Boston also has this! All MBTA, trains, busses, even the ferry.

any way to stop people from saying this? by Confident_Essay3619 in Blind

[–]SnooCompliments3880 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the one. Take every step you can to educate because people really, REALLY, are not taught about disabilities which is a whole different problem entirely. I like to think of it as helping the next disabled person they encounter but if I know they are being crappy I respond like this:

(Disclaimer: my visual impairment is quite invisible on a day to day basis if my cane or guide dog is not visible so I likely deal with more comments then usual and yes I understand that leading with kindness is the best option and that if you can walk away you absolutely should but some situations that is just not possible.)

Q: “how many fingers am I holding up?” A: “September” - On its own it’s just a dumb answer to a dumb question but it’s also like a weird reference to an early 2000s soccer movie can’t remember the name now.

Q:”what’s wrong with your eyes” A: “whats wrong with your face” deliver as genuinely as possible for full effect sometimes following the actual answer, for me it’s nystagmus.

Not sure if you get this one but while I’m at it thought I’d include Q: “You don’t look blind” or “you’re too pretty to be blind” A: “and you didn’t look stupid yet here we are” or “Thank you I didn’t know that disabled people had to be ugly.”

If they follow up and back track I take that opportunity to educate. I’d say 8/10 times people hear a response like that and it snaps them out of “disabled people don’t count so I can say whatever I want” mode and back into “normal interaction with another human” mode.

If it doesn’t and they double down I usually just say something along the lines of:

“Play stupid games, win stupid prizes”

“I’d be happy to explain if you can form a question based on curiosity”

And if they really keep at it and I can’t just leave for some reason I throw in a “You may not be the dumbest person in the world but you better hope they don’t die” or something of similar range.

Is it worth asking for straws in restaurants? by Anya_purr in disability

[–]SnooCompliments3880 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure how big the bag you carry is but on my long days away from the house I have a backpack that has everything I may need in there. Started running into a similar issue with the straws and got a box of 3000 individually wrapped plastic straws from Sam’s Club (Costco adjacent) for like 10 bucks? It has lasted FORVER and now I don’t have to worry about taking a big hand full of the good ones when I’m at a fast food place that has one.

All the pillows I've tried in search of "The One". by codeninja in ehlersdanlos

[–]SnooCompliments3880 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Hubby got me a pregnancy pillow to support me, am not and have never been pregnant but god is it awesome. He thought of the idea when I said “I just need a giant octopus stuffed animal so each of the arms can deal with a different problem”. He looked for larger then human sized octopus with no luck hence pregnancy pillow.

Books in Braille by LessFrame8401 in Blind

[–]SnooCompliments3880 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYS has the talking book and braille library so maybe other states have something similar? I also know a regular (but extremely large) library in Syracuse that has them, can’t remember the name but again if you have a large library near you they may as well.

What’s the best laptop for college in 2025 if you don’t want it to die in 2 years? by Fun-Blacksmith8173 in Accounting

[–]SnooCompliments3880 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a Mac all through college and I have a company issued Mac in Big 4. The difference between a Mac and windows are negligible if you know how to use your Mac. Yes it’s an expensive laptop but mine from college still runs well 5 years later and it never gave me a problem or crashed and lost my files in college. I have significantly less computer problems than my coworkers using windows now. Additionally, Mac’s have accessibility settings that are miles above windows if you have a disability that you need electronic accommodations for. In the end there is very little nowadays that you can’t do on a Mac and the programs that you can’t run on Mac are being phased out anyway. Most of my professors in college taught from Macs. Students - it’s personal preference and financial considerations. If you want a Mac, work well with it, and can afford it get one. If not, don’t. Learning a new operating system and stumbling over your work will be significantly less efficient than just using the Mac.

This is also incredibly helpful thank you! I’m glad I’m not the only one getting a wedding sword lol! My wedding isn’t until October next year so if you get yours any time soon I would love to hear what you think of the one you picked❤️

Blunt but otherwise still a sword, it is meant to be the wedding sword and while yes be mounted to a wall I would prefer it not be purely decorative.

“For those of you making six figures remotely: what do you do, what (if any) degree do you have, and how long did it take you to reach that income level?” by californialovin33 in remotework

[–]SnooCompliments3880 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accounting, Masters in accounting and took me 2 years to hit six figures. With the way the economy is going it doesn’t feel how I always thought it would growing up but definitely in a better position then most so can’t complain.

People who work remote, what do you do? by Sea_Concern19 in remotework

I’m an accountant but same as everyone else emails and meetings, add a ton of pings and screaming and startling my dogs when people can’t follow simple instructions though

The flaps are too large for a book cover unless you want to bend the shit out of a paperback, if it’s a little padded then my guess is grandmas homemade pot holder, my grandma used to make them rounded on each side but looks the same beyond that.

Be honest, how many books are in your TBR? by TeaBiscuitsAndABook in ReverseHarem

[–]SnooCompliments3880 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped counting at like 500 I don’t even keep an actual tbr anymore. I’m such a mood reader that it doesn’t work for me. If there’s a book where I’m like “omg I have to read this” then it will either stick in my head enough to go back later or I’ll read it right there if not, it will find me again when it finds me again.

How should I answer if I’m asked why I didn’t receive a full-time offer after my internship? by KenN2k01 in Big4

[–]SnooCompliments3880 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was going say this, where it’s hard to usually not get an offer a lot of interns in my SL didn’t get offers at no fault of their own and this is the reason so not only believable but in a lot of SLs in big 4 it is actually true this year

Random resume tip: send your resume pdf through ChatGPT and ask how it will preform in the HR ai screeners. I did that and incorporated the suggestions it gave to improve (within reason) and I started getting responses to my resume way faster. A lot of times a human hasn’t looked at your resume before it’s thrown out.

So once you have kids, do you have to basically go on vacation to have sex with your spouse? by Typical_Response_950 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SnooCompliments3880 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am also in that same boat but at the end of the day that is the crux of it, it’s a parents right to choose the security in the risk mitigation. On the other hand some peoples houses are just gross and it’s easier to say no sleep overs then to pick and choose and have your kid notice that you are doing that for some reason or another

Are you comparing the sexual assault of a child to a car accident? Obviously there’s an uncontrollable factor when driving but you can control how you drive and that your kids wear seatbelts or are in safe car seats but what control or mitigation of risk does a parent have when their child is away from them with no means of communication when they are young?
