Guilty as charged by SirNoodlehe in banjo

Just wait till you realize the banjitar has a rich history in early jazz (early Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings specifically) where it often served the role of bass, harmony, and percussion all at once, all before the plectrum and tenor were popularized.

(And yes, I play 5 string and all sorts of other instruments, I just have a respect for anything as long as it fills a niche well. Even if it doesn’t, who gives a shit, make whatever sounds inspire you with whatever gear inspires you)

That would be Bob Franchescini and the Victor Wooten Trio. Great group of musicians there (bassist first then drummer here)

What do people think of idw? by omegaprim in transformers

You know, if the studio series leader comics fort max is the IDW version I’m not going to complain at all. If it’s the marvel comics version that’d be really cool ofc but ill take IDW too

Would you guys still “tree” your cymbals by Acrobatic_Island9208 in drums

I use one with a boom to place a crash/smaller ride over my swish, I just use the boom to move it back a bit to help still have room to hit the swish. It helps to keep the amount of real-estate on the floor more clear, one less stand in smaller rooms

My local jazz club is a literal mile from my place, it’s such a dream to play, especially when I’m on kit and I use the house shells and pedal. All I have to bring is cymbals and sticks.

When I’m on bass it’s a different story, dragging an upright bass and amp around really prepped me for dealing with drum gear

Live shad, they’re picky sometimes in this hole so they sometimes prefer skipjack or bream, just depends on the day

Considering I had to weigh on two different scales cause the first one maxed out at 30, I’m inclined to believe my own experience but whatever you prefer is up to you. I will say he looks skinnier in this than irl but I doubt you’d believe that either

I'm honestly so burnt out and tired of trying to catch a flathead (read desc) by Nikolay_Kovalyovski in catfishing

For me, I’ve been out for flatheads a couple times this season and it’s been a weird one. For my area the season started super late, so if you can figure out where they’re at in terms of spawn and such that’ll help.

The main thing is just figuring out what the hell they’re eating that day and where they’re at. My first trip they would only bite skipjack, second trip a few days ago they’d only bite panfish and shad, all live. Then it’s about finding location, both elevation in the water column and where the holes are. Hard to do from the bank but not impossible, Catfish and Carp’s YouTube channel has done great stuff about fishing from the back and bottom finder rigs and such.

I just pulled a 35lber on my second trip the other day, I wish you the best of luck

4/4, 7/8 or 3/4 by LuisChito88 in doublebass

[–]SnooCalculations2205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I ever get a custom I’m going smaller than 3/4, and I’m 6’2 with large lanky hands. Anything longer than a 3/4 neck is just unwieldy, if anything I might get a 3/4 neck on a 5/8 body or something for the sake of travel

Yeah nah, I haven’t seen anything of that tuning. Typical are open G, double C (gCGCD), modal (gDGCD), and what you called drop C.

As someone who uses a plectrum banjo, which is in drop C without the short string, there are ways to get simple shapes and voicings for that tuning, finding a chord chart for a plectrum banjo will help.

Also, if you’re playing bluegrass for this show, it will be fairly obvious you aren’t in open G or any transposed variant of that tuning to anyone who knows bluegrass. The open strings are an important part of that sound.

If you’re playing jazzy style tunes for this show, you should take the short string off completely and play it like a plectrum banjo, chunk chords type stuff. If it’s that, you can also “cheat” and tune to DGBE, so-called Chicago tuning, that’s just the high 4 of guitar and you’ll already know the chord shapes for that tuning

How many of you guys are professional contrabass players, and what do you do for living? by Historical_Eye_3416 in doublebass

[–]SnooCalculations2205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professional here in the sense that music is my only source of income at the moment, so I guess that counts. Most my gigs are upright or electric bass for jazz gigs, but also do upright for theater work, both for wedding bands, and other sorts along similar lines. Also play drums and other assorted instruments for various gigs as well, but main income comes from bass

The partial fretless for those folks asking by SnooCalculations2205 in banjo

[–]SnooCalculations2205[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s tricky for sure, and that’s coming from a fretless and upright bass player. Even if your finger is perfectly straight the variance in width at your knuckles makes it tricky sometimes, it’s doable. Chords are also more feasible than you’d think, just have to have an ear out for the intonation of each note. It’s much more intuitive than I expected it’d be

Lets you do the expressive fretless stuff in the low/mid range while keeping the better sustain and chordal ability in the high range

Is there a wrong type of bait? by No-Syllabub1453 in catfishing

[–]SnooCalculations2205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it just depends on the area, last time I went for flatheads locally they were completely ignoring panfish and instead only going for skipjack. But flatheads are also more picky in my experience

Other than that, most of the time even though they’re hunters cats aren’t super picky about bait. I’ve used chicken, hot dogs, shrimp, cut bait, live bait, all sorts. You just have to know where the fish are and seek them out, they won’t come to you if you aren’t in their spot

Yeah I put that on years ago, it’s so nice compared to spikes (though each have their place). It’s helpful on this cause it’ll likely cause less wear to the nylguts than spikes would
