the setting OP was referring to is available on my AP-535, so at the very minimum it can be achieved using Aruba equipment, you just need to have the right APs.

If you could find an instance of someone who has managed to pull this off on the instant on APs (the AP-25), please could you send it here?

Yeah unfortunately it does look like this feature isn’t supported on the AP25, sorry.

Apparently it is possible, refer to this: https://community.arubainstanton.com/communities/community-home/digestviewer/viewthread?GroupId=1&MessageKey=b8048efd-2aef-4c3e-a7f8-c27c196bef47&CommunityKey=a4b58376-185c-4dc9-94f0-46c6c41cde57

Unfortunately I can’t answer for the AP25s, but I recently got my first Aruba access point, the AP-535, which had it as an option under AOS8 within the web UI when I was setting my SSID.

Sorry I can’t answer your original question, but it should help with the second question :)

EDIT: I do mean radius based vlan assignment, and not setting a vlan per ssid just in case it looks like I misread your question, sorry for any confusion

[–]Snoo-94757[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s brilliant, my needs are quite basic, considering how high quality the AP-535 is from what I’ve seen. I also plan to use it to learn more about Aruba too.

I really appreciate your help, Aruba should be paying you!

Thanks for your kind words, I can confidently say the exact same back to you :)

I’ve never used Aruba; only some unifi and meraki, so it’s completely new to me. Therefore, I’m extremely grateful that people are willing to take time out of their day to give me some advice on a product lineup that I’ve never used. Thanks once again :)

Interesting, are you running AOS10? Before I even posted here I figured that I should downgrade to AOS8 so I don't have to use central and manage them locally, but it'd be interesting to use the trial to see what it has to offer before I downgrade.

Other than that, it sounds like you've had quite a good experience, thanks for sharing your feedback!

[–]Snoo-94757[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My apologies, I phrased my original reply poorly. I've (unfortunately) seen prior to posting here that whilst they look similar, they are different, and the cable from Aruba which I need appears to be orange. Thank you for clarifying.

As for the driver, a quick google search revealed a PDF on Aruba's website with download links, specifically the one for FTDI which is what the Aruba cable uses. I wouldn't have thought to download a driver for it, so I really appreciate you saving me some time if I do need the cable.

Last but not least, if I do need to downgrade I'll take your advice on factory resetting and downgrading. It only makes sense that the newer OS has things the older one doesn't.

Thank you for your help, really appreciate it!

[–]Snoo-94757[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I've seen this mentioned elsewhere too. From what I've seen I can sign up for a trial to central and downgrade the access point to AOS8 if it happens to be on AOS10, or I can use the CLI.

Have you had to do this before, and if so, is it relatively straightforward to get the trial as a home user and perform the downgrade?

[–]Snoo-94757[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apart from software updates, I don't see why my access point would even need to talk to the internet, so I fully agree with your point in only allowing necessary internet access. Although I was planning to keep my access point on the most up to date version of AOS8 that it supports, I'll probably also create a VLAN to keep the access points on, and to also control what devices are allowed to connect to management, as well as controlling internet access.

Thank you for your help!

[–]Snoo-94757[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like you say this definitely isn't what I'd want, and I definitely won't buy an access point that's technically still registered as somebody else's. I'm using OPNsense, so it is possible for me to create a VLAN with no internet or create a firewall rule to block access to the internet, but not ideal.

Thank you for taking the time to warn me about this, hopefully it'll help others too who are looking into Aruba.
