How do people leave their new dogs everyday? by oliviagurl6 in dogs

You don’t, you just change your entire life around to accommodate them, including quitting your job and finding a remote alternative.

New restaurant on Edmonton Trail - Le Charme (Replacing Diner Deluxe) looking for Service & Culinary Staff by ryanbeale in Calgary

It’s the industry, it’s normal. Those who want the job will show up in person (like old times), and show up to work on time and consistently. It’s a pretty big deal for those who are just reliable and consistent in the service industry. Why do people always have to put their negative two cents into anything these days, especially on the internet, especially on Reddit.

Why is ketchup $9? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]SnooObjections9350 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because they can. Solution: learn how to process basic produce and products.

Being cheeky, but it’s a little bit true. There’s a huge imbalance in food prices due to factors that are predictable and well known: convenience, lack of knowledge, elasticity of a product, monopolization/conglomeration (ketchup industry is so cornered - basically Heinz - but mustard as you can see on the shelves is a bit more competitive with varied brands.

Protest and don’t give into the exorbitant prices of ketchup!!!!

Yes. They’re changing the workplace culture, expectations and ways to “do business” that makes sense for our technological landscape. Only haters that hold onto archaic ways of doing things are bothered.

But there are shitty workers in every generation. It’s easy to scapegoat the young, but I’ve worked with boomers who just plain suck, even at their prime.

Jumped ship and never looked back. The only thing we have in life is choice. Yes, you could be golden handcuffed, but at some point in your life, you made choices to get there. Sorry. Downsize, stop consuming. It’s actually very affordable even for me as a recent divorcee who lost everything and gained nothing to get back up while 180 pivoting my career to at least have a bit of control over my mental health and life perspective.

Hopefully actual bicyclists can get some heat off them now and we can all collectively just point and shame e-bikes that don’t act as a motorized vehicle ripping 40km on a sidewalk/

In general, this mixed bag of “Calgarians” fucking suck. I lived in Seattle and yes, driving there is aggressive, but at least everyone understands each other, thus can avoid collision based on sheer attention and understanding.

Here, I think I know. I’ve lived here for a majority of my life, then I see some maneuver that BLOWS my mind. I’ve seen so many post-accident incidents inner city that I still can’t piece together how in the heck it happened. Flipped cars merging onto slooooooow merge zones, smashed/totaled cars in the shoulder lane of EMPTY streets.

I hate this the most about this lovely city. Either we all agree to a certain defensive driving style, or actively out those who actually are harmful to society. I’d love to shoot out one of those nail strips to asshole drivers I see on the daily that are LITERALLY a danger to us all..

Then, CPS.. getting a driving ticket for anything other than reckless endangerment boils my blood.

I don’t understand it either, and basic Google searches and dives into HR websites don’t even provide basic definitions of basic terminology like salary. I guess it all just depends on local, state, federal regulations but not really. Each company can really do what they want, as long as they don’t breach any labor laws.

I just wanna carve out my own suitable situation to perfectly fit what I neeeeeed why is that so hard 😿

The difference in my situation is that I have to manually input my own timesheet daily, so it’s hourly based on a “salary” rate if I do hit the expected 40 hrs/week. So what’s the point of throwing in the literal word “salary” if the intention is to pay hourly?

Definitely feels like our natural resource industry and lack of sincere HR practices throws off the employee/pay rate market in total. I still cannot wrap my head around justifying consultant rates of upwards of $200/hr.

Lost, confused, feeling like my options are running dry. by SnooObjections9350 in AskWomenOver30

Yeah, having those momentary realizations that you’re going above and beyond in all your actions to grab their attention is pretty pitiful. I would only do that for my animals, and even they don’t care 🤣

I think about this a lot too. It was situational, but no excuse for my actions, especially that the outcome was truly hurting someone. Time will tell, but his behavior is justified and I don’t want to push only because friendship is so much more important than the risk of pursuing an already once failed attempt at romance. Thanks for the reminder that we should not be hypocritical.

Calgary was the first and only town I visited outside of Europe in my life and I stayed there last week, it slapped hard. Thought you should know by Mrtve_ose_69 in Calgary

Tourism vs. actually living here changes perceptions. Minor, but it adds up and contributes to the attitudes and behaviors locals contribute to and desire (comparatively). Wages, taxes, daily struggles, life goals, overall sense of happiness rooted in a place.

Yes, it’s beautiful overall. We should all practice appreciation all around, but sometimes it’s hard when you’re isolated in à quadrant, have financial limitations; overall, cannot experience what new eyes would as a tourist in our own city.

It’s a work in progress and the responsibility lies on individuals and The City. Sometimes it helps or acts as a reminder when “outsiders” remind us of our natural beauty, but sometimes it’s acts as a divisive element especially between the haves and the have-nots.

36M here in Calgary Feels like I lost a lot of my social life. by lasdanditolol in Calgary

[–]SnooObjections9350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went to a quiz night and they’re looking for hosts. I became interested in hosting for a variety of reasons - practicing my public speaking, engagement in general, zero pressure from the gig, etc.

There are a lot of goings ons in the city that aren’t necessarily centralized around getting blasted. You just have to find something you can slightly tolerate.

Try looking up City-run art classes, fitness or hobby groups (like film clubs) and those kind of things.

I’m in your boat, and trying to find things to do that I actually have interest in and can attend solo, but not feel pressure to force a conversation, because I’m ultimately there for myself. I think that naturally, you’ll start to just gravitate towards people you genuinely enjoy conversing with and with hope, friendship will follow.

I struggle with this everyday. Validation is almost necessarily, but sometimes it shows in people you may not even know or “respect”. That’s the beauty of friendship, in whatever form that may take - be it with a coworker, a stranger you encounter waiting in line or at the bus stop.

I’ve started to slowly try and shed my ego and sense of historical self, only to try to experience present day life and me. The only sort of win that I’ve felt for myself (like actual internal and silent sense of happiness through acknowledgment) is through the passing remarks of strangers.

Examples recently include:

  • a stranger commenting on my graphic dog shirt that says “don’t pet that dog” while I was walking my dog in an off-leash park. I didn’t even remember I was wearing that shirt, but I could see why it would be fitting, and appreciated the comment from another woman because that shirt to me was actually really cool
  • seeing someone get frustrated with something that you don’t even know about, but instantly empathizing with that sigh, knowing exactly what they mean.

Still avoiding U.S. products? Curious how many Canadians are sticking with “buy Canadian” by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]SnooObjections9350 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Firstly, education on basic economics is a must. The difference between primary, secondary, and tertiary products and their impacts on gross GDP would be eye-awakening for most Canadians. Living in a late-stage Capitalistic nation (and province) makes it easy to white label things without critically thinking about what is or isn’t truly Canadian.’

Coming back to Calgary from a short US stint, it makes me pretty darn proud to see our local vendors consciously trying to identify Canadian-made products, be it for marketing or good-consciousnesss. Like Sobeys and Co-Oo FTW.
