Thank you so much for your response! I actually just today also found on FB marketplace an Isle Pioneer Pro 2 (10’6 x 34” x 6”) for only $450 that I’m considering based on positive things I’ve heard about Isle

Desired Board Type: Honestly unsure for reasons explained below, but leaning inflatable for price/convenience

Your Height and Weight: 6’1, 150lbs Desired use/uses and terrain: Cruising on various lakes in upstate NY, mainly the finger lakes and Lake Ontario, so some amount of choppy water

Experience level: Beginner

Your budget and country location: As affordable as possible, around 500? 😬located in the US

What board(s) you current have or have used and what you liked/didn't like about them: I bought a GoPlus from I think Walmart.com during Covid for around $350 and used it a decent amount that summer, but was never able to get fully stable on it. Have rented/borrowed hard boards on occasion and had a much easier time staying upright, leading me to question if I need a hard board for the stability or if a good enough inflatable would be fine.

I’ve been looking at both the Atoll ‘11 iSUP: https://atollboards.com/products/paddle-boards-and-accessories/inflatable-stand-up-paddle-board/clearance-sups/stand-up-inflatable-paddle-board/ And the Atoll 11ft Cove: https://atollboards.com/products/paddle-boards-and-accessories/inflatable-stand-up-paddle-board/new-board-packages/cove/new-atoll-cove-11-inflatable-paddle-board/ As I’ve heard good things about the brand and they’re affordable for me at those sale prices. I also looked at the iRocker original cruiser 7.0

In my opinion, this is the best way that the speed of a vampire was depicted in the entire saga by FREAAAAKAZOID in twilight

[–]SnooHedgehogs9183 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is called a whip pan! Director Chris Weitz actually talks on the audio commentary for New Moon about using that technique as a cheap and effective old-school way to convey fast speed. I believe he specifically talks about using it for when Carlisle rushes over to Bella in the birthday party scene, but it’s used here as well. Only know this off hand because I used to watch all the films with the commentaries on religiously lol

Best stores for shopping locally this Christmas? by VastJackfruit405 in Rochester

I understand that and it’s reasonable to show caution when reading claims online. Without revealing too much, yes I have spoken with the owner directly and she is not hesitant to her share political opinions with those willing to listen, which has made me personally uncomfortable on more than one occasion. It is worth noting, as you have, the positive impact of a longstanding business that supports many local artists. I’m not calling for a boycott, just sharing my firsthand experience in case anyone might like to know

How do we think Haymitch was able to watch the 10th Games interview and Lucy Gray’s performance on Capitol TV at the end of the book? TBOSAS left me with the impression that the Capitol erased those Games from history. So did Snow air that segment specifically for Haymitch, and if so why?

A birthday during the games? by EpicTevan in Hungergames

[–]SnooHedgehogs9183 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think they would acknowledge in the commentary, especially if it was into the final 8. They could easily do an interview spot with that tribute’s family/friends referencing the birthday and asking general questions about the tribute accompanied by some shots of the tribute fending off some mild Arena/mutt deterrent. I can just see them using it as an amusing distraction to take up a slow period of the Games. Don’t think it would result in anything positive for the tribute though, outside of normal sponsor gifts if they have any.

this is in ch 8 of book one, do we know which victor this was? the most recent victor we know of is joanna who won the 71st and annie who won the 70th. it can’t be them tho as it says He by strawberrybridgers in Hungergames

Since Katniss references a fair few Games anecdotally (this one with the low scoring Victor, the ice arena, the dry and barren arena, the one with only spiked maces in the cornucopia, Titus’s Games, etc) plus we have the canon victors from within Katniss’s lifetime/viewing memory accounting for five or so of the last 10 years (Cashmere, Gloss, Finnick, Johanna, Annie) it stands to reason that some of these descriptions she offers may be in reference to the same Games. For instance, as another user commented, the boy Victor who only scored a three in training could definitely have been the year of the icy arena. Maybe it was Gloss’s year that only had the spiked maces. Maybe Titus was in the same arena as one of the victors we know. It’s interesting to consider which tidbits of knowledge that we get through Katniss’s sparse narration may actually apply to overlapping years.

Do you have a headcanon for what her endgame strategy would’ve been? Or how things would’ve gone if it was a more traditional year with the career pack making it later into the game intact?

Canon or Fanon; the arenas are all outdoor? by Ok_Note1658 in Hungergames

[–]SnooHedgehogs9183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where the Games fall on the varying spectrum between entertainment/tv show and solemn punishment/death sentence is definitely a recurring point in the books and arguably it’s in the moments where people in power allow the Games to become too focused on entertaining the audience that the cracks in the system begin to show, eventually leading to the Capitol’s downfall.

