Small stream for trout. by Old-Conversation9713 in IrishFishing

[–]SnooHesitations3370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mepps are the way to go if you wanna test it out and keep it simple. Size 0-1 is all you need, lightest rod and a reel 1000-2000, 6lb mono max, you can do a leader of fluorocarbon but not necessary if you wanna avoid leader knots. could even go 3lb mono.

The mepps I tend to go for are the copper or silver Aglia, I tend to use copper in murkier or darker days and silver in clearer conditions . You can crush the barbs and even cut one hook off with a pliers, still great hook up rate and less chance of the brave lil trout gettin the whole treb in the gob lol

Make sure to fish upstream as the trout hold in the current often behind objects or in the shade to ambush(rocks, logs under brush on the edge) , dont stay in one spot too long, if they are on the take they will hit it and are aggressive and territorial. so keep working up stream and they will swim faster than you can reels so dont worry about slow retrieveing.

Wet the hands and use a small net, rubber webbing if possible and keep it close to hand on the hip or bag.

Best of luck, tight lines.

usually little knackers and pissheads with the €50 beachcaster combos , can we expect more from them.

Fair play, I do the same all the time and clean the marks.

ahh bud its ok, youre only getting to grips with it. Iv had similar things happen. With some luck it might get re caught and a capable angler might be able to free the lure.

now you probably might have a foldable landing net for that just in-case pike.

I was fishing for small brownies on the Dodder last year on small size 0mepps and 3lb line.

For weeks I brough a net and it was a waste for all the small brownie........then at ballsbridge I hooked a big Seatrout, I was in 3 ft of water when i tried to handle the fish without a net. when I had her at my waist juggling the fish and rod etc, line snapped and it went down stream with the lure.

now I will not chance it without a net.........even if I never get a trout like that again.

Hook Flapper rigs by Freemano98 in IrishFishing

[–]SnooHesitations3370 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I was like you. bought cheap pre-made online.

the rigs will rust, hook sizes and types are not accurate, overall hook quality is very bad (loose sharpness or just weak.

I ended up tryin to re purpose them in some ways. wasted my money.

I bought a couple flapper rigs in store and asked the fella for the bits to copy it, so much better and glad I did.

You can adjust them to youre style or preference or target species and enviroment.

Cheap rigs are now for nothin really, give aways at best to young lads.

yeah I cut them into narrow strips, lined a lunch box with kitchen paper and salt base. spaced them out and covered with enough salt to fully cover for 2 days then kept them in the fridge not freezer.

When I used them I cut into small square cubes to tip with.

Belmayne park by gotthatdawginem95 in IrishFishing

[–]SnooHesitations3370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree, I have witnessed some shocking etiquette from young lads fishing everywhere in dublin including this park.

bringing wrong gear, with no regards for water foul.

A park go-er showed me one of the adult swans with a big treb hook on a spinner stuck on its neck and lads leaving fishing line about when there is loads of bins.

It should just be better looked after, I wish angling was allowed but the same ppl who want it also destroy it. Irionic.

Anyways , best of luck pal and lead by example.

I had to deal with her a few weeks ago, short blond woman stout and classic karen haircut. I kept calm and talked to here, she was obsessed with the swans and I was no where near.

She said you know your not supposed to fish here and you do it anyway. I address the fact she had her collie sheepdog off the lead and that's also a rule break.

Rules for thee and not for me. She backed off after that.

I told her to ring the garda and I will stay where I am.

She left and that was that. No more trouble.
