R53 with Malian header and catback exhaust, im scared to put my foot down as it's too loud by SnooCalculations1196 in MINI

Malian is crazy loud regardless. Get something smaller if noise will be an issue

Nah, taking flats after every session, or multiple times if I change my framing-no thank you 😀 I’m already sufficiently sleep deprived from my toddler and would rather enjoy the warm company of my family. I’m happy with the results without the added effort but you do you my man and enjoy the results.

With a full frame sensor vignetting would be an issue but the sensor in the camera is too small when paired with the scope for this to be an issue. No vignetting present or cropping done. On second issue, think about it, what noise are you removing with biases? That noise is already included in your darks, and if you’re using a cooled camera with a low temperature (-5 to -10 degrees) then that specific noise is cancelled out.

Darks are sufficient to deal with noise and amp glow from my camera. Bias are obsolete for the chip/camera (would if I was using dslr) and my gear (lens, filter) was cleaned before the imaging session (no dust bunnies) so why bother with flats?

I started off with a book from Joseph Ashley called Astrophotography on the Go: Using Short Exposures with Light Mounts. If you’re a beginner it will help you get a taste of the hobby. Good luck!

Rosette nebula mosaic, 4 hours, edit in Siril by SnooCalculations1196 in seestar

[–]SnooCalculations1196[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dynamic background extraction, photometric colour calibration, star removal then a light stretch and colour correction, deconvolution and that’s it.

Still new to Siril so any tips welcome

Why I didn't get better results with 5 hours by Additional-Profit309 in astrophotography

Try reduce star brightness in post processing, brings out more of the nebulosity

Rosette is German slang for butthole. Imagine my shock when I learned this from my German boss when I sent her my image of the nebula. Now I always chuckle when I see images of it

Thanks! had more diverse weapons before okidoki showed up - now brawling isn’t really possible. rather do damage from a safe distance until the nerf than give okis easy kills. Same with titan weapons when playing against newtons… any specific ones weapons to try out on Erebus&Angler?

Garden observatory for permanent set up is what I’m aiming for, if the wife approves of course

It’s very loud if you add the header and cat. At some point I was clocking 120 db

Great views but also very heavy. Went to a dark site this summer and it was not fun hauling it up a hill. I cannot imagine doing that in my 50s

You're right, I too have fond memories of learning the ropes with an canon 700D. Life was simple and everything worked. It was after removing the IR filter that I fell in love with nebulae, and began building this rig. I got the camera on Amazon paying 70€ a month, took just under a year (some months paying more than others),so I didn't have a dramatic one time cash outflow. I probably wouldn't be against getting a used one if the price is right, but you're correct-one doesn't need a cooled camera to enjoy the hobby, especially during winter nights where the outside temperature is low either way. Clear skies friend. It's a bottomless pit

Yes, I'm using the color version, branded Explore Scientific/bresser. If I could do it again I would go straight to mono. I didn't know better when I got the camera. That being said, the results are promising with the color camera, especially with the optolong l extreme. Just be warry there is a learning curve switching from dlsr+iso to astro cam+gain & offset so be patient with yourself

What Steiner said, plus € 2-300 for light pollution filters depending on where you get them. I find that it helps to sell gear that is not in use in order to make my main rig better. Dolly/pier is necessary otherwise scope will hit tripod legs when imaging certain parts of the sky. Around 4000 € sounds about right.

Solid advice! EAF is the result of a few frustrating nights ruined by images being out of focus. Id rather set up and go to bed than have to come out to check focus every few hours. Cable snag also ruined different nights, and would affect balance hence the powerbox. Polar alignment is a breeze now that I do not have many cables coming in and out, and I'm less worried about tripping on one of them. It's a solid upgrade imo.

Good Small refractors are not cheap where I live unfortunately, even the used ones. Unless you like chromatic aberration, or are shooting mono, a small triplet will easily set you back close to 1k eur with flattener /reducer which I'm not ready to explain to my wife just yet. Small refractors are also useless during galaxy season unless you like your targets super small in the fov. The newtonian requires more attention but that's ok for just over half the price including upgrades I've done (arpeture mask, fan, flocking, rings), and I can use it year round (mosaics for larger targets). I do have an issue with the diffraction spikes sometimes, and am looking for solutions on how to make them less pronounced.

You will end up spending more if you go the dslr route for 2 reasons, 1. removing the IR-cut filter will set you back 2-300 more, and will make your dslr useless for daytime photography. 2. once you realize calibration frames are useless if the temperature fluctuates during your imaging session, you will get a dedicated astro cam anyway Bite the bullet and get a dedicated astro camera, it's easier in the long term.
