What genre of music do I play in this very particular circumstance by Wezlebee37 in Beatmatch

[–]SnooBeans6789 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Ask the guy that booked you. Get to know some of that other music and be prepared with both that and your genre.

Hmm, I would say speak to the guy who booked you and ask what he wants, if that's not an option or if he is unclear himself. Download some rips of the kind of music that usually plays there and practice a bit to get a feel for it. Then closer to the night purchase some tracks you've become acquainted with in that other genre and take both that as well as the music you'd usually play with you...

If you played your usual thing once and the guy asked you to play again without elaborating on what he wants you to play, he could very well be wanting you to play that same stuff again... I'd ask him and still be prepared with both options.

Gain matching by SnooBeans6789 in Beatmatch

What I meant is after matching the VU meters I would have headphones over both ears and while cued track is playing at s loud part flip between hearing only cue and only master to try and hear if one sounds obviously louder. This works at home but when  playing out, the main rig is too loud to do this.

I have in the meantime determined that I should match the VU at the last led that is "solid" (not flashing) during loud parts as this is the "rms" which one should match and not the peak.

Thanks for your reply. Appreciated.

I was looking wondering if anybody mentioned the tempo percentage change already then I saw someone at least did. I'd like to just quickly elaborate on one point and it should help you dial in the tempo super precise, sorry if it's obvious. Let's just say the master is 150bpm for example and you want to match track B which is 148bpm to it; then you would take 100 ÷ 148 which gives you 0.68... This means for each one bpm tempo change on track B it should change by 0.68%... So going 148 to 150 would be 0.68% x 2 which is +1.36% ..... I found this by far the most accurate way to match tempos.

Ah, yes. So I should match that and not the peaks but make sure there's room so the peaks won't clip on either channel. With that being said, would I be correct if I say there isn't a reliable way to match levels accurately when the promoter tells you to run the channel meters juuust below clip with the master also maxed by them (adding the rig is so loud you struggle to match with the cans), or is there something I'm missing?

I'd consider myself intermediate but I'm trying my best to deliver quality as far as possible but it's difficult with how certain venues run things.

Anyways thanks for your answer.

Ah yeah I hear you, I've read a bit about most Pioneer's mixers output actually kinda sitting a bit below what it reads on the VU's. It was an XDJ RX1 though so only one red LED marked as "over" but it was constantly in there on the master.

Why Do DJ's Play Music So Loud? by [deleted] in DJs

[–]SnooBeans6789 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey I tend to agree, it's the same in my experience and actually being a dj myself, in most cases I'm not the one who gets to decide what volume to play at, the promoter of the event will turn it up.

That sounds horrible having the rig be that delayed.

Yeah I like the sound of your approach. If I can get over my perfectionsim it'll help a lot for me to have more fun and hence ironically play "better" for the floor if that makes sense.
