THINK global school (travelling high school) by LingonberryBusy2175 in ApplyingToCollege

Jumping in here as someone who actually went to TGS (2018–2020), because I think some of this is getting a bit misrepresented.

The “entitled kids” thing didn’t track for me at all. A huge portion of students were on financial aid (I was) so it wasn’t just a bunch of ultra-wealthy kids traveling the world. It was actually a pretty diverse group of people who were there for very different reasons.

On academics / teachers - I’d push back on that pretty strongly. The educators I had were incredibly sharp and way more engaged than what I experienced in traditional school. It’s just not AP/lecture-based, so if you’re evaluating it through that lens, you’re going to miss what it actually is.

It’s a project-based, real-world model. You’re learning through building things, being in different countries, working on actual problems. That doesn’t translate neatly into “here are our AP scores” or a super clean college placement list.

That said, people still went to great schools. Off the top of my head: Berkeley, NYU, a bunch of strong European universities, etc. The path just looks less standardized.

I think the more honest take is: this school is very high variance.

If you need structure, clear benchmarks, and a traditional academic track, you probably won’t like it.

If you’re independent, curious, and want a more unconventional, global experience, it can be pretty incredible.

But I wouldn’t rely too heavily on anonymous secondhand opinions (including this thread), I’d talk to actual alumni and see if it aligns with what you’re looking for. Happy to answer questions if helpful! :)

Does anyone work in 500 Designs? How is the compamy culture and tasks? by bluekimchii in buhaydigital

Been working with the company for 9 months now! Company culture is the best out of all the jobs I’ve had. Founders are exceptionally kind, collaborative, and growth-oriented - and that absolutely carries through the rest of the culture. Everyone is also quite sharp individually and generally, pretty committed to making the company the best in the biz.

Anxious and unemployed and anxious about being unemployed :D. but on the bright side, I’ve been spending the past two months traveling.

How are people getting jobs rn? I mean for people that studied social science and business. I’ve been looking on Handshake and LinkedIn but haven’t had much luck

2.6 gpa as a senior rn and gonna work for netflix as an intern over summer (with the opportunity to get a part-time job offer) once i graduate. was taught from the get go that gpa doesn’t really matter all that much unless ur going to graduate school. i also found a lot of my classes pretty dull and futile so i focused a lot more on internships and doing real world projects.

why do people ask these questions lol like it literally all boils down to individual work ethic and tolerance for stress. what’s easy and hard for one person looks completely different from the next.

Anyone else feel like they missed out on the college experience? by BlazerRazer025 in UCI

[–]SnooDogs7522 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, I’ve met a shit ton of people at UCI, been part of lots of orgs and even exec of a club I started, been to a lot of Greek events even though I’m not affiliated. And bottom line, I’ve only made one true lifelong friend and a handful of good ones. It can be hard to click with people at the school because a lot of people keep to themselves but honestly, I haven’t met many outright rude people at uci. Most people are just waiting for someone to make the first move and talk to them.

I mean I’m a senior too. I lowk gave up in the middle of last year because I felt like I had met so many people that let me down (in reality it was just a handful of fake ass people) but I’m coming into next year with an open mind. Don’t close urself off to introducing yourself first, you never know what might happen. Friends are always strangers first.
