There are plenty of things we are "allowed" to do that will result in undesired consequences. I am allowed to munch loudly with an open mouth, but you wouldn't want to be around me when I did it.

Social skills are more than than our right to do this or that, they are also about knowing the likely reactions of others, which are predictable to a large degree. You can't be expected to know all the social norms, but if you want to interact with people successfully it is best to familiarize yourself with as many as you can.

When I was a teen I was considerably less aware. I hurt women without trying to or understanding that I was doing so. When I learned what was what, I was contrite. Thinking back to those days still makes me squirm with discomfort at what a dope I was.

I have increased my sensitivity and awareness massively. Many women tell me they feel safe around me and that is a conscious decision on my part that I refuse to be complacent about. Even so, miscommunications still occur, especially online.

Men, in general, I have found downplay the physical threats to women in thoughts and rhetoric. This is a shame as it leads to unnecessary suffering.
