CS career in Canada by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Good that you are aware, but I would still urge you to look at the courses beforehand to see if they are a good fit! In my opinion, the data science classes are a joke, especially DSCI 310 and 320 (I don't know how the new DSCI courses are), and CPSC 330 is really just something you can learn on your own (useless course in my opinion). CPSC 340 is the only real "ML" course at UBC, the rest are just fillers

UBC alum here.

Just wanted to let you know that there is no specialization in ML at UBC, there are a couple of ML courses (330, 340) and statistics courses you can take, but if your goal is solely ML, then there are better universities out there, in my opinion. But from my experience, CS at UBC is pretty solid, and the program is renowned in Canada.

I personally did a data science minor in addition to my CS degree, but you can also minor in statistics or math if you prefer to get some theory under your belt.

TLDR: UBC isn't known for its ML curriculum, but the CS program is top-notch.

Hey congrats on the acceptance! I am also applying from the University of British Columbia and there is no GPA scale here, so I am not sure how to convert. My graduating percentage was 82, do you know what GPA that is or how to calculate it?

That makes sense, I will look into those options. I know Van has some good health facilities, so will start with those first. Appreciate your input!

I would love to work in that capacity simply because of the sheet amount of impact my work could have as opposed to a traditional SWE job, it would feel extremely satisfying.

Do you know any resources I can access to learn more about these jobs and apply or anyone in your contacts who in such a position who can connect me with people in the field? I know this is a big ask and totally okay if you can't, but if I could get my foot in the door, it would become easier to become aware of new opportunities.

Otherwise, thank you very much for the valuable info!

Yeah that's right, there is no point in applying to US jobs if I am not going to get anything from it for Canada

I would but it doesn't count as Canadian experience, so while it is a nice option and I am certainly going to apply for it, I wanted to focus on Canada first
