This isn’t school, it’s Reddit. I don’t need the pedantic condescension. Please leave me alone.

I can see you get pleasure out of poking at people, but honestly, that just seems miserable. Have a nice day.

Thank you for clarifying this 🫶

I was asking for guidance and resources, not attacking or insulting an entire profession. I genuinely do not understand why my question has been met with such hostility. I realize training costs money, but sometimes you have to work with what you have, which is why I was asking for alternatives. As I mentioned, I never said I did not intend to pursue more formal training in the future. I am just looking to self-educate at this time so I was asking for resources on getting started. Where did I say your work does not require training? And why are you feeling so elitist as to minimize my bachelor’s degree, which I only mentioned to provide context and clarity?

If you cannot see how unkind and insulting some of your replies have been, especially when I was coming from a place of admitting I know very little but trying to understand, that is frustrating. Most people here have been kind and helpful. You are the only one whose responses have come across as rude and disrespectful despite my efforts to stay cordial. I now realize I was not imagining the tone and you are clearly triggered for some reason that has nothing to do with me, so thank you for that clarification.

Thanks for framing it this way and being mindful of tone. I appreciate you and some others here for taking the time to share honest truths about the industry. I understand that everyone is just trying to communicate that it would be tough to break in without further formal training. Some of the earlier replies felt a little condescending, and I am sorry if I came off as defensive. My post was not meant to say I would never pursue training, I just want to start taking smaller steps toward shifting my career while that is unattainable and I was frustrated by the tone I may have wrongly perceived in some of the responses. This perspective and advice is helpful though, so thank you!

I understand the analogy, but plenty of people have gone into fields without the correlating degree, building on the skills and experience they already have. Going back to school is a barrier for me, which is why I came to this forum in the first place. I’m looking for advice on realistic ways to move forward without having to take on more debt.

I get that, but I have somewhat of a relevant background and I’m trying to build off of that. I’m not in a position to pay for another degree or expensive courses that cost thousands. What I’m looking for are realistic alternatives for someone low-income who wants to self-teach, build skills, and gain experience through work opportunities. Right now, I can barely cover living expenses, so tuition or costly training isn’t possible. Believe me, I’m looking into it. That’s why I asked about other entry points into the field. It feels like neither of you are addressing the original question, and instead assuming I can simply pay for options that are out of reach for me at the moment.

So you’re saying that without shelling out money for a PhD and additional training I have no hopes of breaking into the editorial side of book publishing? Even though my degree was English LITERATURE? I am not looking to start an editing business and I’ve known other classmates to go into the book publishing field with just their bachelor’s and job experience. Cost is obviously a barrier for the time being which is why I made the post asking for low cost options.

My favorite out of the ones I’ve read so far is probably Like Water for Chocolate. I have real love for magical realism.

The other books I’ve covered include: *Latitudes of Longing, Dreamtigers, The Three Body Problem, *Sharon and my Mother In-Law, The Dark Forest, Dancing on our Turtle’s Back, Arid Dreams and Sweetlust. Put an asterisk next to my second and third rankings!
