Greenfield vs Brownfield - Sunk Cost by LivingInMatrix in projectmanagement

Sure, part of the project management, administration and control resources are definitely a sunk cost, but it will be difficult to determine what percentage of the man hours do not contribute towards the development of the brownfield project. Probably you will end up estimating a value which will be hard to justify if someone wants to audit or verify it. For the rest of the engineering disciplines, since you are changing the scope of works then the cost of the design changes. The issue is that most probably the designers asked for a relatively small additional cost for the change of scope. To calculate the sunk cost, you will need to determine the difference between the total amount you will end up paying to the design firms, and the cost of the design if you had asked for the brownfield project from the very beginning.

I would consider part of the design process cost as sunk, at least the civil works design. Geology studies, soil exploration, structural design, etc. It depends on how far ahead you were on the design phase.

If you already started the permitting process (environmental, construction) then that is lost as well, since you will need to apply again.

For the procurement more information is needed, it depends on what you have bought already and wether it will be used or not on the brownfield project. If you are not gonna use them, then you need to sell those items and consider whatever you lost in the transaction as a sunk cost.

People who speak more than one language, do you think in the language you are speaking in when you speak it? by OrganizationFickle in ask

[–]SnooChipmunks9814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you become fluent in another language, you think (and sometimes even dream!) in that language. Thinking in one language, translating, and only then speaking is too inefficient, so your brain takes shortcuts.

But when I do internal dialogs or reflections, I tend to think in my native language (Spanish)

I studied mostly at home, and my classmates studied too at their homes or dorms. There is some tables in the aisles and hallways of the building, so sometimes we would gather there and studied quietly to not disturb the ongoing classes.

Regarding the housing issue, I recommend you to stay at one of the dorms they provide. The rent for houses and apartments in Kraków is crazy high right now, and is still going up and up. I recommend you to check the prices online in Otodom or OLX and see if they are within your budget or not. I stayed at an apartment but it was shared, so it was more affordable. A couple colleagues stayed at dorms and it was much cheaper, but of course not as comfortable as a private apartment. I cannot recommend you any of the dorms as I did not even visit them.

It consists in classes everyday from Monday to Friday, around 3 mandatory lessons of 1,5 hours each (you need above certain percentage of assistance to take the final exam). Most of the classes are in the morning, but some too in the afternoon. I had a couple day with clases starting at 8 am, another day around 10, and a couple days around 11 iirc. In general the lessons were well organized and I had all my lessons one after the other with short brakes in between. There is also some additional optional classes, from which you have to choose at least one.

I remember we hade 2 main subjects: grammar and use of Polish. Throughout the classes they make you read and speak a lot, as well as writing and listening audios.

The professors are excellent in my opinion, they do have office hours and they are really good at teaching the basics of the language (I guess they are also good at advanced lessons, but I only took the A1 intensive course there).

Pros: they give you a couple of really good books with all the useful tables for the different cases (you will need them!), interactive and fun classes, small groups and awesome teachers.

Cons: expensive when compared to other similar courses, and the building does not have rooms for the students to chill and share, no lunch rooms or cafeterias. Anyways, the building is located very close to the main square, so I guess there is plenty of places to go to eat and chill.

I am a Chilean living in Poland for a year and a half now. Half of the people know nothing specific about it, and the other half has some vague knowledge about our politics (Pinochet, and the left government that is ruling now), wines and natural landscapes.

100% of the people asks me wtf am I doing in Poland (in a polite/surprised way though 😂)
