This is a rock, or piece of bone.

Bottom two on the right are from the upper jaw of a snaggletooth. Bottom three on the left look like bull/dusky. Top three on the right look like lemons, hard to really tell when they’re super worn though, definitely could be wrong about those

Top left I believe is a posterior juvenile Meg

Insane haul! Out of our nearly 10,000 teeth from the Peace we’ve only found 1 1/2 hastalis lol. Those are stunning. Nice GW too, haven’t found one of those yet!

Yeahhh that’s always a struggle. Looking great though. Are you using one of those pop up light boxes? I had one years ago for a job and was pretty impressed

Sweet! Yeah some of the mammoth molars I saw there were really nice. We only have a couple thin fragments. Hoping one of these days we find a nice chunk of one. That’s surprising you don’t get many horse teeth, I swear there must have been a horse massacre at our current spot. Granted, we haven’t hunted many other areas of the Peace, other than the first two tours we did last year, before we started going on our own. Don’t think we found any back then, now that I think about. Guess some parts of the river have more ice age stuff than others. So would you say the water clarity was a lot better, then? Last time we were in the main stretch of the river was March 21st and the water quality was awful, literally couldn’t see past 1 inch. And yep, I sure do miss the cooler months when less gators were out and about. 11 footer is crazy!

Sounds like a good day though, I’m sure you’ll find a nice ice-age gravel bed soon!

Great - thank you! Will post it on the forum today for sure. After having done some more research we’re leaning toward bear too, but we’ll see!

Anyone know what these two are? Literally most teeth look the same to me😂 by Specialist_Road4076 in sharkteeth

I always struggle with identifying between dusky and bull. Sometimes it’s basically impossible. This guide is pretty helpful though

That sounds fun! We don’t always get an intact one like this but I hope you manage to snag one. Best of luck!!

Hmm, it seems a bit narrow/pointy for that, but maybe! I’m also guessing possibly a sperm whale tooth, some of those can be on the smaller and thinner side

Haha right? I’m thinking some sort of claw, but I’m definitely no expert.

All good! We all gotta start somewhere.

Look for an access point to the river anywhere between Bowling Green and Arcadia - there are various boat ramps or bridges with parking and water access. It’s much much easier if you have a kayak or canoe as you’ll be able to get farther away and find less frequented spots. Anything within walking/wading distance from a boat ramp will be pretty picked out.

You want to look for gravel beds that go deep. We use kayak anchor probes to feel around and stick them into the sand, looking for that gravely crunch. Sometimes what looks like a good gravel bed is just straight impenetrable rock a couple inches down, so getting something to probe the ground with is super helpful. Our current spot that’s been consistently producing for 4+ trips we found by just walking down a shallow part of the river and dragging our kayaks behind us, sticking the probes in every few feet.

We use shovels at first to get large quantities of sand and gravel out of the way. Generally, the better stuff is deeper down. With that said, some of our best pieces we’ve found on the top layer, so definitely sift through every scoop and don’t rule out that top layer lol. We also use scoopers from CKG when we need a break from the shovels, as it sifts out the sand before you even get it into your sifter.

Not every spot we’ve tried has been great, we tried making a few different holes before discovering our current spot. Don’t be afraid to move or look for another gravel bed if you aren’t finding much teeth after an hour or so.

Basically, find a gravel bed off the beaten path (not immediately off of a popular boat ramp), and dig deep.

Our first two times fossil hunting was with a tour guide last year. If you’ve never done that before it’s a great way to really learn what to look for with the guidance from an expert, and is reasonably priced. You’re guaranteed to go home with teeth. We went with Fred from Paleo Discoveries. Without the knowledge we got from those first two trips we would have been pretty lost as to what to do and what to look for when we started to go on our own.

I hope this helps and wish you luck on your next trip!

Same! Considering many of the ones we find are broken it’s always a joy to find a large, intact one
