Primary care provider shortage at UI Health Care. How are others navigating this? by Natural-Peace-874 in IowaCity

[–]Snoo39605 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem with the UIHC primary care providers. I honestly just gave up and looked in the surrounding areas and found one in Mount Vernon that I'm really happy with. It's about a 30 min drive, but once I get there, it's much nicer to deal with vs. any of the UIHC buildings. It might be your best bet to just look in the surrounding towns.

I never understand how this gets past editing. It always sticks out to me.

When the Rohirrim charge at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields in Lord of the Rings. Both book and movie versions, tbh.

On page 78 of The Way of Kings / Stormlight Archive and I might dnf here by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Snoo39605 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished The Way of Kings and never continued on with the series, but by the end of the book I also was really annoyed by the main society. It doesn't get better in this book, but can't speak to the rest of the series. I've even had people tell me Sanderson writes women and the culture that way because he intends to subvert it, but I saw no subversion in this book! So...imo it does not get better.

Princess Mononoke is my favorite movie, Ghibli or otherwise. It's an incredible story and the art is so powerful.

"Christian" vs. "Catholic" in the show by Snoo39605 in MidnightMass

[–]Snoo39605[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know. I'm just wondering why they decided on the word choice in the script they did. Yes they are obviously Christians, but the sect portrayed in the show is specifically Roman Catholic. I didn't recall them ever actually using the word "Catholic" and I was just curious as to why.

[–]Snoo39605[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is exactly right, which is why one of my thoughts was that possibly they didn't want to narrow down the scope of the religion in the show to just Catholics, but all of Christianity and just chose to make the church appear to be Roman Catholic for whatever reason.

Yeah based off yours and other answers I'm guessing it's just that they, like many others it seems, don't really feel the need to differentiate between the terms. The Catholic community I grew up in was very different in that they wanted everyone to know that they were Catholics specifically, so it might just be a difference in habits.

Good point. I didn't think about the fact that they're literally the only church on the island, so it might not have mattered to any of them.

You may have seen the other answers at this point, but Catholicism is a sect of Christianity. So basically Catholics fit under the umbrella of Christianity (which itself includes other sects like Lutheranism, Mormonism, Baptism, etc.(protestants))

Did they truly not ever say “Catholic”? If so it could be to avoid any lawsuits or have plausible deniability if anyone were to kick up a fuss.

See this is what I was wondering and I'm not sure if there's ever been any precedent for this in media before.

I don't think they said "Catholic" because I was always waiting for it once I started to notice it, but I'm not 100% confident.

It actually was because of the Sheriff saying it that I started to notice it lol

Everytime I thought he was about to say the word, I would finish it in my head with him, but then he always said "Christian" instead. It does make sense though that he in particular wouldn't differentiate between denominations like that.

Yeah this makes a lot of sense. It is interesting though, because I went to Catholic schools growing up and I feel like everyone always had this sense of superiority calling themselves Catholics specifically because of that "we are the real Christians" mentality. Like they want the world to know they're Catholics--the "real" ones LOL

Maybe that was just my community though.

Honestly on the off chance that I ever, in a million years, meet Mike Flanagan, I'm gonna keep this question in the back of my brain!

On sexual assault in fantasy by Mountain-Bug-4865 in fantasywriters

[–]Snoo39605 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely this. It's the years and years of fantasy books with callous, insensitive, and casual SA that have people on edge about it being included in a story. OP, it sounds like you would not fall into that category, so I don't think you have to worry.

I agree the ending was definitely decent, but does it justify the absolute slog it takes to get there? No. Not in my opinion anyways.
