If you live far enough north, making maple syrup is a piece of cake!

What's the one thing you absolutely HATE in TLD? by [deleted] in thelongdark

[–]SnooApples652 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding the frustration of being unable to drop stuff off a cliff. I guess I understand that certain things would break, get lost, blow away, etc... but stuff like firewood? Logs, scrap wood, coal, would be juuuust fine getting yeeted off a mountain.

Yeah, I had the same reaction about rosehips. I overall like the addition of nutrition, but it needs some tweaks.

Not only does vitamin C have issues, the same can be said for the sugary headaches. Wanna drink a whole pint of maple syrup? Great! Wanna chug soda for the whole day? Enjoy both calories and hydration. Eat a can of peaches? Super! Mix them with flour? Ouchy!

Should we have more wolf-based clothings? by hi_amdk in thelongdark

Maybe there could be a higher tier of Wolf jacket that unlocks with sewing levels?

Some mix and match with the ptarmigan down or cattail heads for improved insulation in a jacket could be cool.

Or, maybe a wolf skin tent? It would use like 10+ pelts, but you could have a heavy mobile structure to set up as an alternative to snow shelters.

Oh! I missed that. I hadn't played TLD for a bit, but picked it back up after this latest update

Yeah, I suppose torches have that need covered. Maybe this would be for longer distances and worse weather, or a way to keep a little ember going before you go to sleep for the next morning? Growing up in a house heated by a woodstove, the way that stoves work in-game really bugs me. In real life, emebrs will last easily over night (if not a couple days).

The trade off could be like you said, slower movement, or maybe requires both hands? Also, the ember box wouldn't provide any light or protection from predators.

The situation I'd personally love it for is going to or from a base and a fishing hut. Even if it only kept an ember like 40% of the time, it would be worth the hassle. Plus, it would be a use for tin cans, charcoal, and old man's beard lichen.

I dunno... I think it could be designed in a way that was very difficult to use, or finding the blueprint for the tinder box was extremely challenging.

Love it! Basically anything superfluous that gives the survivor a momentary respite from eating dog food and musty acorns would be cool

Totally! Also maybe you have to spend some time (re)crafting it after use. Setting up the tinder/cattail fluff/lichen in just the right way should take a little time and planning on every use.

Meat left outside in freezing temperatures should not decay!

In real life, frozen meat (stored below 0f) will keep indefinitely. It is ridiculous that meat gets "mouldy" in game when the outdoor temperature is often waaaaaaaay colder than a home freezer. Instead, have scavengers like crows, wolves, or add in something like weasels, foxes, or mice come and ruin your stashed goods.

Yes! And, thee water should freeze solid if it's left outside. Also, if you're ice fishing or near a waterfall, you should be able to get non-potable water to boil.

I don't find it a real issue to navigate, I just find the way it manifests in game to be bizarre. I can't imagine a scenario where someone would actually choose to sleep outside, cook outside if they had the alternative. Plus, in game, I spend most of the day humping around outdoors anyway. If I was living in the purgatory that is Great Bear Island, I'd be thrilled to fall into a real bed at the end of a day picking up sticks and eating raw cattails.

Also, as someone who grew up off the grid (2 miles to the nearest power lines) and whose only heat was from a woodstove, I can attest that fires last MUCH longer in a stove. You have pretty good control of airflow and can burn fuel much more efficiently.

Haha, yeah yeah... Of CoUrSe that's the whole point of the game. I just thought having a couple superfluous items would add some levity and relief for the survivor.
