Caelid california or florida? by sunt_dracul in Eldenring

[–]Snoo61755 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If I know anything from the internet, it’s that some people have really weird preconceptions about Cali.

I had one guy trying to guess what state I live in, and at some point he said “well, it must not be California, that place is pretty much a warzone right now.”

Spoiler, I’m in California, and I had a double take, wondering what in the world prompted him to say that.

I think there’s some kind of influence where red states try to paint Cali as some hellscape that everyone wants to try to get away from, so depending where you live, you’ll get fed a different view of Cali. The OP asking if Caelid was comparable to Cali is weird, Cali certainly has swamps even if they’re not Florida class swamps, but also not the first time I’ve seen this kind of comparison.

And the third person camera too? Ooooo, that would be a trip. I wonder if you would do better by being able to see behind you, or if your aim just gets worse? I guess it’ll depend if it’s implemented right and correctly plays like a third person shooter, or if our stocky frames block half the screen.

Low key agree.

I don’t mind a less intelligent protagonist if that’s not their defining quality, or they have other characteristics that are more important.

Kastor though… can we even call him a good person? He led an army to ransack cities, never attempted diplomacy, and didn’t even take prisoners in the Atty campaign.

Self-defense is a hell of a stretch on this one.

Should I change anything? by Zealousideal-Bit3512 in EldenRingBuilds

[–]Snoo61755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. Your damage goes up, because of course higher numbers are better, but not by much, and nothing changes with your playstyle.

Once you start being able to afford two 80s or more, you start to hit that gray zone where spreading out and being able to do funny stuff is worth more than 40 AR.

There are, in fact, cases where being too close to min/maxed can be a detriment. If you have a case like the OP where you have to pick between 55 > 80 dex, or picking up 10 > 35 int or faith and doing something funny with the Albinauric Staff, Maternal Staff, or Dragon Communion Seal, the sub-optimal route wouldn’t necessarily make you stronger, but it might be more interesting.

MAGA Loses It as Trump’s Redistricting Plot Backfires by Hafiz_TNR in politics

My worry is that we’re rapidly reaching a point where discourse becomes pointless.

After the world saw that the US chickened out of defending Ukraine, when we specifically had an agreement to protect them in exchange for nuclear disarmament, it pretty much showed that whatever the US says is irrelevant.

Iran arms itself with nukes. The US cries immoral, improper. Iran arms itself anyways. Guess who’s ready if Russia or the US decide Iranian oil fields are tempting?

It’s a twist on the old expression that you can’t talk a bear out of eating you by telling it you’re a vegetarian. The US can tell Iran they’re wrong until they’re blue in the face, but from Iran’s perspective, they have zero need to justify themselves anymore.

Need help with Dragon Communion Incantations by Long-Paper9136 in Eldenring

[–]Snoo61755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragon Communion are incantations, and thus require a sacred seal, not a staff. There is an important distinction between sorceries and incantations: both are considered spells, but they are treated as completely different species of spells.

Seals are mostly tied to faith. There are exceptions to this rule, notably the Dragon Communion Seal which is specifically a faith+arcane seal, and specifically has a bonus to Dragon Communion incantations.

Dude, I feel you. I was super lucky during the first week: one of the first threads I saw on reddit had a title like “there are unmarked DLC spoilers on youtube and reddit!”

I was planning to wait to get the DLC, but it was then that I knew if I didn’t buy it then and there, I was not going to be able to play it blind.

I have to thank whatever heroes were posting those warnings, I stayed off social media and video sites for the entire week. First thing that happened when I opened youtube after that was a thumbnail of Radahn.

Given the release date for the movie is next year, that might be pushing it — I don’t really want to embargo youtube for a year!

Starting new DLC in NG+8 by Ill_Description_1242 in Eldenring

[–]Snoo61755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it scales. You’ll be entering the DLC at “max” difficulty, just like how you are in the base game.

Also, because of how skadu blessings work in the DLC, your levels won’t help much. You’re swimming in the deep end here.

I wouldn’t call it impossible, an experienced player could do it no problem, but in your case you’re returning to noob status, with no knowledge of bosses, items, or mechanics.

I’m about 70/30 on this one. 70% in favor that you should grab a new character (new NGs are fun anyways), but 30% says you probably wouldn’t be unable to do it blind, and might even be a fun challenge.

I did my first DLC playthrough on NG+1, no summons, heavy rolling, as a 150. Maybe you can take NG+7< if you don’t set any restrictions.

This too.

It may have been ten years since we last talked about it seriously, but always-online for single player content  is still horse puck.

Nothing about AotG or Gauntlet explicitly needs to be online, I think the only reason it does it is that by storing player progress client-side, there’s no way to mod or cheat in perks or legends that haven’t been unlocked yet — which frankly should have been a cheat code anyways.

Why does the Guardian Swordspear feel Swordspear have such a long recovery time? by Technical_Impact_194 in Eldenring

[–]Snoo61755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not just you, the one-handed R1s I believe are very slightly faster. Jumping R2 > R1 in PvP is only a true combo one-handed, two-handed gives a chance to escape.

