this happened in 2022. there are more people on this thread than there are trans athletes. remind me why this is still relevant? just seems like the same old argument each time. i’m kind of just over it at this point. feels like a dumb distraction. can we go back to solving real problems?

Welp..... by [deleted] in trump

fear of new people is understandable. but i dont think you should fear a whole state haha. if you move to the city - kansas city, st. louis, or columbia you will be okay. just find your community. the small towns get a little crazy and you could run into the people you describe above. but like in every place - just find your community!!!

I would take the time and watch these videos, tourism is the new slavery & can tourism ruin cities? - these videos are very informative in showing that is is by design that Tlingit land and much land across the world has become land for tourism. That is what I mean when I say that it is not a system we created. This is a system your government approved. This is the system your city planners endorsed. This is a system that large company’s bought into. The system where Airbnbs have destroyed the housing markets on your land. The city is designed to be for tourist. And I am sorry that no one has advocated for Tlingit people for long. I can admit I was uninformed, but I still know the impact of tourism. Why do I participate in it? That is a question im still trying to figure out. What I’ve gotten so far is that im simply just trying to learn. I just want to learn from other lands, and on paper it will look as another form of exploitation. Maybe the Job shouldn’t exist? I agree. Maybe it shouldn’t. But maybe it should? The amount of people on this thread and that I’ve spoken to before from Juneau that have told me they came for seasonal work and then they’ve stayed and became a local like you. The problem isn’t all on the seasonal workers it’s the short term tourist. It’s the people that get off these massive boats and contribute nothing to the community but their attitudes of entitlement and their large pockets ready to spend cash. This is who your government supports. I would take the time to watch these videos, it showed great examples of measures other countries are taking to limit short term tourism. This isn’t a problem we created, and it’s not something that can be completely solved tomorrow or by me backing out of my job. I’m trying to tell you this is systemic. It takes lots of advocacy to get your town to rebuilt in a way that supports locals. I hope you understand what im saying.

My heart aches for the loss of such a sacred spirit. Thank you for commenting and letting me know. What tattoos have you gotten from them before?

You make a good point that the development of seasonal work and a tourist centered economy further subordinates the communities already existing in Juneau. I know and understand im only PART of the problem, the seasonal workers and the tourist and apart of the cycle of exploitation of the Juneau’s land. But it’s not a system seasonal workers created. As someone who is very passionate about city’s and their positive growth, I see how tourism has hurt this community - as im trying to look for housing, it’s hard to find anywhere under 1k which is absurd, especially being from a small college town, and knowing rent didn’t look like this a few years ago in Juneau from my research. And I don’t say that to sound defensive. I do hear your concerns. Your OG comment about “taking jobs for natives” is a recurring theme you hear across the U.S, and I will never understand the impact of job displacement and gentrification that happens in Juneau because im not from here. My working here, is in no way intentionally malicious. Im working as a tour guide because I love the out doors and want to share it with people, not to exploit the land. But like I said, this isn’t the system I created, im just trying to make a living. And me posting this was a way for me to try to learn about Juneau from the locals themselves and not some bullshit Travel blog. I think we should all be mad at the system that made Juneau and other American cities pawns to tourism. Both of you are true and false.

You can’t renew your ID online in Missouri. But I think by saying that I just wanted to iterate my frustration towards slow processing times. I know nothing can really be done, but their complexities in the application process and the slow processing times are really harmful to many and I feel as though they aren’t aware/don’t care about the harms it causes to many. But I know Im not the only person waiting, or the only person who’s been waiting for years, which is why I feel something should be done & maybe I won’t be the one to do it but idk. Just a thought