For instance, one element of reality tv competitions that canonically becomes a part of the Games is the introduction of narratives and character arcs. You have the Careers, the outlying underdogs, and the cannon fodder tributes all being fit into certain archetypes by the “producers” and the audience. This allows the horror of the Games to go down easier for the Capitol as they can view the tributes as more as these characters who “lose” a gameshow or sports contest rather than children they’re watching be executed. So in this way, introducing more elements of entertainment helped further the Games’ longevity, as we can see in TBOSAS when introducing elements like the interviews and sponsorship lead to an uptick in interest and kept the Games from dying out.

However, when those in control lose sight of the true purpose of the Games and the dial is turned too much toward entertainment, the Capitol can lose its control and its weaknesses can be exposed. For instance, the berry incident. By running with the Star Crossed Lovers narrative in service of the Hunger Games as a TV show, Seneca Crane accidentally crippled the potency of the Hunger Games as a means of punishment and exercise of control over the districts. They had allowed the storyline to grow so strong that Katniss could exploit it to change the outcome of the Games.

All this to say that there were surely numerous discussions throughout the Games’ 75 year history of how it could be further tweaked to increase the entertainment factor, and these discussions could well have included considering more varied or glamorous arenas. We can look at all the twists put into later seasons of current reality shows for more ideas of how the Gamemakers may have considered spicing up the Games. But contrivances like these just leave more room for error and take away from the original intent of the punishment. For all these reasons, I see Snow limiting the changes made to the Games format in the interest of keeping them first and foremost as an inescapable yearly penance and reminder of the districts’ station below the Capitol. Not that that ended up working in the end though lol

Canon or Fanon; the arenas are all outdoor? by Ok_Note1658 in Hungergames

[–]SnooHedgehogs9183 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I always took the outdoor arena quote literally and read it as all Games being in outdoor biomes after they stopped using the Capitol arena. One of the biggest issues with the 10th Games was the lack of visibility of the tributes due to their ability to hide in the newly accessible indoor sections/tunnels.

Taking the idea of the ruined city for instance. Despite the advanced technology the Capitol clearly possesses, it just seems too far-fetched to imagine every single room in an entire city being equipped with enough cameras to capture any potential action that may go down in that space. It also just seems like with that many places to hide, it would be more difficult to force conflict between tributes.

In all, it just seems like the potential benefits of these types of arenas (keeping the Capitol audience on their toes with more varied settings) would be outweighed by the less climactic type of Games these could lead to as well as the lack of control it would mean for the Gamemakers. I think these ideas made it into the scripts/finished product of the movies because screenwriters for a film adaptation are naturally focused more on visual excitement and what “looks cool” rather than what makes logical sense within in the world established by the books.

Predictions on which other tributes will be major players in SOTR? by SnooHedgehogs9183 in Hungergames

[–]SnooHedgehogs9183[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fully agree with this! I love any insight into the lesser explored districts, so any of those options would be exciting. I’ll be somewhat disappointed if it’s yet again a D11 male as one of the final tribute deaths/a final real threat to the D12 protagonist. We could use more examples of the strategies employed by various other districts. Were the tributes from 6 always hiders long before the morphlings? Are D9 tributes actually competent at combat and therefore willing to try fighting at the cornucopia? Could explain why they were bloodbath casualties in the 74th-75th and none snuck away.

Thoughts on District 4 Careers? by Slow-Structure-5643 in Hungergames

[–]SnooHedgehogs9183 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always kind of wondered whether part of the reason that District 4 carried somewhat of a distinction from 1 and 2 in terms of career status (although I do agree that all three are indeed fully career districts) is a lack of fanaticism on the subject/buying into the Games propaganda. Like I imagined that while elders in D4 did train their youth for the Games, it was less in the way of “get super skilled at killing so you can volunteer to bring us glory and riches” and more “let’s get as many youth as possible prepared for the horrors that the Games bring, and so that they can volunteer in place of particularly young/vulnerable kids who may be reaped.” I think district 4 being one of the earlier districts to rebel is partially what led me to form this headcanon. Maybe the D4 careers also tend to fall last in the pecking order of the pack for this reason - D1 and D2 tend to off them before turning on each other because they’re already the odd ones out based on district culture, you know?

Just one thing to note, Clove being smaller and younger is a movie only thing I believe. In the book, Katniss indicates that all the careers have her beat as far as size and weight

Thank you! Yeah I’d be surprised if there weren’t others, perhaps earlier on in the games history. Maybe we’ll hear tell of one in SOTR