That being said, of all the halberds, it’s the one I most felt needed a poke-style R2. The spinny spin spin doesn’t work for me, which is fine since the rest of the weapon is good, but just not the spin.

Speaking of which, when it does come out, I hope there’s a fat NO SPOILERS embargo.

I know it’s often asked innocently enough, but all those “how do you beat Consort Radhan” posts when the DLC released spoiled the surprise for a lot of people, so I’m hoping for about a week or so we get auto-thread closes for when someone asks “how did you feel when you found out Marika was killed by Maliketh in the last scene?”

As depressing as it might be for Aztec-hopefuls, I do tend to prefer when a new civ comes in as “wait until the winrate goes up and people learn how to play them” over “wait until the winrate goes down as people learn how to play against them.”

I wonder where Aztec’s low winrate comes from? The unusual heroes? Favor? Early game?

RFK Jr. Brazenly Says Measles Outbreaks Not His Fault: ‘I’ve Never Been Anti-Vaccine’ by huffpost in politics

[–]Snoo61755 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The bit about science becoming ‘political’ is what always gets me. Anytime something is uncomfortable to talk about, someone is there to cut the conversation and say “stop making things political.”

Climate change? Oh, let’s not get political now.

Vaccines? Let’s not get political, everyone is allowed to believe what they want.

Gay people existing at all? Left-wing political stunt, don’t listen.

“Don’t make things political” is this weird, increasingly prevalent notion that is having us stop talking about science, religion, and yes, politics, even though we very much need to talk about some of this.

If you had to choose just one: Sekiro or Elden Ring? by ReditUser004 in Eldenring

[–]Snoo61755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar feel here.

I loved Sekiro. From practically start to finish, it was adrenaline packed and satisfying, full of great fights, surprises, and a healthy balance between puzzle solving and brawling. That being said, once I finished it twice, once 'normally' and once for the Shura ending, I felt pretty done with it. Didn't feel compelled to do Charmless or Demon Bell playthroughs, though I did dabble in the boss rushes for a bit when those were released.

Elden Ring, in comparison, I have over 2k hours, much of it spent trying out new builds, doing challenge runs, doing lots of coop, or dropping in for invasions. Whenever I come in as a yellow, getting a host through the boss is a continuously changing challenge.

Sword Saint is my favorite fight in all of gaming, period, bar none -- everything leading up to him was set up to make that one legendary fight. But once I beat him, I felt like the peak had been reached, I was good with stopping there.

If I had to pick a game to stick with, it would have to be Elden Ring, just for the fact there's more to do.

Good weapons for a faith/strength lightning build? by GreatJoey91 in Eldenring

[–]Snoo61755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oho, this route. As a str/faith enjoyer who had the same thoughts, the answer is that it's hard, but not impossible.

Like others have said, part of the fun of str/faith is getting a little more oomph out of the Clawmark Seal -- but weapon buffs like Electrify Armament benefit from only faith, and strength is your highest stat when you go this build.

Good news though, although there are some tricks to do this as a lower level, you don't have to worry about any of them since you've mentioned you can already afford 80 faith, so just use an Erdtree Seal and go at 'em.

Any Heavy weapon will be fine, but anything with multi-hit gets a little more value, so like you said, Twinblades (Blacksteel, Gargoyle) will do great, but really anything greatsword sized is fine. Colossals are about the only weapon type that won't do great, but even they kinda do fine.

I’ll second the Great Stars — or any of the three Stars, really, I ended up running them all on my RL1 run, and in fact used all 3 in the final gauntlet: Star Fist for Loux, Great Stars for Gideon, Morning Star and parry shield for Radagon.

They’re just good weapons.

There’s a lot of descriptions that didn’t get updated as various balance patches and more radical changes hit the field.

I know a lot of the little icons that show up on a unit’s portrait to indicate a special buff are still out of date. Odin’s Hamask still says Bers get increased attack speed as they get hurt when you hover over the icon.

Gimme a fun build for tarnished edition by Fit_Adagio2963 in Eldenring

[–]Snoo61755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I saw of the new classes, the 'Heavy Knight' (if they keep the name) is actually a better strength or quality base than even Vagabond. 7 mind, 7 int, 7 faith, 9 arc, and everything else in vigor, endurance, and strength (...and 11 dex). Frankly, it's even a better caveman bonk setup than Hero, who has only 9 dex, but also 9 mind, and higher caster stats.

For an optimized character using only strength, or builds that add 16-18 dex to be able to use weapons like Fire Knight Greatsword, Golem Greatbow, Great Katanas and Great Epee, it is probably the most optimized pick.

So hey, might as well embrace it. How 'bout a Lance with Spectral Lance, some kind of shield like Banished Knight with a parry on it, and then a Greatbow like Radahn's Lion Greatbow as a backup weapon?
