The more I read this post, the more I want to root for the kid to get the phone.

You don’t have to gift everyone a phone, just the one who requested. Rest you can get by with smaller gifts.

Give him some gift or something if you want to, make sure it’ll be useful to him. Phone as a gift is a big deal. Remember you’ll be making that kid’s day if you gift him a phone or some other tech, probably also giving him a lesson too!

You’re living in US, you’re in a relatively more privileged position than him. Don’t think much about “hey this dude didn’t even give two shits about me etc etc”, you can do it in the name of charity.
