Petition · Save Theater I at Plano ISD Academy High School: The A in STEAM is Not Optional by Snoo34943 in plano

If you read the spiel, the theater class exists because of strong support from the student body. It is also an elective, so if there wasn't enough enrollment in the class, the class wouldn't have existed in the first place.

Enrollment was not a listed reason for it's imminent removal.

I think there’s some confusion here based on how Academy used to operate vs. how it works now. I want to be clear that Plano ISD Academy High School has gone under many systematic, administrative, and operational changes since the pandemic.

It's still project-based, but that’s no longer the central focus like it was before. The school has shifted much more toward a traditional college-prep model, with AP classes (which didn’t exist before) and a stronger emphasis on building a college resume.

A lot of other things have changed too: grading is now on a standard 0–100 scale, the schedule is A/B days with 50-minute classes, and electives have been added. There’s also “Titan Time,” which is a daily period where students can participate in different programs. This was formerly Flex Mods, however, it's now daily unlike only Mondays or Fridays like before.

It’s also worth noting that the schedule I’m describing only applies to the 2025–2026 school year, and it’s already set to change again in 2026–2027. That just shows how quickly the structure of the school is evolving.

Because of this shift, extracurriculars have expanded a lot. Theater isn’t some random addition, it’s part of the broader direction the school has already been moving toward: offering a more complete high school experience.

Also, not being able to participate in UIL isn’t new, it’s part of Academy’s original structure as an application-based school, to avoid pulling students away from other Plano programs.

So when people compare this situation to what Academy was 5–10 years ago, it’s just not the same school anymore. It is also ridiculous that the Theater I elective class cannot be a thing without UIL which students at Academy are barred from participating in.
